  1. Hmmm, I say "y'all" even though I didn't grow up in a region that uses the term and no one in my family of origin uses it. I use it because 1) English doesn't have a standard 2nd person plural and I think it should, and 2) it drives my dd nuts. So, maybe he heard the phrase somewhere and decided he liked it. Maybe he knows it drives you nutty and thinks it's sort of fun. Or he did it for those reasons at first, and got into the habit and doesn't even realize he's using it anymore. For example, my dh has developed a habit of calling potentillas "potentates". At first it was a cute malapropism he used on purpose, but now I think the habit is so ingrained that he doesn't even realize that he's saying the wrong thing. It drives be nutty when people use wrong names for plants (don't even think about calling that forsythia a "For Cynthia" around me; and, yes, people do that without realizing that they're saying the wrong thing). All of which is incredibly off-topic, but more interesting to think about than what I should be doing right now.
  2. That's a new one for me. We've mostly lived in the midwest and the upper east coast (NH, Delaware, and a short stint in Maryland). We had a neighbor once who said "bollom" for "bottom", but I think that was just her own idiosyncrasy.
  3. We have Rosetta Stone and Spanish for Children. Rosetta Stone will give you no grammar, none, nada. The beginning verbs aren't even in present tense; they're in ... my brain just died, sorry, I can't think what it's called ... the one where you say "estan cantando" instead of "cantan" (this is so incredibly embarrassing -- I feel like such a goof for not being able to come up with the grammatical terms I want). And as far as conversation, it doesn't exactly start with conversational stuff, at least what I'd consider a normal conversation. Although she has learned how to say "toilet paper", which dh found exciting given that he sometimes travels to Mexico. That said, it's really excellent for immersion. And you end up knowing the vocab presented backwards, forwards, and upside down. Dd happens to love LfC, so she's thrilled with Spanish for Children. Well, except it's laid out EXACTLY like LfC (except no declensions, of course), and she's realized that she might tend to get them mixed up. As far as whether it will be meaty or conversational, who knows -- I just sort of handed it to her and said, "Here it is -- knock yourself out," and barely glanced at it myself (yeah, I'm not one of those people who gets books months ahead of time so I can look them over and ponder how we're going to use them). So far she's done it for 2 weeks. I need to go find the book and look at it, I guess, huh. We also did some Destinos while our computer was having issues with Rosetta Stone. I was very impressed. It's a good supplement for whatever you decide to use. ETA: We got Spanish for Children because dd had done Rosetta Stone for several months and was sick of it -- she wanted a workbook, and she wanted the grammar laid out for her. The plan is that she will alternate the 2 programs. I wouldn't have simply handed her SfC if she hadn't already used RS for so long and had a good feel for the spoken language. Well, I say that, but who knows -- maybe I would have, knowing me.
  4. Woohoo, I've hit my limit for the day. This has never happened before! Of course, I have no clue how many I gave out so I still have no idea what the limit is. Oops.
  5. Well, now, this is sort of cool: "If you were in The Matrix, you would have taken the red pill, completed the combat training, and started fighting (and beating) agents from day one." But this is sort of ... odd: "you have one or more lifestyle habits that most people would consider odd or unusual." Hmmmm....
  6. This message coming to you from a Mac although dh's laptop from work is a PC; oh the shame!.
  7. Aha, I'm starting to see that all posts on this board are related: Okay, this would be the first thing I'd do with my time for Self Education -- figure out how rep works well enough to institute a slick system like Kelli's. Because, honestly, I have no idea about this "close to the top" business. Well, there we have it -- a use of the word "orgy" that ties in with the Peter Pan thread. Anyone up for a discussion of tithing rep?
  8. We tithe, but I don't consider it a magic spell that will garner prosperity for us. That concept pretty much pukes me out. We consider tithing an act of obedience. For the record, I'm not going to argue with anyone who doesn't believe it to be an act of obedience. First of all, I don't pretend to be the final authority. Also, I get enough of that argument with my (well-off, holier-than-y'all-will-ever-be) in-laws, thankyouverymuch. (Okay, I have issues with a certain branch of the family, and this is one of the hotspots. CAN YOU TELL? :banghead: I think I will be quiet now.)
  9. If it was anonymous, it might've been meant as positive rep. The grey boxes are rep from people who haven't enough posts to "really" rep yet -- if you have less than 50 posts (I think that's the limit) your reps show up grey. I probably gave out some anonymous grey reps when I was starting out. The truly negative reps are, I think, red (okay, I get so little rep one way or another that I'm not sure the color of negative rep).
  10. I would spend 1/2 hour on Latin -- already doing that with Henle while I wait for kids at piano lessons, swimming, dance class, etc. I would spend 1/2 hour listening to a Teaching Co. lecture -- already doing that while I wash dishes, scrub floor, take a walk. I would spend 1/2 hour practicing piano or else start another instrument -- currently manage about 10 minutes per month, sigh. And the other half hour? Hmmm, so many things I'd like to learn and do. That one would probably vary from week to week, month to month.
  11. Thanks for the reminder. The other boards I'm on don't "do" rep, so sometimes I forget it exists. I remember a couple of posts from a month ago that I meant to rep and never did.:blushing: Woopsy, I'd better go find them.
  12. When I thought of orgy in the context of those fairies I automatically thought of food, such as an orgy of ice cream and sweets. Of course, I tend to miss the boat on most contemporary cultural nuances, so that probably has something to do with it too. I would still change the word from the standpoint that my kids would probably repeat it within the context of "unrestrained indulgences" in food, their Barbies would be having an orgy, someone else would overhear, much embarrassment would ensue. Been there, done that, don't plan to do it again.
  13. I got my email this afternoon! Now, I can't remember -- does Memoria Press offer tracking? That way I can obsess over the package every step of the way.
  14. Do we get to vote on how we think he should look? Because this one definitely get my vote. Of course, I hang out with a kilt-wearin', bagpipe-totin' crowd, so that might be influencing my thoughts on the matter.
  15. The new people who moved in up the street are home schoolers. And when the daughter came over the other afternoon she said, "We use Abeka; what do you use?" And I just stood there with my mouth sort of hanging open, trying to decide, "Do I list it all? Analyticalgrammarkeytomathserieslightninglitblahblah? Or do I just say something vague like 'eclectic'?" I finally said, "Oh, we use Well Trained Mind," even though we don't really follow it. I figure we get points for using so many Peace Hill Press products, though, so I shouldn't get smote for sort of lying, because it wasn't exactly a lie. It was just sort of inaccurate.
  16. I picked the 4th option, but with the caveat of no food. Also, if we get fleas again we will zip up to uber-clean, since we'll need to vacuum constantly, so that's the time that I intervene. Sheesh, that sounds so bad doesn't it -- it sounds like we sit around in slothful filth until the insects become intolerable.
  17. This may be it:http://TVCORN.Com/episode/3537/Wilson's_Heart_2.html. I haven't tried it yet. The links I have for this stuff tend to come and go -- one minute it's there, the next it's gone. Good thing my life doesn't revolve around this stuff. WOW! That is so cool how you sent a secret message! Now that I've quoted it I can see how you did that. Okay, this is more exciting than what you actually wrote in white. Hee. I'm so easily distracted. I want to go find an excuse to use this.
  18. I'm with Dy -- I love the spoilers. And might I say that this is the perfect spoiler post? Lots of hints! Ooooh, I feel like I'm eavesdropping on a really juicy conversation when I read this! I need to get around to watching this episode in the next day or 2. But once I watch it I'll know what y'all are talking about. In a way, it's more fun to guess.
  19. Usually, add s to a noun to form the plural Add es to nouns ending in s, sh, ch, x, or z. If a noun ends in y after a consonant, change the y to i and add es. If a noun ends in y after a vowel, just add s. Irregular nouns: child, foot, tooth, man, woman, mouse, goose, deer, sheep, fish And, yes, I learned the above in FLL3. I'm so glad I homeschool so I can learn things out of a 3rd grade book, lol.
  20. Hainstock also has a book on the Pre-School Years. I happen to like the Hainstock books better than the Spietz books, but that's just me. I also second Montessori Play and Learn. There's a set of videos -- Pre-School Power (I think that's the name) -- we used to check out of the library. It shows kids engaged in various typical Montessori activities. Montessori Read & Write by Lynne Lawrence is great for that specific subject. It has activities for ages 2.5 on up to "able to read".
  21. I don't have answers, but wanted to point out that if you are in the U.S. you can call your local Cooperative Extension office for advice on these types of things.
  22. Hmmm, I have the oddest craving for a Butterfinger now. But the only eligible member of the house, 8yo dd, voted Kit Kat. We may need to go to the grocery store and investigate this further.
  23. Oooh, thanks. I hadn't found that one yet.
