  1. Your biggest problem will be preventing your dog from doing this again! Many dogs think this is a fun activity and it's difficult to train it out of them. If your dog escapes again, he will will do it again. You need to find a foolproof way to keep your dog away from their chickens. I've never seen a chicken chased to death. The lack of blood doesn't mean they weren't shook or bit.
  2. I haven't read them, but my ds has. It's tough to drag details out of him, but he said they are not inappropriate for middle school or younger.
  3. I don't want to imply that the program itself is below the level of other programs. From the bit that she did, it looked to be on par with other 1st year programs I have seen. But at the time we tried it, my dd already had one year of formal study, two years of early immersion of about 1.5 hours/day, plus other exposure to Spanish. Our goal was to use it as reinforcement, but it was not easy software to use.
  4. My dd used the 2010 Secondary Spanish edition for only a short time, so I can't give you much of a review. She quit because it was far below her level and the software was a hassle to use. It was given to me free by someone on this board, and I'd be happy to pass it along to you. It's just sitting here gathering dust.
  5. She took it at the public school. However, I think it could certainly be self studied with the textbook and study guide.
  6. My dd took AP Human Geography in 9th grade and scored a 4. Her college accepted it for credit with no hassle.
  7. Another issue for landlords ( I suppose depending on the state ) is that if you offer an exception to your rules to one tenant, you have to do it for all of them. Otherwise you could open yourself up to a discrimination suit. So, if his rule is 2 people per bedroom and you convince him to allow 3 per bedroom, he then has to allow 3 people per bedroom for all prospective tenants.
  8. I remember reading something like that, too. And I do agree that you can jump in at any level, and that it does not need to be done every year.
  9. This is how I solve these types of problems.
  10. I'm so glad I opened this thread. These are some great responses on a subject I didn't think would interest me. Thanks, ladies.
  11. I remember once in college I was telling a friend about the vegetables my dad grew in his garden. When I said kohlrabi - she thought I was making it up. She didn't believe me that there really was a vegetable with this funny name. I like kohlrabi. I do not like rutabagas or turnips (mom used to try to hide them in stew and claim they were potatoes - not!)
  12. ... I would definitely not use it for a child who is interested in an engineering/science/math field. Now, there are many people on this board who have shared very high standardized scores for their dc who use teaching textbooks. I do not doubt their claims. However, I don't think it is a good choice for a child interested in a field that requires a higher/deeper level of understanding. Just my opinion! I'm sure others will have a different perspective.
  13. What I remember about the writing at my dd's former elementary school was that it all sounded the same. Every paper hanging on the wall sounded like the teacher had revised and edited to the point that all the kids' papers were nearly identical. It was very robotic and unimpressive.
  14. I would definitely not jump into pre-algebra if your dd is not ready for it. Back up and use a different curriculum for next year; SM or whatever else she might enjoy. It will not be a wasted year, rather it will help her succeed in future years.
  15. I think my dd has the whole series memorized. She is always acting out scenes. I do wish there were more shows like this!
  16. Thank you for that link, Mrs Mungo. I have been curious just what it would take for someone to be banned. I understand now!
  17. Thanks for the update! I was just thinking about this thread the other day and wondering what happened. I'm happy that you find a way around the unreasonable realtor.
  18. Awesome, thanks! Ha! I heard this on an episode of Big Bang Theory! I wondered if it was a "real" song or just made up for the show.
  19. I highly recommend Salsa. http://www.gpb.org/salsa It's an immersion program for preschool/elementary kids loosely based around fairy tales and children's stories. It's free & fabulous!
  20. My ds was exposed to Spanish from birth, and did immersion school from K-2nd. He can not roll r's. His dentist said it is probably because he is a bit tongue tied. It doesn't affect any of the English sounds, but it does affect rolling r's for him.
  21. I originally enrolled my dd in public school because I thought they might know some teaching methods to help my dd that I did not. Nope. She is learning far better at home. We can go slow when needed (math), fast in her strong areas (foreign languages), and use interesting materials that she enjoys learning from (Cobblestone/Calliope history magazines). She is not necessarily learning the same things in the same order that public school kids are learning, but what she learns at home, she retains & enjoys much better. Why? Because we can use material that suite her learning style. Because we are not on someone else's timeline. Because we don't waste time on ridiculous homework assignments. Because she can get adequate sleep. Because she is not sitting in class with her stomach growling. Because she is not worried that her shirt is not 'cool.' Because.... The first 2 weeks after I pulled her from ps, I thought "What have I done? Am I going to ruin my daughter?" But, we found our groove and I stopped trying to imitate public school at home. I am so happy I chose this route.
  22. Our public school requires 3 semesters (1.5 credits) of PE and 1 semester (.5) credits of health. This is a huge pet peeve of mine...even kids who are physically active in school and club sports must take PE. There used to be a PE waiver so a student could take more academic classes, but that option has been nearly eliminated. ETA: Our state also requires State History.
