  1. When dealing with insurance I have felt like The scene in the Incredibles. Highly accurate with United.
  2. We had a home birth using United. Was a horrible experience. We did get a decent amount out of them in the end but we were one step from the final appeal to get any coverage. If you use them #1 clarify that you are asking for the gap for the initial new patient visit, prenatal care and birth. They tried to claim that only the prenatal care was asked for. Then upon appeal they decided that only the birth was in network but the prenatal was out of network. I suspect that decision was so they could avoid paying anything. We had a large deductible for the birth portion while only in network prenatal care would be fully covered. We also had separate in network and out of network deductibles. A year after her birth they paid about $2000. If we had started prenatal care sooner or If I remained pregnant longer I could have had the full amount paid ( they paid per visit and I gave birth at 37 weeks) United had pulled all sorts of stuff to not pay other claims. We have never had issues with BCBS but when we had BCBS our policy specifically stated that it didn't cover home birth. We still have United and it stinks.
  3. We have a cabin booked with YMCA of the Rockies for a week in mid-June. It sounds really cool. It was booked at the end of last summer and was hard to get even then. We couldn't get weekend days so we have a Sunday- Friday stay. We have a large group going (19) so that may be the issue. The booking policy was not cancellation friendly.
  4. There is a yahoo group for Catholic Sonlight users. The ladies are full of great suggestions for additions and substitutions.
  5. Our Realtor in CA told us pools add about 50% of their cost to the home value. He strongly recommended that we buy a home with a pool if we wanted one.
  6. I think the wolf center is really for the young. The wolves are nice but I mostly remember the stuff for the young kids. I also don't like the freshwater aquarium in Duluth. It is expensive and freshwater fish are just not that interesting. The mine tour is fantastic. Make sure you won't be in Ely during the Blueberry Arts festival. There are way too many people around for the size of the town.
  7. We are hoping to recover from last years unemployment, medical mess and long distance move. Step one is trying to decide what to do with our house that hasn't sold yet. We could rent it at a loss or continue to list it and take a bigger monthly loss. I guess step one is to figure out where we stand
  8. Our mortgage is less than our coverage. We bought the house for around $100 a sq ft. We were told that the land is worth something (we have 3 acres). I also know that our insurance would allow the rebuild cost to go a certain percent over the value.
  9. That does sound like a high valuation. At $120 a sq ft I get $300,000 The $120 is a number I was given in CA. It is for standard new construction. I would probably shop around
  10. I used a variety of OTC mouth guards. I didn't notice a strong difference in brands. I did switch to one from the dentist. This was well worth the cost. I was chewing through the OTC ones in 6 weeks- 3 months. The one from the dentist has lasted 2 years and I wear it more. Since I have broken teeth from the grinding this has been worth it. My advice start OTC. If you find relief and need to replace your very often or find it very uncomfortable then try one from the dentist.
  11. We stretch a roast by making fried rice with the leftovers. We have even made it with brown rice. The number of eggs we add at the end depends on how much meat is in the dish. It works great to add lots of veggies to it also.
  12. Both were enjoyable books but I probably wouldn't use either for in depth literature study.
  13. We love 1st language lessons. 1st grade is simple and quick but enjoyable. Writing with Ease is also a nice program. You might start with level 2 for the 3rd grader. Many people use is one grade behind. If your kids won't be heading back to school before junior high or high school try not to worry too much about common core alignment. Several popular programs did align with common core but they are very different from one another. To see what I'm talking about look at samples of Beast Academy and Math Mammoth. Both are common core aligned but they are different. We use Singapore math the Standards edition. They have a new common core aligned edition but I heard that it has taken away much of the review. The other piece of the puzzle is that you need to do the placement test for which ever math program you choose. Don't worry if your child places a touch behind. You can catch up and probably will. It is more important to teach your children at the level they are at. My children did take the common core aligned test last year after using nonaligned material and they did fine. (They were part of a homeschool charter)
  14. We bought a house this summer while trying to sell our old one. The bank just looked at total mortgage payments. We technically can afford both payments but not really. We are looking into renting the old place out. We did put 10% down on the new place.
  15. We used the Iready program last year and I found it a nice supplement. I would have her spend 15-20 minutes on it 3-5 times a week. I would also up the time you spend working on Singapore math. I'm not sure which version you are using but if you use the Standards version I found the review sections to be excessively long. I pick and choose the parts that my son needs the most. I find the B section of the books goes faster so I do combine lessons in those without excessive time spent. I think 3 books a year is a doable goal if you are focused and up the time spent. I would try to decline other supplements unless you need math facts practice. Completing more books should produce the results that will make your school happy.
  16. I like the Illustraited Classics. I have fond memories of reading those growing up. We own a bunch of them from childhood( mine and my husbands) I do know that I thought that the youngest child from Swiss Family Robbinson was a girl (oops!) I did go on and choose to read some of the classics after these and it helped to know the gist of the story.
  17. We are using an app called Simplex Spelling. It was recommended to us by a reading resource teacher. We like it so far.
  18. I developed it as a child. I was tested all the time while growing up. Definite fluctuations between hypo and hyper. By adulthood only hypo. My brother also developed it as a child. He probably lost a few inches in adult height. My boys have it. Diagnosis at age 14 and age 8. We will see where this goes
  19. We just moved from a house with a pool . We loved it. I would only do a pool if the season was long and if I didn't need to winterize it. Good fencing with a self latching gate is essential. They are expensive but we had long hot summers so well worth it.
  20. When my oldest got her first pair of point shoes I thought it was a bit Harry Potter like. You know "the wand chooses the wizard". I almost expected her shoes to do something by the time they found the right pair for her. Her dance instructor met us at the store. I was totally useless until it was time to pay.
  21. My almost 3 year old is hopeless. She stays dry overnight. She is reliable to not pee when naked for up to a couple hours at a time. She has been know to walk into the bathroom, shut the door and poop her diaper. She refuses to sit on the toilet. We tried underwear a few times. She will keep them dry and then insist on a diaper. She would change her own diaper if I would let her. After we move I will give it another serious try. I might try bribing her with gymnastics classes. She has wanted those for about 6 months.
  22. My husband took my daughter for an eye exam. He called me to bring his wallet since he forgot that. I get to the store and find out he decided on impulse to get an exam for himself. This was supposed to be a one adult in out deal. Instead it turned into a multi hour 2 parent deal.
  23. We did the 8:30 pm family dinners. I used to complain and feel awful about how much my husband worked. My husband has been working in another state since the end of January. He comes home about one weekend a month. It has changed my perspective. I will say that he has taken a job that will be much closer to 40 hours a week instead of the 60 or more. It means a pay cut but totally worth it.
  24. No OT eval. Things got pushed through so it was overlooked. If we are still with this school they will do it in the fall. I am confident that they will work with us but we are most likely moving this summer. I am thinking I will do it when we get settled. What is NLD? He come from a quirky family. I know my husband is highly gifted but we are not sure of his IQ. I tested gifted on a group test as a child (but was excluded from gifted programs for a few years because I tested below disabiling in something having to do with handwriting). He has an older sister that tested gifted with ADHD. His older brother also has strong math talent hindered by handwriting issues and my inability to help him enough. Older bro is probably gifted. He took a 4th grade NNAT in K and scored very high. Older brother is highly quirky but he is so good natured that it hasn't been an issue. Moving and doing the single parent thing is making this all difficult. I would guess our stressful year has brought things to a head. His Dad lost his job in Oct. at the end of Jan he got a temp job in another state. He tries to come for a weekend once a month. We will do OT, Covd and Ed Psyc testing but figuring out where and when is the tough part.
