  1. :grouphug: Please, please know that I am speaking very gently here. Did you allow here to quit these activities mid-season/semester? If so, then you may be subconciously feeding her thoughts that she is not "good enough". We went through several periods of this type of thougth with my now nearly 16DD. One of our family rules is that you aren't allowed to quit during the season or semester (however the activity is usually scheduled). Our reasons that we have always given are: "you've made a committment to your team" and "your instructor has already committed to teaching you for the semester/year and her income is based on her students". One thing that we had to contend with in addition to the constant comparisons was the belief that she should be able to "do it right" the first time no matter what she was attempting. When she was 6 and this was our biggest concern, I actually joined our church's bell choir to show her that even grown-ups have to learn how to do something and that it takes practice to do it right. I would make a point of letting her see *me* learn something new and make mistakes. The only advice I have is to be sure that you don't allow her to quit something because she doesn't think that she's any good at it or that someone else is better. Allowing her to quit will be confirming (in her 13yo mind) that you don't think she's any good either. :grouphug:
  2. :grouphug: You can't control what her friends comment. For something that *she* posts/comments, then I would send her a private message letting her know how her comment hurt you.
  3. We love Stargate here. There is a nude scene in the series opener. It is fairly brief....meaning if you pre-screen and have a TV cabinet with doors, you can pull the doors too and stand in front of until it's passed. That's what we do when we watch that episode. Otherwise, we have no problem with our kids viewing it. My DS was 8 when we starting watching the DVDs....he's 12 now and has been enjoying a Stargate Atlantis mini-marathon while I work on lesson plans. :D We own & watch all of Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis. We started watching Stargate Universe, but it's in a later time slot so there's quite a bit more sex scenes in it - think the new Battlestar Galactica - and it's also a bit darker. I am also confused by what nude scene you mention in the opener of Firefly. There's a nude view of Malcom from the back in one episode, but not the first one.
  4. Nothing like spending the day with extended family to make one appreciate... Yelling :lol::lol:
  5. Without getting political... The Yanks Are Coming :lol::lol:
  6. Texas banking: At any time either joint account holder can close an account or revise an account to be in just one of the original account holders' name. I worked in a bank. That is one of the things we tell people when they open a joint account. He needs to get with the branch manager where the account was opened. I also recommend getting an attorney.
  7. This won't work, but if you have the correct cables and your TV supports it, you can plug your computer into the TV and watch Hulu or anything else you can through the computer. We use our laptop & wireless router to watch TV. For the Wii, we use NetFlix for Wii. We love it! No sports, but lots of movies and old TV shows available for instant watch.
  8. I think that I would take any child that has had an unexplained fever accompanied by an unexplained rash for 2 weeks to the doctor.
  9. I'm going to vote for #1. And this is why: 3 years ago we bought our "forever-we're going to retire here- home"..........and the movers will be here in 3 weeks because the company DH works for was purchased by another company that is moving all corporate jobs (DH) 3 states away. (What a run-on sentence!) There are no guarantees (unless you are independantly wealthy) that the home you decide on today will be the home that you retire in. :)
  10. I don't think I've regretted getting rid of anything...not really. The question that I always ask myself is this: Will I ever purchase another one? In other words, using your coffee mug example, if I had a Christmas/Winter party and were serving a hot beverage would I purchase coffee mugs? Would I purchase styrofoam cups? IF I would, then I would probable keep the coffee mugs, but store them with seasonal dishware (if you have that!) in a separate hutch and not have them taking up cabinet space for daily use dishware. As for the books & videos for the visiting nieces & nephews.... How often do they visit? For how long do they visit? My sister-in-law ALWAYS bring toys, books, and DVDs for her boys when they visit. This is in part because it's a 6 hour drive for them, but also because they are several years younger than my youngest. What's appropriate for my kids is not always appropriate for hers. I would box the videos, books, etc for the nieces & nephews and store it in the attic/garage until their next visit. See how you (and they!) do without them. If all goes well and you don't end up opening the box, then get rid of the contents without a second thought!!
  11. Well, I used Saving Dinner as my starting point. :) I first purchased one of the Freezer Meal kits and prepared everything as written. I told the kids they must try 3 bites and if they didn't care for it, they could fix a sandwich. I made notes for what they did or didn't like (for example, one was good but had too many onions so I placed a sticky note on that recipe to cut back on the onions). I then ordered one of the 1 year subscriptions and chose only the recipes that I knew my family would like and turned those into freezer meals. Taking what I learned from my first Freezer Meal kit, I have been creating my own with our favorites and stocking my freezer. Our family hunts, so I have several kits with goose, venison, and wild turkey. When pork loin goes on sale, I usually buy 2 and divide it into a few roasts (spicy cajun and rosemary garlic - both from Saving Dinner), and various porkchops (Honey BBQ, Honey Apple, Spicy Citrus) with enough meat for our family of 4. I do the same when chicken breasts, ground beef, and steak are on sale. You don't have to follow the Saving Dinner recipes to make your meal planning easier. Take what you learned and adapt it to *your* favorite recipes. :)
  12. Yes, I most certainly do. Do you think Union soldiers should be honored?
  13. I own a 1998 Chevy Tahoe 4wd (fully loaded) that I bought in 2006 with 86,000 miles on it. I don't know how many are on it right now as my husband has it out of state. We just had some basic repairs completed (some gasket/seal thingies went out and 2 sensors) and those are the ONLY repairs we've had to make in 4 years. Oh and on our cross country trip we averaged about 20 miles per gallon. We do regular maintenance like replace the filters and change the oil as needed. My husband has a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup that we bought new in 2006 and we've had no problems at all. My in-laws have a 2002 Yukon XL (fully loaded) they bought used in 2004 (I think it had about 25,000 miles on it) and they've had no problems with that. I hope this helps.
  14. This thread REALLY needs a warning not to drink hot coffee while reading it!! I'm not sure my nasal passages will recover.
  15. No, but not for the reasons that everyone else has given. I wouldn't because the young man is under the age of 17 and your DD is over the age of 18. I would want to protect my DD from any - I don't care how remote!!! - chance of a statutory rape charge.
  16. Oh. my. word..........you have my daughter!!! I, too, have no idea how this happened or words of advice for LovedtoDeath. I have watched my kids easily grasp a new, usually more difficult concept than we've previously studied, and then struggle with something that most people would consider a "basic" skill. In my kids, I think a lot of it is their personality. :grouphug:
  17. Thanks 3and3! :) I am beginning to think it would be easier to go through the county although I'd really prefer not to do so.
  18. Can anyone who homeschools on the Maryland Eastern Shore help me with finding an umbrella? I asked for information a few months ago and was directed to a couple of Yahoo groups, but I'm not too sure that my member requests will be approved as I don't want to disclose personal information to 500+ strangers. I have only been able to locate 2 church umbrellas in the area we are moving to. I called Church A this morning. Someone will have to call me back to verify information and the secretary indicated that attendance at this church was required. I haven't called Church B as of this post. Does an umbrella have to be a church?
  19. You know Gretchen, I was thinking just the SAME THING!!
