  1. I heard the same thing, so I was surprised that they say they aren't on the website. I wonder if something came up in the process?
  2. Memoria Press Online is accredited, but maybe not by the same groups that your school will recognize. Read more at MPOA's FAQ. WTMA says they are not currently pursuing outside accreditation.
  3. I used EE for 8th for dd#1 (writing-phobic). It wasn't so much teacher-intensive, as I was able to teach it in a once-per-week, one-hour class & then she had "homework" to do, as it was clunky to teach (you had to have both the TM & the student book with you as the info wasn't duplicated), hard to do with just one kid (written for classroom/coop usage with group writing), and didn't sink in at ALL. I believe it has been updated since I used it, so some of this might be better now. I don't know. I agree that kids, even our writer/author/editor (dd#2) kids, need to learn persuasive essays. I looked at a lot of things to use this year for dd#2 and even bought some of them. Good luck!!
  4. This happens to my kids every year (which is why they read and do math in the summer now). I just put up with everything else sliding out. As they get older, more things stick, but it is just as frustrating when they look at you blankly when you mention something that they spent months on earlier this year. I found puberty also made this an anytime-of-the-year phenomenon, not just a start-of-the-school-year one. For those who have never had this happen, count your blessings!! It is crazy making!! OP, I agree to give it a week or two. They should come round.
  5. Well, I'm not a poster mom for awesome writing teaching. Dd#2 should be doing Lively Art of Writing and the Workbook for Arguments (or something like that), but I don't have enough time in my day to teach and correct a separate writing class for her this year, so she'll just be writing across the curriculum and choosing her reading from a long list I have. She took an excellent intro to lit analysis class last year, so I think she has that part down for now. She won't be doing any vocab or grammar. Honestly, this is the kid I worry least about reading and writing skill and most about math. She's also a creative writer. My Dd#1 is my writing phobic kid. Outsourcing a composition class freshman year didn't work out, so she did a homemafe Am Lit class with a lot of inspiration from Janice Campbell's Excellence in Literature. She outsourced writing and lit last year with great success, so I'm trying it again this year.
  6. Late registration for that date is still open. ETA: Of course, that assumes there is still availability at the location you are looking at!
  7. Do you mean this part? Wonder if the list will be different since there is a different teacher. Also, that's probably why the school doesn't know yet either...
  8. I think my son listened to the audio book around 8 yrs old. No issues (and he isn't gifted, just interested in robots).
  9. While I've heard about colleges who have a maximum number of DE credits for Freshman, I can't remember reading about any examples of problems in real life. There are definitely kids who get an AA degree before graduating high school who still are able to apply as freshman with freshman scholarship opportunities to their chosen universities/colleges. I have a Jan bday kid who has done Jan-Dec schooling since she started. I figured at some point that I would have to either half-grade skip her or give her the gift of an extra semester. As my kids are average overall (with areas of interest/aptitude), she'll most likely get the gift of an extra semester. I don't have to decide that until Sophomore/Junior year of high school when the PSAT/NMSQT opportunity comes up. I'd definitely not make that decision this early in her life!
  10. I would definitely contact WTMAcademy because, in the past, they have been very workable in terms of tuition refunds. I think it would be tough to find a good course that fit into my schedule this late in the game. What a tough break!
  11. So, for those of you working on these for your seniors, do you have Course Descriptions for the classes that they are enrolled in for Fall Senior year or just everything through the end of Junior year? [spent awhile writing/compiling 9th-10th grade course descriptions & throwing down drafts of 11th grade ones, but won't have them finalized until next summer. Wondering if I'll have to do a better job of writing/firming up 12th grade classes next summer.]
  12. This is clearly marked a JAWM thread, so I will nod my head and pat you on the back. HSLDA and their fervent disciples can be maddening.
  13. I'm glad you all have a plan moving forward. I hope you have peace in your heart with the discussion and can push through your admin burnout until he is ready to take over the next step.
  14. Mrs. Childress @ Excelsior was an excellent teacher for my DD. While she's using a different text this year than last year (when Landry collapsed & she switched over to Excelsior to finish out the year), I'm sure she will teach the new text well, adding lots of extras to make things understandable. It isn't an AP class, but DD found a love of Chemistry where she previously disliked anything science-related. (It won't be Morning Glory's Clover Creek, but it should be solid academically & enjoyable.)
  15. Our cat was older (13), but she both started throwing up more & stopped eating as much. Eventually, she stopped eating anything. She had a tumor in her digestive tract that blocked everything up. I can't remember the test that showed it - maybe an ultrasound? I don't think it showed up on x-rays. The cancer was fast-moving & very invasive. I'm not saying that's what your cat has, just giving you another possibility. I think the vet should be your next step if you want to figure this out. If you are ok with feeding tuna & dealing with the throw-up, then I'd just keep that up. Chances are, though, that this won't resolve on its own, no matter what it is. It might also be helpful to talk ahead of time about how much $$ you are interested in spending to get to the bottom of it. :grouphug: So difficult when our animals aren't feeling well.
  16. One has their privately-run forum on their webpage. The local one has both a Yahoo group & a Facebook group. We have some people just on one, some just on the other, and a few people who overlap. Someday, it'll be divisive. For now, we're getting along ok.
  17. I took mine to FedEx/Kinkos back in the day and had them cut off the spine. The TM and map answers were coil bound and I left the student pages free. That way, I can take just the pages we will use and have them copied each year. Works great for me.
  18. Yes, it covers salaries & wear & tear on the camp itself. Here is the actual wording:
  19. The YMCA camp is tiered with the highest tier being actual expense. There is no paperwork do which tier you should pay-it is all voluntary. There ate extras that if you sign up for them helps support scholarships for those who can't pay the lowest tier. I like the idea of lowest being actual expenses, middle helping with salaries, and highest helping out those who can't afford the lower two tiers. No one except the billing office knows your tier (although if you don't give your kid money for the camp store, someone might assume you are there on scholarship and "donate" to his camp store fund). Everyone has fun regardless of what they paid and gets to participate in everything even if they don't have the money for it.
  20. I have found that several schools in the middle (Midwest, but really mean central u.s.) don't use the Common App or just have it as an option. (Edited to add: After looking at the Prep Scholars link posted above, what I say here holds true. And some of the few colleges that are listed as taking it also have their own app available instead of the CA. Truman State's is free, for instance.) After all the scary threads on here, I'm not sure how I feel about not filling it out. Relieved? Like a cop-out? Dd still has another year before apps will be started, but people around here have never heard of the common ap.
  21. It is a particular online provider's requirement for that class. (Wilson Hill, I assume.)
  22. Have you ever seen the video (or heard the audio) where SWB, the awesome provider of this forum for us & co-author of TWTM, points out that public school probably would have been the best option for one of hers? And how her youngest, now that the boys are gone, is doing private school? I think you are doing the best thing for your kids. Look at the kid you have in front of you & what is best for them each year, whatever that means.
  23. I dunno, but in some of the older threads, some people did actually buy the meat. DH & I agreed that the truck did NOT look refrigerated at all (just a pickup with a regular topper on it - perhaps there were styrofoam coolers in the back - we didn't check). On a hot day like today and this late in the day, it was just a NO. But, boy was I glad for the Hive giving me a heads up on the Meat Guy.
  24. I have been following your son, Jenny, since you guys decided to graduate him early & send him off to school. I remember at least two (maybe three?) of these type posts. I specifically remember the last one where everyone gave you this same advice (most said to continue to help with the same excuses reasons, a few said to let him sink/swim). I think since you guys gave him a specific goal, a specific deadline, that if he doesn't meet it, there need to be specific actions. I'd give him two options - the marching down to the CC to register for finishing his Associates this fall (with you hand-holding the whole time) or rent/chores/whatever this fall with the plan being he moves out on his own by Jan 1st (unless he's registered for classes for the Winter/Spring semester on his own/no hand holding). Then, I'd stick to it. Note: This isn't my kid & my oldest is still high school aged, so I have no BTDT. But, I have three brothers & all three of them have done better once they have been forced to face reality without my enabler/mother helping them at every turn. That doesn't mean they were immensely successful in life - but I think they would have been better off than they are now had she stopped helping them earlier vs. later. (Can't blame my mom for my eldest brother's death unless you count genetics-related fault, which I don't. Sigh.)
  25. DD was hosting a homeschool teen party & the doorbell rang. We figured the last expected kid was at the door, but DD popped her head into our room & said, "Some guy is at the door??" It was the Meat Truck! (A pickup with a topper on the back.) The guy said, "Hey Momms," and then introduced himself. He said he & his partner had just finished their rounds and the boss said they had to come back with an empty truck, so he had some mean deals for me. (DH said the guy talked like he was in the Ant Man movie.) I turned the guy down & went back inside. I then proceeded to explain to DH about WTM Meat Truck lore. He had never heard of selling meat off the back of a truck. Later, I did a search so he could read some of the old threads. I laughed until I cried. Thanks, Hive. I was prepared because of you!
