  1. Addiction is not a choice, that's why it's call addiction. Many do not escape it. R.I.P. Miss Winehouse. May you find peace where the demons can no longer reach you.
  2. Math: Math Mammoth 5 (4x/week), Singapore CWP 4 (1x/week) Lang Arts/Literature: MCT Town (their lit component came out and we will use it, too...."Peter Pan", "Alice in Wonderland", and "Wind in the Willows" for the year), Winning with Writing (very short daily but he needs more writing help) History/Geography/Civics: Hakim (I read to him, he verbally summarizes with the goal of him outlining or summarizing in writing), Intellego (self-study civics, geography, and American History with Socratic discussion and projects) Science: Singapore MPH 5/6 (entire program....tests, homework, HOTS, etc) daily. DS9 is very science-y. He will also do "Stumbleupon" in Astrophysics (spends hours on different websites of interest). Foreign Language: Latin/Spanish (short and daily, both from the "Getting Started with...." series) Logic: Logic Liftoff (once per week) Piano: 10 minutes/day Character/Leadership/Community Service: 1 hour/week whatever DS9 wants to do to help others. DS will be engaged with school (not necessarily in a chair, but learning) for 4-5 hours daily. But he is also interested in career in physics, so I build the year toward that ultimate goal (MIT....HAHA). bcn
  3. Oooo, I think there is a Borders near me!!! Bcn
  4. You can also buy different lancets, too. They come in different depths. Bcn
  5. Preeclampsia/Eclampsia is a condition ONLY in pregnancy. Postpartum, it is resolving, but one does not *still* have it, as the cause has been removed/delivered. I practice medicine and have also experienced preclampsia. I was on bed rest for the last month (gained 4 pounds per day of fluid and developed sky-high BP by the end). Mine took several weeks to resolve after my delivery and I also took 2 medications to help with BP and diuresis after birth. HTH Bcnlvr
  6. We use CK for History, Civics, Geography, and Sciences. Intellego Unit Studies is our *favorite* website (VSL learners at my house)! Bcn
  7. Exactly what you said. Your comment was neither unfair or naive. I have 4 boys and have been in and around scouting for years. Between incidents where bsa didn't follow their own rules, to exclusivity, to outright discrimination, we left. They are a private club, and so can be that way, but that is not what I want my boys learning. About the issues, I agree with many of the comments. Two wrongs don't make a right, but even in my house, breaking a toy has a different consequence than physical violence. HOPEFULLY, bsa will follow through on that issue and amend the situation. bcn
  8. We used "SCVCS", South Carolina's administration of K12, for my 3rd grader. We are leaving to do our own thing for the next year. What we liked: Some of the literature Art class What we did not like: Required inflexible online sessions Busywork Math Time commitment (6 hours every day.....even for first grade in my state) I ended up clicking things off as done and doing our own thing to attain mastery of the subject matter. We also NEVER did school for anything like 6 hours (really?! I laugh just thinking about my 9yo sitting for that long). We did school in more like 3 hours. My kiddo STILL mastered all the material and did exceptionally well on the end-of-year exams and MAP tests. Anyway, posting on the forum always scares me, so I'll be quiet now. Baconlover
  9. Sorry, I had to post again! My DS9: "I sure wish my ego were smaller, then I wouldn't want so many toys." OK, ONE more.... "Mom, I had SO much fun shopping at Goodwill all day with you and gramma, and I'm not being sarcastic!"
  10. DS9, to my husband who had pink eye: "Daddy, why are your sclera so inflamed?" lol
  11. Thanks, Wyndie. I hate it for my little one, who now has to wait even longer for me to pull him from ps to homeschool! He is chomping at the bit. :)
  12. Just a heads-up about tschaa. I joined them on February 25th, 2011. Their website says that I would have my membership in hand in 7-10 business days. After receiving nothing, I contacted them. I have yet to receive ANY membership acceptance or IDs. I emailed (twice), contacted them via their website (twice), and phoned (3 times). No response. Today is March 21, 2011. I understand that things happen in life, etc, but this is NO way to run a business. DO NOT JOIN TSCHAA!!! The website to avoid is: http://www.tschaa.com I am telling anyone who will listen. I am reporting them to the BBB and filing a complaint.
  13. Thank you for this download! It is exactly what I've been looking for!
  14. I use CWP with both kids but another program for math. It works great.
  15. Oof! I could have written your post. My ds9 is just as you describe. We are all over the map with curricula. Science/math, easily 2+ grades ahead. Vocab/grammar, 2 grades ahead. Socially, not so much. Fine motor, not so much (he can't tie his shoes, there, I said it). Writing, not so much. He can verbalize a beautiful response to a reading question, but can't write it down. Writing is our thorn. I have him in keyboarding and that is helping. In the beginning, I DID expect his output to equal his imput. And that went, well, you know, HORRIBLY!! Right now DS9 is enrolled in k12 (until June). He is a "third grader". He has just finished Language Arts 4 and much of the literature/writing work was done verbally or as me as his scribe. He is in math 5 and if I show him another problem like he has already seen (it's spiral), I think he may gouge my eyes out. I can definitely say that the "boxed" approach is not working with this child. I will be keeping an eye on this thread!! :lurk5:
  16. Me: Detail-oriented. DH: Big picture kinda guy. I have to ask specifically and he is obliges, but he reminds me that I need to ask...lol.
  17. I hesitate to post because I am new here and don't know anybody, but here goes. I really related to what you posted. Been there, done that, a thousand times. I found the Primal Blueprint last summer and have not looked back. I am finally a healthy weight and don't have a messed up relationship with food anymore (miracle). Go to Mark's Daily Apple and check out some of the stories! http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ I could go on and on in this post, but it's easier to send you to the Primal website.
