  1. "Home School Day is Monday, November 11, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m." I didn't see a flyer for it though.
  2. Oh wait, that is for 2012. I hope they are still doing it this year. Better go look it up.....
  3. Here is the flyer: http://www.sixflags.com/discoveryKingdom/assets/pdf/2012SFDK%20Homeschool%20flyer.pdf They are offering some kind of picnic lunch and I wasn't sure if that was a good deal or not. Also I will probably only have my 15 yr old and 9yr old with me so probably can't do any of the super big roller coasters with the little one and no one to watch him. Favorite rides we shouldn't miss? I have only been there once ages ago so I am completely unfamiliar with the rides.
  4. Any tips? I see that they are only open for six hours and I am wondering if you really have a chance to do lots of things in that time. Also has anyone participated in the picnic lunch? Was it overly crowded? I am thinking of going but have never done a homeschool day before. I have only been once and they will not let you bring in snacks so I am concerned about eating since we have always brought food everywhere we go. Just looking for some general help and if it's worth it or should I save up for a regular day. TIA
  5. It looks like it's fixed on my computer. Since I put youtube in my always block list maybe it just needed time to take effect. I don't know but it's working correctly now, thank goodness! I like to block it cause it's so easy for me to bypass using my password. Just makes life a little easier. So for now K9 is working out.
  6. Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I was just surprised that even with a filter you can't block what you want to block. I have a love/hate relationship with the internet at this point in my life!
  7. We always read the plays together since there are so many different characters. It makes is more interesting. Haven't done a movie yet but this is my second son to do the play with and I am thinking I might. But simply reading the play together was enjoyable enough for us. Not too difficult.
  8. I've found a glitch with the K9 internet filter and wanted to pass it on. Apparently it can't filter traffic from secure https sites. My main example: I realized last night that while youtube is blocked in many ways in my settings it is bypassed if you are logged into your gmail and you click on the youtube link at the top of your gmail. That's even when I specified to block the youtube page no matter what.....it still came up fine. Any better filters? I have been so pleased with how this one works but this threw me and really bugs me.
  9. Too funny seeing this since we just turned it on. 18 and 15 ds are watching with me 9 ds I don't want to watch it. I'm a huge horror fan though so my olders have seen worse.
  10. I did too......I think I've read it before but I needed to read it again to see if it's the one I'm thinking of.
  11. We use HOAW and Omnibus as well. I used to have him summarize each chapter of HOAW but now he just reads and we discuss. Sorry I can't help with planning, but I'm not much of a planner and we have always done lots of history so my high schooler didn't need too much more in depth stuff. I have and use all the Omnibuses though cause I just love them. But we pick and choose a good assortment of books to read from each, not all of them. I would read them all if we had more time. We only do a handful of the extra writing assignments.
  12. So sorry Halcyon.....I've been following this whole saga. I have never seen so many spammers at one time on this board! What's going on?
  13. I make our big meal for lunch and we had fresh caught salmon (thanking my generous neighbor who gave it to us) and spanish rice with gandules.
  14. Thanks! I have been wanting to get one for my son.
  15. You know what's even weirder is I often get things addressed to my junky email but with a period in the name. And that's not how it is for my actual email address.....how come the spammers can get through with a change like that? Like if my address was beckysmith they will us becky.smith it's one way I always know it's spam
  16. Oh yeah that's what I was going to do and I would never respond to an unknown email like this but I have never received anything like it. I knew it was a scam though cause it was sent to an email I only use for things like facebook and it gets tons of spam. I just pray my own family is smart enough to not respond to stuff like this.
  17. Email I just received from a total stranger: Shannon- Hope your summer is going well. Can't believe it is already August. Can I get your mom's home address from you? Thanks- Lisa What is the goal of an email like this? Makes me nervous to think other people I know might actually give out my address to some random emailer.
  18. I wish I knew why it wasn't enough with the epi pen. It can be so hard to tell what to do. The last reaction my son had he ended up with at least 5tsp of Benadryl. My pediatrician once told us that you can give quite a bit of Benadryl, not just the listed amount on the bottle. I wanted to use the pen but he was resistant so I just waited to see if his throat tightened up and luckily the reaction did subside. Scares me now though because I think he should have had the epi pen without any question. I hope the next time after reading this article he will just let me give it to him. I don't know about other kids but with my son I can always tell exactly what is happening because his lips swell a bit but they turn a deep purple. His ears get purple as well. Because sometimes when it comes on it can seem like an allergy or asthma attack, but that is always a dead give away for him, even before he gets hives. **TMI, but when my son had his anaphylactic reaction so soy, he literally threw up what looked like a dough ball. Just a clump that his body was rejecting. That time I sped him to the Dr and didn't even get to the epi pen, but his Dr told me from now on just give him the shot.
  19. http://www.modbee.com/2013/07/30/2834384/years-of-caution-about-peanut.html This makes me so sad! I mean 3 epi pens and a 13 is still dead. My oldest has a severe peanut allergy and now that he is an adult I'm even more scared for him because he gets too comfortable I think. He just had some weird reaction the other day out of the blue and we never did figure out if peanuts were the cause.
  20. It isn't ......soybean oil is involved but that's in everything these days.
  21. Ok I would love some practical advice from all of you singles who have managed to school. I intend to work nights and weekends and hope that I am not too exhausted to school during the day. We school year round and usually take most Fridays off so it's a four day a week schedule. I think I can do it and I really can't handle putting the younger in school but I feel like I am starting down an unknown path. I have no family here to help and not too many friends left. It's amazing how my husband left me but he gets all the friends and support. I feel like a freak sometimes.
  22. That's great Tracey! PM me and we can chat. Thank goodness it's summer so I am doing my externship during day time hours but I intend to look for a job that is only nights and weekends so I can keep schooling. I've homeschooled for 12 years now and for all of us it would be too much to just stop. I've been a stay at home mom for 18 years now so I am so lost trying to be a working and schooling mom. On the bright side I have noticed I am much less overwhelmed now that I don't have to take care of the ex.
  23. Separated in November and I just finished up a Pharmacy tech program. I intend to work and homeschool but have no clue how I will actually do it all. I'd love a group to chat with though cause it's definitely overwhelming but has to be doable. I refuse to believe we can't do it :)
