  1. I really like RecipeBook, although I just started using it a week ago.
  2. I have...and I'm only on my second year with my first kiddo. I have used SOTW, FLL, and RSO from the beginning and was piecing together everything else. Just recently I had a baby and added a Ker to the school mix with a toddler under foot and finally admitted to my husband I needed some actual curriculum, pre made and ready to go. Over the past few weeks we added the WWE2 workbook, SWS, GWG, HT Teach Art to Children, and Singapore math. My life has been SO. MUCH. EASIER. I am even adding Harmony Fine Arts and Miquon for ds and starting the kids on listening to Song School Latin in the next couple of weeks. They are thriving! ETA: I didn't read your post right, but I'll leave my answer anyway. :)
  3. I just received som HIGs in the mailb and noticed they are the Sonlight version. Are they different than the regular Singapore HIGs?
  4. What is MEP?
  5. I read all of the "fluff" books mentioned in this thread growing up and I read and mostly loved all of the great literature assigned to me in school as well. It turns out that I don't like romance novels, vampire novels, or even most mysteries. In fact, I consider myself sort of a literature snob. I wouldn't worry too much about them ruining your reader. I generally assign my 8 yo one "worthy" novel a week. With all of the other work expected of him, I think his free reading should be of his choice. I'd rather have him reading, say, comics, than watching tv.
  6. Also, if you want to supplement, we find that Growing with Grammar (GWG) is a really great match for reinforcing the skills ds is learning orally with FLL2. We went with level 2 of that as well.
  7. I also think you'd be fine going with 2. The book covers everything. You just need a pencil and paper and some coloring supplies. :001_smile:
  8. If you search the forum you can find some workboxes information. I also have three young boys (and an infant). I recently went to Joann's and bought three of their drawer storage units and implemented the workboxes system for my 8, 5, and 3 yo. It is so helpful. I try to arrange the activities so I can have alone time with each boy. The other drawers are filled with independent activities or something to do with a brother. It really helps keep me on task as well. I spend about 15-30 minutes filling them at night but I am much more organized each day. ETA: I have no idea why that angry face is showing on my post. I'm not angry! :)
  9. Have you considered trying out Reading Reflex? I found it suggested on a thread here somewhere and bought it for my 5 yo who wants to read, but was having difficulties understanding the other ways I was trying. He is a VS learner and it is working out well.
  10. My kids are young (8 and 5) but they seem to do best if we get started on school right after breakfast. The 5 year-old has some free time interspersed with school time while I work with the 8 year-old. The 3 year-old is sometimes involved in school activities, other times just playing. My 8 year old reads at least 30 minutes of free reading per day (usually more). When they are done with their school work for the day, they are free to do as they wish...as long as they help with whatever I ask them to do when I ask it. It works well so far. Normally we are done by between 11-12. Then we have lunch and the little kids (and sometimes 5 year old) take naps. After nap time is more free time until dad comes home. Then it's dinner, family walk or game or movie at night. Then story time as a family. Then bed time for the middle boys. The oldest stays up a bit later and hangs with one parent or the other. I normally take that time to read aloud history supplements or look at art books. Dh and ds watch super hero cartoons on their nights. :001_smile: If we both have other things to do, he can read until around 9:30 or so.
  11. Are you an "if it ain't broke..." kind of person, an adventurous person, does it differ by subject, or the obligatory other?
  12. We are doing watercolor paper pads and paint brushes and a few art themed books this year. We also go with a few pocket or card games. Last year we gave each kid a live plant for the yard. That was a huge hit.
  13. It is both spelling and vocabulary. Maybe I'll just have him do the vocab portion and move on. Thanks all!
  14. Do you still make them do the week's lesson? Do you then just verbally ask them the meanings or to use them in sentences? We are using Soaring with Spelling and I'm trying to avoid bogging ds down with busy work he doesnt need.
  15. I skip the repitition. My son hates it too. We are on to FLL2 and he retains it pretty well. When there are definitions I have him write them down in his notebook. That suits his learning style much better.
  16. I would personally start with FLL2 and double up on the lessons. They are quick but very informative. Then move on to FLL3.
  17. Try this: http://nurturedbylove.blogspot.com/2008/12/cuisenaire-discovery-book.html
  18. This looks great! We love the Come Look with Me books here.
  19. Such a terrible thing to happen to a midwife and the community. :(
  20. Hmmm. I checked out the sample and it looks very...workbooky. :glare: Maybe I'll stick with Van Cleave supplements.
