  1. Yeah! Overdrive appears to have Shifting Shadows and some of the books are on audio. They also have at least one graphic novel. Anyone use Overdrive for Graphic Novels. I have both kindle Fires and an ipad. Will they work? I need the Bingo square! You aren't the last.........
  2. We didn’t know what we were having so we picked both a girl and a boy name the same evening and used them both. Dh had gone through a huge popular baby name book and circled a dozen names he liked for each and I picked. They do sound rather alike. Same first and last letter but I really really like them still and would not change. Occasionally they cause confusion especially since in the US the boy name became popular for girls. Dd wishes her name didn’t have so many spelling variations ...... she has the traditional Scottish spelling and at the time I named her I didn’t know that it had spelling variations. But they even like their names...... As a side note I don’t think it is possible to not have confusion because the grandparents always confused my kids names with the cousins. The names are so not the same.
  3. The Secret History sits with my abandoned books except it is one I was too embarrassed to put on the Goodreads shelf because it seemed like everyone else loved it. I have to say that many of the eight books on the list look intriguing. A few work for Brit Tripping so I will update when I get a chance. Have not seen the Quiet Place.......it may be too horror visually for me. I am watching The Tunnel on Prime currently and after the first episode of the second season am not sure about going on the Chunnel Train anymore. Dh is going to love the fact that I only want to go at really busy times now! Visuals freak me out far more than works on a page. That timeline is wonderful! I am going to have to do the reread now with as many shorts as possible worked in. Robin, the short Kareni linked is totally worthwhile. I remember having problems locating it several years ago but when I did ..........
  4. Thank you! I have not read this particular series but BF recently read and loved the series. This is a great one to have on the Kindlefor emergencies, Considering my emoticons haven’t worked easily on WTM in years this is great!
  5. My DS needs to have the options pointed out to him VERY clearly. He forgets the details and doesn’t quite get the bigger picture always. I would be so very tempted to have a time management discussion about now. My DC’s are living at home and I tend to look at this time as transition. ;)
  6. I would just do it now. Daffodils are really hardy and should be fine. Last spring Dh found a bag of bulbs in the garage that didn’t make it in the ground in the fall. They were far from perfect when I put them in the ground and some actually bloomed in June. This year they are just fine.
  7. Pretty common to leave quickly. Especially when it isn’t your first. Btw, it is the mum’s choice to leave. You have home visits after so quite a bit of support.
  8. It took me awhile but I found that one of our libraries has a great collection of Wyndham. I will work on getting those for her. Is there a preferred order or just start start with The Chrysalids? From Goodreads I see someone wrote a continuation called Night of the Triffids.
  9. FYI,. The series starts with The Anatomist’s Wife and it is important to start there. I don’t think I have any other series that I enjoy and you have not tried because many of my favorites have came from you. I am glad you liked Lake Silence. For some reason I had my doubts about it and ended up loving it. I can’t wait for the St. Cyr. I am glad I have two readers because Dd can’t wait too! Lol Thanks for the new author idea, I can’t find Dara Horn’s Eternal Life but found another book by her that looks interesting. The World to Come is apparently about a real life art theft and Chagall. I think there is an Art Bingo square so I marked it. I have never read Mrs, Pollifax. I probably need to remedy that! :) I have to admit to wondering what will slow you down! A funny note, Dd was very excited to discover The Day of the Triffids on my kindle. I have to admit she was shocked to learn it was for me and Brit Tripping NOT just for her enjoyment! Now for my Northumbria update.......I guess I missed the bus because I appear to be rather unexpectedly in DURHAM! At this point my Vera mystery, Telling Tales is in a small village in Durham and keeps talking about shipping in the Hull Estuary which is East Yorkshire.
  10. You might want to try The Custard Protocol series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12799420-prudence . I won't say it is as fun as the original Parasol Protectorate but the story does continue. She also has a YA called The Finishing School series which I enjoyed and Dd loved this one of a prequel. I am feeling too lazy to edit but I am curious about Miss Silver out of order......I read the first three recently and there was a bit of a continuing storyline going on. The main couple from one book carried on in terms of her knitting in the next, which I liked the awww factor of knowing they were happy together. I think it could be ignored but I sometimes have problems with out of order. Were there any major holes or so minor they just didn't matter. If I hadn't read close to back to back I probably would not have noticed that they were the same characters. Btw, I totally agree with you on Ian Rutledge being better when just reading an occasional title out of order which is such an unbelievable thing for me to say. ;).
  11. Brit Tripping.......I seem to have fallen off the bus a bit also but plan to hop back on this week in Northumbria and read a book from the Anne Cleeves Vera series. I am on the second book, Telling Tales having read The Crow Trap earlier this year and am looking forward to it. I am not a fan of the television show for some reason but found the first book to be very appealing. I did read Aunt Dimity meets the Devil for Northumbria recently if anyone is looking for something lighter. My recent finishes are my Iceland book which was Silence of the Gravehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20326795-silence-of-the-grave. I complained about being rather confused in my reading of the Erlunder series because several books are not translated into English and want to say eventually the huge knowledge gaps I was experiencing in this book were somewhat explained. I would still love to be able to read the missing books but feel a bit less frustrated with the series. I just need to pick up the next one soon before I forget what I have managed to figure out! Lol I also had read the sixth Lady Darby book before overdrive snatched it away. Lady Darby by Anna Lee Huber is another favorite series of mine. A Brush with Shadows was set on Dartmoor (Devon) and was very good. I hate to say more because a couple of others here also read this series. Which leads me to ask if Kareni has tried any books in this series? My re-read of the Sebastian St. Cyr series continues.......I am next in line for the new release!!!!
  12. In general I think there is no need but my brother normally introduces me as his little sister. He also lives in a small town and almost always knows the waitstaff.
  13. We still call it confirmation. :)
  14. I am currently reading the third Erlendur in terms of what’s available in English and wish I had the ability to read the ones that have not been translated. It is a good story but I know I am missing a great deal which just plain bugs me. I also really want to read the Bob books. I need to put a purchase request in for those!
  15. Amy, I didn’t know the confirmation was LAST weekend! I hope she is feeling better. I hope James starts feeling better soon also. So many bugs that seem to be hard to shake this year. Robin, Yeah! I suspect you are one trip to the mall from being done. That skirt is super versatile. I own two that are similar, black and navy. They have seriously changed my life even if dd thinks I need dresses. We end up traveling in what I would class as dressy casual for about 4 hours round trip twice a month. Those skirts have improved my comfort levels hugely because no more pantyhose needed. They look nice with many styles of tops like the draped ones mentioned above. Btw, I have learned that many of the lacy looking ones actually have a ton of stretch in them and look far better on then expected on. So if you like it on the hanger try it!
  16. I haven’t been looking for wedding attire but my daughter has had me out shopping for new dresses lately. She seems to think my wearing the same two dresses for pretty much her entire life is wrong and wishes to remedy that situation. Dressing rooms are painful especially because she grabs a few things to try also. I feel your pain! My (DD) conclusions are longer sleeves and dress length. Fitted top with a looser bottom. I think Tuesday’s link is probably what would work for me too.....after I tried on 20 or so. ;) Another style to try is a fitted top with a lacy over jacket. I actually bought a couple of tops like that because DD said they looked great and were on sale. My friend (our age) who is a professional musician buys this style to preform in. Something like this https://www.dillards.com/p/le-bos-plus-textured-3-piece-pant-set/505696423. She has many of these tops with the flowing jackets and wears them over trousers and skirts. All are black and some of the lacy jackets are beautiful. She always looks incredible and is comfortable also.
  17. Love it! It’s hard not to at least try a book when the first line is good. I consider myself to be a fan of Steampunk but I haven’t found any other series that I enjoyed as much as Parasol Protectorate. How fun!
  18. I still remember that quote and it has been a few years.........Since many of us are hiding in that underground bunker let's play " best first line" in a recent or not so recent book. Here is mine from my current Iceland challenge read...... warning this one has a yuck factor. First line of Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indridason "He knew at once it was a human bone, when he took it from the baby who was sitting on the floor chewing it.". Monuments, especially war monuments are so fascinating especially when they are done in a private non military setting. I love looking at monuments. I know I am jumping to different wars but suspect the US civil war must be even more convoluted. In our village, at least, the memorial contains the names of anyone who died during either of the great wars or of injuries received during. Should be an easy definition. ;) Well, Dh did some research regarding our local one because a local group wanted to add several names, mainly people who died years later of war injuries. We (quietly a home, not in public) had to chuckle about a gent who died at a distant racetrack and had fathered at least 2_children after the war. Seemed to give a new meaning to the guidelines. Btw, he isn't included. There are also people appearing on multiple memorials including ours, some with really tenuous connections to the village. Spent a couple of weeks with family there at age 10 etc.
  19. My favorite reading time slot seems to be the 3 To 5 am. It’s terrible that my going to bed routine includes making sure I have a device charged to handle significant reading in the dark. Hugs Btw, I enjoyed the quotes......
  20. We moved to the UK when my kids were 7 and 9. When are you moving? If they are in school the summer term is the sneaky popular way home ed people introduce their kids to formal or new schools because it is so laid back most places. We had English Heritage passes and made a huge effort to investigate the new country with the kids. Lots of fun field trips for all. We also took them to as many of the meetings involved with the move as possible, council tax to tv licenses so they could feel part of the process. Feel free to pm me.
  21. I think I have read (and loved) every single book on your list except for the Susannah Gregory. Those seem to be hard for me to find. I am looking forward to your opinion on the CS Harris. Also thanks for the county info. I will update in Goodreads soon. Btw, I LOVE Julia Quinn. I am probably rereading her book for Red Shoe also.
  22. I agree! I never managed to finish Neverwhere. I bought it at an airport because of Kindle failure and tried to read it but watched movies instead. Dd picked it up at some point and liked it but she is truly a Gaiman fangirl . I listened to The Graveyard Book recently and loved it. I plan to try another later this year. Tuesday.....thanks for listing all the counties for Three Men and a Boat again. Now that I have realised that Goodreads will let me put them all in I will. ;)
  23. I love seeing all the Eccleston adoration here. I really have never encountered so many irl! You all are my friends for a reason! :) I read or listened to an interview with him recently where he says he now wishes he had stayed in the role another year or two. :( For some reason I liked Rose with him the best. I also like Tennant and love his seasons. I cracked up at Kathy's you never forget your first Doctor because I certainly have. Suspect it must have been Tom Baker........hubby watched Doctor Who on PBS back when we first were married so 30 years ago and Baker was on forever. On my scale of favourite Doctors Baker really rates middle of the road! If anyone has a chance to watch the new Shada where animation has been used to fill in all the missing unfilmed parts of was great. I have watched it a more than once. Great Cambridge setting. I just finished listening to Christie's The Big Four with Hugh Frasier. It was wonderful. I did not like it when I read it years ago but found it a clever book when listening. Totally loving the Christie challenge! Thanks Robin!!!
  24. First, one book set in Wales is part of the Cadfael level on the Detective bus. Personally I am just making a note to put with my final count. Carola Dunn's Cornish series......I read the first when it first came out a thought it was OK. Since they aren't available in my overdrive I haven't read more. Maybe I will try to get the second for Cornwall. Regarding The Winter Garden, if it's any consultation I don't think much happens. All I remember is ice skating. Regarding the Madeleine L'Engle quote.....From how I read your quote I don't think she did believe in God she just wanted to join the community of those who attend a church, that chuch. I really hope I have said that in a way that doesn't upset anyone. I finished Hangman Blind https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4320305-hangman-blind and enjoyed it. I learned quite a bit about Yorkshire history that I don't remember encountering elsewhere thanks to all my googling of place names. On of my new bits of knowledge...... Villages were reclaimed by the sea in the 14th Century off the coast near Hull\Spurn Point. There actually have not been that many missing villages in the history of the UK beyond the ones in reservoirs so it seems significant to me. My needed CS Harris has appeared in Overdrive! I got a good start this morning and can hopefully finish before I lose the latest release.
  25. So cute! I would love more pictures.
