  1. The processing speed was commented on that it hit both of his weaknesses attention and handwriting. I think we do want to seek meds for ADHD if a dr is in agreement. His actual time on task for his school day is very small. I'm not sure that ADHD is all that is an issue but it could be something as simple as frustration at his inability to show what he knows. He can tell us but anything written is below grade level. I expected the working memory and processing speed to be lower but I was surprised when perceptual reasoning ended up lower. If he has a visual issue that would make sense. It would also explain why he can't remember the direction certain numbers and letters are supposed to face.
  2. Update: We had the IEP meeting today. They qualified him as having a SLD of written expression related to a processing disorder in the area of attention. In his FAPE it was decided that the general independantly study program and the resource program are appropriate. He will get an hour a week of one on one tutoring. If we stay with our school he will also get another hour of tutoring with the LA specialist and I will get extra support from the school (this is not in the IEP but school specific offers of help). We need to get an evaluation for ADHD. Lack of attention was sited from all the testers plus myself and the teacher we work with. The WISC came out weird. Since the psychologist mentioned the lack of attention and that he was moving more and more I'm not sure how accurate it was. I just got a overview as it was part of the whole IEP meeting. The psychologist just seemed so happy at how average Thomas scored. The people who know him don't see him as average. He doesn't talk like an average 8 year old. Verbal 130 Perceptual reasoning 106 Working memory 104 Processing speed 88 Full scale 112 Similarities 13 Vocabulary 17 Comprehension 15 Block design 13 Picture concepts 9 Matrix reasoning 11 Digit span 9 Letter-number sequence 13 Coding 7 Symbol search 9 I did accept their results and recommendations but now am trying to figure out what next. His behaviors are interfering with schoolwork and our relationship.
  3. Thanks everyone. My gut was saying that this contract is nuts. I think we will find someone else. My husband has been living in a hotel since January so we are eager to get him a place. He has been working as a locums but finally has his permanent contract. If we can't get a home soon we will need to get a rental. We asked her for help finding temporary housing and her reply was there is none. You have to sign a year lease. Our big hang up is the house we own in CA. We lowered our budget so we could buy without our home selling. Her response was to show us a listing that is $25,000 over our new budget. She portrays the market as crazy hot but there are lots of homes listed. Only the most amazing are selling right away. I don't think that she likes our new budget. We dropped our max price around $100,000. We don't need fancy and can get what we want for the smaller price.
  4. We are moving from CA to CO. We were refered to a good realtor but now that we look at her contract we are questioning if we should stick with her. She wants us to sign a buyers contract. Not a problem we have done that before but this contract states that we can only cancel if we pay her a $500 fee. It also states that we guarantee that she will will receive 2.5% and if the seller doesn't pay it we are responsible. If we don't buy a house with in 6 months we have to pay the $500. If we cancel we could be responsible for the fees if we buy a house that was on the extensive list of homes that she gives us. We like her but are not sure she understands us as buyers. We also have other issues that could lead to not being able to buy right now. Our home that we have listed we can cancel without penalty. Is this a crazy contract? Has anyone heard of something like this?
  5. We will meet with the whole team on June 9 (waiting on a final confirmation). The school sent out a nurse who did a hearing and vision screening. He speaks clearly and with a huge vocabulary. She brushed off his hashimotos as not a problem. She didn't understand that hypothyroid is different in a child than it is for an adult. I was in the room for the spelling portion and heard him speak and he worked. He tried his best but couldn't spell even simple words.
  6. The other thing I can't figure out is how he possibly scored highly on the writing sample. He writes poorly. I can get a mis spelled simple sentence out of him unless the writing sample was oral it seems impossible for him to score above grade level.
  7. What I'm trying to figure out is if these results point toward any LDs. I have been hearing more comments that my child is just being defiant and not trying but my gut says that something really is wrong with him. Walking into the meeting I want to have a clue if he is likely eligible for services or if we will be brushed off. We have been told all year that he can't be reading as well as he is and not be able to spell by the reading specialist. Ack. Half my post disappeared . It makes sense that no one has a clue. (Blush) So the confusing part is he scored 4 SD below what was expected in spelling. Academic skills was 1.92 SD below the expected while Academic applications was up 2.82 SD. I have the cluster scores and other variation but Im not typing them in again. So my other part of the post was about getting brushed off by the psychologist so I'm not sure we will get any help with his behaviors. We are having issues with him curling up in a ball when something goes wrong and he refuses to speak or let us know the problem. He is also extremely active. We are having horrible issues getting any written output. He still has letter and number reversals and he is having a difficult time memorizing his math facts.
  8. They have done the testing for the IEP evaluation and I have the results of the WJ test. They also did a WISC but I don't have the results. I have a 3 page report but can't upload it due to Internet issues. 9. Timberdoodle seems like a nice box choice. We use some of their choices. You can even do a custom box. Pick the science and history you want to do with both and simplify. They aim for independence and seem to aim at get done and on with life.
  10. St. Paul has the science museum and that is fun. I've never been to the aquarium in the mall. It is expensive but I think there are coupons. I love the MOA. It is a terrible mall to do normal shopping but there are many interesting stores. The amusement park is simple but fun. There is a rainforest cafe that is fun to eat at. When we lived in MN it was definitely something the whole family enjoyed.
  11. We had the world's quickest meeting where I signed the permission to test. They claim the 60 day clock starts now. I didn't argue since they are planning to get it done by the end of May. I guess there are 3 different people to schedule with now.
  12. So our supervising teacher questioned them about this. She told the head of the school that she thought the 60 day clock started in January. Basically they spend yesterday evening scheduling an emergency meeting for today. We will see what happens at it.
  13. We started the process for an IEP evaluation in Jan. We had an initial assessment done with the reading specialist then. We then had to follow her recommendations for 6 weeks. We had a meeting in March that we (head teacher, local teacher and myself)agreed that we needed to follow through with a special Ed assessment. Weeks went by with multiple inquiries about scheduling (from myself and the local teacher)Now we are finally hearing back that they can't do anything because we don't have 60 days left of school. The head teacher says she made a paperwork mistake. I guess she gave the paperwork to the wrong people. We are in a homeschool charter school and have followed their process. Are they following the law in not starting anything until September ? An added complication is that we probably are moving out of state this summer. We were going to follow up with private evaluations after we had the initial data. We are looking at possible ADHD, anxiety and some sort of LD. He is almost 9 and still having letter reversals, can't memorize his math facts, can't really write a sentence independently, can't remember which number goes where in long division, spells like a 1st grader, yet he is reading well above grade level, has a huge vocabulary, and seems to understand math concepts extremely well. I guess maybe looking at a 2e situation. Any ideas what I should do next?
  14. My husband has been renting from a variety of companies since January. He did have a problem with this last car from dollar. They sent someone out with a temporary fix even though he was 1 1/2 hours from the rental place. The next day they switched out his car with an upgrade (delivered to the location he was at) and gave him a discount because of his inconvenience. He would rent from them again.
  15. I really like the Who am I series. You can find it at CHC and there are really good samples. My son loved it. I like how it teaches difficult concepts such as sin in a very age appropriate manner. I will be using it again when my 2 year old gets older. I also have making music praying twice. We like that. CHC has lots of good resources.
  16. My 3rd grader wasn't too bothered by the test although the LA performance task he found difficult. He thought the math performance task was a science test. My 8th grader complained about the volume of writing. The math he found easy. I did hear that kids did cry in the 3rd grade class. Keyboarding skills seem like the best test prep.
  17. We are working hard getting ours ready to sell. A bunch of areas were painted this week. We are sorting and packing away most of our stuff. Money is flowing out like water. A new roof, paint, fixing things required by the pest inspection ( all dry rot), and bathroom fixes. I hope this works out. We are aiming to list by March 1. We have been warned that 60-90 days on the market is expected. I have no clue how to keep the place clean enough
  18. I know that behavior is linked to hypothroid issues. My brother developed it as a child ( I also did). He ended up repeating 6 th grade. His was undiagnosed for years. It likely resulted in a few lost inches. He did have strong positive changes and now is a fine adult. My 14 and 8 year old son were recently diagnosed with Hashimotos. My 8 year old has some issues that we have yet to diagnose. ADHD or anxiety like behavior. Letter reversals and spelling issues. No problems reading but can't tell the # of syllables in words. I really don't know anything as we are just starting our journey with it.
  19. We have had tons of problems with United Health. They remind me of the insurance company in The Incredibles. When I was pregnant we had to get an out of network exception for our midwife. We get a letter saying she is approved. They then deny the 1st claim saying we didn't ask for coverage of the 1st visit ( billed as a new patient visit). By the time this all gets to us I have had the baby. They also denied the birth. Then we fight with them until we received a final denial. We were ready to use the outside appeal but they did an internal review and decided we were right and sent us a check. We also have had issues with medications and them. We have not been successful at navigating appeals for these. We have found medicine that has worked ok and is covered. As a side note my understanding is that United Healthcare is based out of MN. Their own employees have a different insurance because United doesn't meet MN requirements.
  20. I am having a meltdown here over insurance. Cobra is $1300 a month. We are running out of our 60 days and our application has been rejected due to changes in the cobra company. we have mounting bills and if we don't get coverage we may end up with preexisting clauses. I have heard of terrible networks for Covered CA so don't want to use that. We have that Dec 15 date looming. If we miss it we are uninsured until February 1. Covered CA is also $1300 with better coverage but that is useless if we can't see any local Drs.
  21. My kids were on Medicaid years ago. It worked very well for us. The only trick was you needed referrals for specialists. On the other hand we had a top notch pediatrician. When my son needed surgery they refered us to the children's hospital a few hours away. We never received a bill because it was 100% covered. We had a hospitalization and were treated very well. There were a few things not covered but because everything else was free it wasn't a big deal.
  22. Fried rice, burritos ,or enchiladas all work. Fried rice is our go to for leftovers.
  23. We had to hide ours. The 2 year old keeps grabbing them and leaving peels everywhere. She will eat 2 at a time.
  24. Evan-Moor has some nice work books. Their daily 6 trait writing workbook teaches public school type writing. I like their material because it is easy to use and helps us meet public school type goals.
