  1. I've been from 1 - 7 with DS and DD is in 3 at the moment. We'll go right through again.
  2. My mother was a terrible cook. Meat and vegetables only, no seasoning, over cooked. Almost all evening meals served with boiled potatoes and peas. Gag. There are so many thing I thought I didn't like that it turns out I do when they're cooked properly. The list of things that we eat now on a regular basis that I didn't have until I was an adult is HUGE, but includes: rice pasta any kind of sauce except tomato any kind of curry or stir fry pizza vegetables apart from boiled cabbage, iceburg lettuce, boiled carrot, boiled silverbeet, boiled peas, green beans, potato and pumpkin herbs apart from parsley (and that rarely)
  3. Hands on Equations worked well for my son when he was too young for me to consider starting algebra but ready. That early experience has served him well. Dragon box is a good way to get that thinking happening too
  4. I know someone with 16 boys. Or it might be 17 now. I haven't seen them for years, and only have sporadic contact so I don't keep up, lol! When I knew them IRL they had one older boy - 14 or so, then (I think I have this right) an 8 year old, a 6 year old, two 4 year olds, one 2, they had triplets while they were here. There has been another set of twins and then the rest singles since then. They were one of those families that no one believes in real in online communities... if they hadn't been my neighbours I wouldn't have believed it either, lol!
  5. yup, agree - fun introduction, don't expect much retention, gets them interested.
  6. when I fractured my calcaneus I was in a cast for 2 weeks, then a moon boot for 10. I used crutches for about a month after the boot came off. It's been 4.5 years now and I have to choose my shoes carefully and I limp if I'm on my feet for too long. So for me it's been a very long term injury... BUT, I'm old and fat and unfit.... hopefully your son will bounce back much more quickly.
  7. Miquon followed by LoF with a side of Khan
  8. I'm glad she's ok. But WHY was she doing it??
  9. DS did it. The learning curve is STEEP. He had IT guy dad to help him over some of the hurdles in about session 3 or 4, and that set him on the path to carry on. Without that I don't think he could have done it. He came to it with nothing but code.org for background.
  10. I have a pair of precocious little puppies on it. DS is 8 and has been using it for two years or thereabouts, DD is 6 and has just started (I gave into the nagging). It is a steep learning curve but you can't argue with the computer, if you're wrong, you're wrong :-) *they're both proficient on the keyboard though... I think it would be extremely frustrating for a new typer.
  11. Not a Christian Not consevative Not even from your country NOT ok. I would be very unimpressed with last minute plans of this sort, and the 1 am trip would have been the end of our involvement. I understand the desire to encourage teens to be responsible for communication and organisation, but they can't be if they aren't given any notice either. Sorry Daughter of Slipper, I wouldn't be happy with this either.
  12. My bicycle is called Hortensia. She is beautiful.
  13. We currently have Fred, and before that I had Marvin and Borange. When I met DH I named his car Custard. His parents drive Yeti. His brother's care is Hari. Yeah, I name stuff.
  14. I just waited it out and refused to do anything for him that he could do for himself. Picked a time when it didn't matter (to me) if we got to the place we were going, but my perfectionist wanted to. Then I bought a book and sat in the car while he wailed and complained about not being able to get done up. I made soothing noises, acknowledged his frustration, and reassured him that I had faith in his ability. Same with getting dressed and aaaaalllll the other stuff. I'd start getting ready to leave 2 hours before so he had time to do all of the wailing. He's 8 now, and it is a LOT better... the tears are usually only a few minutes, if at all, and he is much more willing to give things a go now. He also repeats to himself all those things I've been murmuring in his ears all these years. "Calm down. DOn't panic. Deep breath. I can do this. Everything takes time. It just takes practice. I am building muscle memory" and similar.
  15. Assigned: 15 - 20 min Kahn academy (3 days a week) 5 min xtra math (if that) (5 days a week) 15 - 20 min Life of Fred (1 chapter + questions, or one bridge attempt) (4 days a week) He fiddles around with a lot of different stuff in his own time too.
  16. I'd probably go through a process something like: maybe I got the time wrong? Maybe I got the date wrong? perhaps I didn't actually confirm? oh no, was it next month? have I offended them? DD, did X say anything about this to you? DD, have you guys had a disagreement lately? I probably got the date wrong. Wait... what if something has happened and I'm the only person who knows? Nah, this isn't TV. But what if? I'll call again. hmm.. maybe I have the date wrong? wow, did I make them really annoyed? What did I do? I am a bad person. They must hate me. What if they had an accident. I'll call again. hmm... family emergency? Maybe they're all sick. I want to go and do something fun, but what if they meant a different time and we're not here? Then we'd be the rude ones. I'll call again. No, I can't call again, that's stalker-y Have there been any accidents around here? Oh this is silly something's gone wrong, let's move on. They hate me. They're dead. Or murdered. Or lost. Or hurt and can't reach the phone. Aliens? Witness protection? SPIES! Arrested! I must have got the date wrong. repeat. :-) I hope everything's ok and youfind out before I (I mean you) go crazy
  17. DH just got a heap of grateful dead stuff, so not a location thing
  18. History Orb.com this day in history, then Anwar Sadat Wikipedia page, then Famous birthdays.com, Labor force statistics (google books), this thread and THEN the Grateful Dead links start. I am not in the US, I wonder if that made a difference? I also search a lot more history than music stuff.
  19. DS has a dog called Dog. DD has a dog called Puppy. but then, I had a large doll called Big Doll. not so much on the interesting names here.
  20. today I asked my kiddos to do what they could on their own, then to do their "computer work" (duolingo, xtramath and typing web), then I asked DS to research a famous building and build it in minecraft, and gave DD a list of castle features and asked her to build be a castle with those features labelled (also in minecraft). Then I made my way through three boxes of tissues and a fair amount of paracetemol.
  21. right now, my lovely man has fetched me tissues, boiled me an egg and is keeping the children away. Sinus infections suck, but he is trying to make it easier.
