  1. Our district offers keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, introduction to business computer applications, business computer applications, and desktop publishing and as well as other various computer classes. The district is on a block schedule and each of these classes is worth 1 credit.
  2. He made the Chancellor's List again. He finished his freshman year with a cumulative 4.0 GPA and we are still tremendously proud of him!!!
  3. How about the Time Life dvds on WWI. They may be availabale at your public library.
  4. There are lots of public and private schools that award high school credit for classes take in 7th & 8th grade. http://www.dentonisd.org/5452022412129283/lib/5452022412129283/6th_to_7th_GR_Parent_course_request_presentation.pdf http://www.hilliardschools.org/departments/curriculum/schedulingResources/7thGradeSchedulingPresentation.pdf
  5. In my area the public schools are on a block schedule. They offer ACT Prep - English & Reading worth .5 credit. They also offer ACT Prep - Math & Science worth .5 credit. My opinion is that if public schools do it so can you.
  6. We have a homeschool group in our area that has 164 families as members. A few days ago, the group had a social studies / science fair they had 7 kids participate. They looked like 6 to 10 year olds. None of the teenagers participated. It's hard to get 12 to 18 year olds to commit to doing things with other homeschooling families. They are usually busy do things with their public and private school friends.:001_huh:
  7. I use one made by a friend of mine who is a wizard with Excel. It is is organized by subject. It has drop boxes for grades and credits. It calculates the credits earned and the GPA for me. It has an area for extra curricular activities and awards. It also has an area for ACT scores. I'm so very grateful to my friend. Her transcript has saved me alot of work this year. I wish I would have had it last year for my son's transcript. Blank Transcript 8 - 12.pdf
  8. I think I would not bother to award any high school credit for the 2011/2012 school year. Just consider it to have been 8th grade. If you are able to complete any of the classes you mentioned, perhaps you may want to consider giving a credit or two for high school level work in the 8th grade on his transcript. There are tons of public and private high schools that award credit for high school level work completed in 8th grade. Since you said that he is having problems with algebra, I would continue to work through the courses you are currently teaching right into the 2012/2013 school year and them award credit. By the way, you can always do a trancript that is listed by courses with no start/completion dates listed.
  9. I have the 2006 student text and teachers edition of Democracy in Action. I was lucky to find it at a library book sale still in the plastic wrap for $2. My daughter used it in 11th grade. I also found online quizzes at http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078600537/. My daughter liked it and I will use it this fall with my youngest son.
  10. What about health & physical fitness, religious studies, life skills, keyboarding, civics & free enterprise, ACT prep, dance, music appreciation, or theatre.
  11. I don't have personal experience with either company, but have done a little research since both have became available here in Louisiana this school year. Most of the textbooks and online textbooks that are listed for their courses can be bought on Amazon very cheap. You can even access the sames online course content online yourself for free and have your student work at their own pace. Once the student has read the text, they take the online quiz and email the results to the parent. The parent would be responsible for keeping up with the graded quizzes for transcripts and course descriptions. I will include an example here. http://www.amazon.com/Biology-Dynamics-California-Glencoe-Science/dp/0078665809/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2ST8DDGKQAK1N&colid=1KFCQIGZL156F http://www.glencoe.com/sec/science/biology/bio2004/index.html
  12. Why bother sending scores to any colleges if you plan to have him take the test again. If it turns out that he makes a "great" score, you can pay the fee to send the scores later.
  13. The content of the ACT Mathematics Test is as follows: pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry & 4 trigonometry problems
  14. My son is currently using this text in his Music Appreciation class: Charlton, Katherine. Experience Music! McGraw-Hill. 2012, 3 accompanying CDs included with book are also required. ISBN# 9780077505172
  15. We have Allstate. They accepted my homemade transcript with no problems. However I received a letter from my agent about 2 weeks ago stating that to renew my policy (April 11th) I needed to send in a diploma of high school graduation, ACT or SAT scores, or a college schedule showing a 3.0 GPA. I faxed over a copy of my son's first semester college schedule showing his 4.0 GPA. I haven't gotten my renewal offer from Allstate yet.
  16. I found this recently. It may be of some help to you. http://www.amazon.com/Biology-Dynamics-California-Glencoe-Science/dp/0078665809/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2ST8DDGKQAK1N&colid=1KFCQIGZL156F http://www.glencoe.com/sec/science/biology/bio2004/index.html

  19. I had someone ask me whats the difference between Graduation Exit Exams and the GED? I know that the kids in Louisiana are tested for GEE in 10th & 11 grades. In 10th grade they have to take the English and Math tests. In the 11th grade they take the Science and Social Studies tests. In order to pass they need achieve "Approaching Basic". The five achievement levels a student can earn on the GEE are as follows: Advanced A student at this level has demonstrated superior performance beyond the level of mastery. Mastery A student at this level has demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter and is well prepared for the next level of schooling. Basic A student at this level has demonstrated only the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. Approaching Basic A student at this level has only partially demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. Unsatisfactory A student at this level has not demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for the next level of schooling. I believe that the GED is written on probably the same level. It seems to me that "Approaching Basic" is a very low score. So I don't really see a difference. What do you all think? Am I totally off base???
  20. I graduated my oldest son last May. He just finished his 1st semenster of college with a 4.0 GPA. My daughter will graduate this coming May, and my youngest is a sophmore. I have been homeschooling for 16 1/2 years. None of my kids have been to a brick and mortar school, and the only outside classes they have taken is Cathechism. I do have to say that I am jealous of all of you that live in states that pay for dual enrollment for homeschoolers. If that option were available in Louisiana we would have gone that route.
  21. Most kids of high school age crave socialization with friends. Hopefully by this age they will have established good friendships so that will not be to much of an issue. Use all the resources that you can find to help with high school classes - DVD's, textbooks, online resources, co-op classes, the public library, message boards, and even community college. Keep good records, and start your transcript and course descriptions early on starting in 9th grade.
  22. This is for every Mom who struggles with whether she should homeschool thru high school. I was one of those moms who worried that I made a mistake by homeschooling my three children. None of them ever attended a public or private school. As my oldest son neared high school age I began to doubt myself. I worried that he wouldn't be able to get into college without an accredited diploma and transcript. I prayed for guidance, read a few books about homeschooling thru high school and college admissions, and decided to continue on with our homeschooling journey. I graduated my son last May with honors. He just finished his first semester of college with a 4.0 GPA. He made the Chancellor's List. We are extremely proud of him!!! So if you are struggling as I did, remember that it can be done.
