  1. I think I have to agree with those who say I wouldn't intervene unless there was some other kind of neglect or abuse going on. If the kid is in a happy, loving home I wouldn't want to mess with that. If I were in a position to share resources etc. I might try that.
  2. I ate beans a lot growing up, but just don't take the time to cook them much. I'm considering getting a pressure cooker--can anyone recommend a good and decent priced one? I have a huge pressure canner but that isn't what I want for cooking beans...
  3. Just wondering...I got their newest catalog and am facing temptation all over again...
  4. It does sound rather like bipolar. She should really be under a doctor's care. Lithium is often used to treat bipolar disorder, and there are over the counter lithium supplements that some people use to regulate moods. If she would be open to trying a supplement it might be worth considering, though I am cautious about suggesting anyone try to self medicate for such a condition.
  5. We have this one http://www.amazon.com/Maped-Technic-Compact-Compass-538717/dp/B0029FHW5U/ref=pd_sim_op_3
  6. For my perfectionist, it was a matter of waiting for her to mature emotionally. We didn't do formal math until she was eight, then she zipped through MM 2B-5A in less than 18 months.
  7. :cursing: auto correct... was supposed to say suicidality...I'll go back and fix that
  8. The type of validation LibertyH describes may help, it is giving verbal recognition to the reality of the person's experience without casting judgments on that experience. I doubt that trying to change these person's thought patterns while in the grasp of a depressive episode will do any good. Do be on the alert for any signs of suicidality. There is not much you can do when an adult refuses necessary mental health care. Edited to correct auto corrects incorrect correction...
  9. I don't remember anyone in my family complaining about beans and rice. We liked it. The homemade salsa made a big difference.
  10. TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/jack_horner_building_a_dinosaur_from_a_chicken.html ETA if you Google Jack Horner chicken dinosaur you'll find more links. Now I've got the nursery rhyme going through my head: little Jack Horner start in a corner...
  11. I read a book about that once, from the library...I'm trying to remember the title, it was in the dinosaur section. The documentary might be related...
  12. My family ate lots of rice and beans growing up. They certainly featured as our most common dinner. With salsa and cheese.
  13. No advice, but ((hugs)). I am so sorry.
  14. I'm with the credit card paid off every month crowd. We've had fraudulent charges on our cards several times, and the problem has always been cleared up promptly and easily. We get $ back as well.
  15. Yep, I'm scheduling. And trying to figure out how to fit more school around all our outside activities. We dropped one activity, added another, and are facing schedule changes on two. My head is spinning...
  16. Have you checked ked for YouTube videos? There are probably several different learn to play guitar series on there.
  17. Praying this baby hangs on! I remember spotting with one of mine and being so worried...
  18. The gardening topics on the board reminded me of my favorite gardening tip to extend the tomato season: when frost hits, pull up your tomato vines and bring them inside to let the tomatoes continue ripening. I've heard you can hang them upside down or wrap them in brown paper, but I just lay mine across some boxes in my garage. We had a salad on Christmas eve with delicious tomatos from the garage. My grandpa used to do this when he lived in Fairbanks Alaska, the growing season was short but he would get tomatoes through November by hanging the plants in the garage to ripen.
  19. I think no orgasms ever would make sex less than desirable to a lot of women. If I were in this situation I would be trying some new things, working together with dh to figure out what would make things work for me. I don't personally feel a need to O' every time, honestly it's not always worth the trouble to me--but I know we can get there when I am in the mood for it, and dh is always happy to oblige. I don't believe this is a status quo you just have to live with. I do think a decent sex life is important for a happy marriage in the vast majority of cases. I think it is worth putting an effort into finding a way for that to happen for you. You're asking questions and seeking answers, and that's a good place to start.
  20. Well, it sounds like my issues are more minor than yours but I can suggest two small things that have helped at times when my interest and my husband's were way off balance (basically, pregnancy and breast feeding hormones seem to wreak havoc with my libido...) It would get so his frequent advances were driving me crazy--I hated refusing, I hated his unhappiness when I refused, I hated the fact that any moment of emotional or physical closeness got turned into a "can we have sex now" moment. Two things helped: one, helping my husband understand that if he responded negatively when I refused an advance that felt to me like he was punishing me, which made me feel like my freedom over my own body was being encroached on. I needed to be able to say "no" without him going around moping for the next hour or even just making a sound or gesture of frustration. He tried to honor that wish. The other thing that helped was to agree that, at times when I was struggling with this issue, he would try to avoid initializing anything. That way I didn't have to keep saying no. The flip side was that I would keep his needs in mind and would myself look for opportunities when I felt up to being intimate and I would make the first move. Psychologically, it makes a huge difference to me if I don't feel I have to be "on guard" against unwanted advances. It is way easier for me to choose to make advances myself at times when I feel most up to it.
  21. Some kids are just born with weak enamel. I have had two who got awful cavities as babies and three who didn't, eating/nursing/hygiene habits were similar for all of them. Do go to the dentist as soon as you can.
  22. Sounds fine, the other things you are doing are also part of your children's education. We have multiple activities that limit our formal schooling time several days a week. I compensate by schooling six days a week year round and making sure some minimums (such as math) happen almost every day.
