  1. I've never had warm cheesecake because I'm generally a rule follower (don't tell my mother!) and all my recipes say "chill 8 hours or overnight." I love cheesecake, especially chocolate cheesecake, so I'd be willing to try it, though. With whipped cream.
  2. I remember there being one lesson near the end that the mom who was running the small group poetry class skipped because we didn't feel it was appropriate for the age of the kids she was teaching. I don't remember all of the things you mentioned, but I wasn't always there during class & the other mom might have skipped some parts or I missed a few things. I know we were disappointed in some of the mistakes in the books & video considering how much we paid for it. However, the kids turned it into a joke: Can we spot Mr. Whitling's mistake today? I thought the coverage of the topics was good. It certainly helped my dd#2 when her online literature analysis class did a very short poetry section. She already knew how to 'scan' a poem and the various meters. The class would have gone much too quickly if she hadn't had the GOP class previously.
  3. :iagree: My best-behaved baby turned into an absolute terror as a toddler. You'd blink & she'd be gone - under the bed with scissors (where you will find bits of her hair later), pouring out your liquid laundry detergent onto the carpet (glug-glug), smears of chocolate on her cheeks (but noooo, she didn't eat any of the chocolate chip cookies that you made for something at church), pushing chairs over to climb on or into places she wasn't supposed to be, etc. I made the mistake of complaining to a woman from church on a particularly tough day. The woman told me to duct-tape her to her high chair. I ran in horror - thinking this woman should never have (more) kids. (She had at least four more after that and had at least three already at the time!) Thankfully, she grew out of most of it (except the cookie-munching, but she's moved onto DH's oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies). It seems to go so slow at the time, but you look back and it zoomed past. It feels like it passed as quickly as the amount of time you get to sleep in one shot when they are babies. Could have been a couple of hours, but seems like only 10 minutes.
  4. I think Great Courses videos would be right up the alley you are seeking. (I think I mixed some metaphors there.) Something like the Great Courses Plus subscription might give you the best of all worlds unless your library has a bunch. There are significant numbers of high quality science courses that go into depth on a variety of topics. (Great Courses Plus doesn't have all the science videos, but it has quite a large number.) I'd check your library first to see if they have any and start there with a topic that would be of interest to your son.
  5. I know that several people on here have use Oklahoma State German successfully. They are one of the very few providers (possibly the only one?) that goes all the way up to AP German. With that said, if you absolutely cannot make it work and want a live online class, CLRC has a native-born teacher for German 1 & 2. (They don't offer past German 2!) The German 1 class started just last week and only has eight kids in it, including two kids of WTMers. There are other providers, including Big River Academy (but they just started Week 3) and Excelsior (but all their registrations are closed). Oklahoma State is the cheapest option, though, so maybe you should check with 8 to see what phone number she uses. Maybe hers is a different number?
  6. I wonder if this is (in part) a reaction to Memoria Press's First Form Greek development. . . .
  7. I've had luck asking the Hive. There were two, at least, that have been found this way. One was a book my brother remembered from childhood. Another was an audiobook my ds#1 listened to, but none of the rest of us remembered it. (The Hive also was able to identify a tv show/movie that my DH watched one time at a hotel. That one was very strange.)
  8. Thanks for working on this. I haven't ever seen one that 'broke' this way get fixed, but this isn't just an ordinary run-of-the-mill thread that you can easily repost. I hope there is a fix for it!
  9. Two things that reminded me of this thread: 1) Made a boatload of appointments yesterday (dentist & eye doc). The vision place said, "We'll text you reminders." I chuckled and replied, "No, you won't because this is my home number and not a cell phone." They usually have at least one automated reminder call. 2) DH took the kitten in for his Will Never Be A Father surgery this morning. We laughed when he got back about how (our) vet never calls to remind you of an appointment. Apparently, much easier to remember an appointment for the furbaby than for ourselves. Isn't that strange?
  10. This is a good description of my mother. Her relatives ate toxic. My father, God rest his soul (now that he is eternally free of my mother), was a sweet and wonderful guy. His relatives are flawed, but ultimately nice people. I would tell my mom that we already had plans for that day/weekend and not elaborate. Nothing you say or don't say will please her. Accepting that will help you move on.
  11. You may have to email them to get the answer file. You don't have to work the problems yourself.
  12. It has to be Reini because he's the only Alg 2 teacher this year. OP, did you try my link & doing the 'forget password' thing? I think that's your best bet.... There were probably messages sent to you & your son's spam folder a few weeks ago.
  13. IEW has history-based writing, although it is a different style than WWS. (The link takes you to their theme-based writing products. You'll want to look for what type of history (Ancient, US, Midieval, etc.) and what level (3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th) that you need.) ETA: You can click through the tabs. They have some short samples of each.
  14. I've done Fallacy Detective & then Art of Argument. You don't have to do FD first at all. AofA stands on its own. There is overlap - and some difference of what to call which fallacy. FD is very informal at our house - very snuggle on the couch, all out loud, talk through things. AoA could be like that, too, I guess, but that's not how I run it. It definitely has more meat to it.
  15. It wasn't our cup of tea, but lots of people like Mystery Science. You can sign up for a free one year subscription to all the current lessons available at the time you join. (New lessons, which they add all the time, aren't available unless you pay for a subscription.) It doesn't hurt to try it - since you can get started for free. You watch a video and then do an experiment/demonstration. It is kinda cheesy, but if your kid doesn't know much science, it can teach quite a bit. There are various subjects, so you can pick what interests your kid. There are usually additional suggestions at the end of the lessons to take it further and you can always check out more books at that point.
  16. :grouphug: I think you have the 'feeling' part down as you pointed out that you are sad for the one. I don't have any advice, just condolences for you and your boys. Tough situation.
  17. Welcome! Look around. There is a lot to see & read about here.
  18. Is there a way to get that last tag removed by whoever added it, if that is the problem? Do you need to add them to your social group so they can access the thread & thus the first post & the tag? (It would be great to take care of this among ourselves if we can!!) Special thanks to those of you who also piped up that you can't access it. I read OSAAT's post that she could access it & I thought I was going crazy. :zombiechase:
  19. It might take a day to hear from Wilson Hill, but they've responded to me before through the contact link. Try getting onto this link, hitting the "forgot password" link, and use your email. (Your son can use his.) I can't remember exactly, but I think that's how I originally got in. My dd has heard from her teacher through the Inbox on her Canvas account - but she had to log in for those messages. Tomorrow is 'meet the teacher' day for Tues/Thurs classes & Wednesday is the same for Mon/Wed classes, so today is a good day to figure this out!! ETA: PM me if you need more help once you get in!
  20. DIscovering Mathematics This might be out of print. I think they phased it out?? I think they now have "Dimensions Math".
  21. Rainbow Resources has it listed for pre-order. (And the guide.)
  22. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/542418-homeschool-high-school-math/ The very helpful pinned high school math thread on the high school board isn't able to be viewed anymore. When clicked on, it says, "IP.Board Message You do not have permission to view this forum. In some cases joining this Social Group will give you permission to view this forum." Is this fixable?
  23. We were required to use a graphing calculator (provided by the high school, could be purchased by students or given back to the school at the end of the year) in Pre-Calc in high school. I was the only kid in the class (of roughly 20) who didn't end up purchasing it. I got by with my scientific calculator in Calc and through my BS in Mechanical Engineering. Many of the kids had 'cheater' programs programmed into their graphing calculators. I'm anti-graphing calculator (and anti-calculator at all early in math), but understand that kids need to learn how to use them for some classes. I just hold off as long as possible!! DD started using her scientific calculator regularly when she took Derek Owens physics.
  24. :blushing: My in-person homeschooling friends are always amazed at my vast (in number, but shallow in) knowledge of such things. They always ask, "How did you find out about all these places (or curriculum)?" :Angel_anim:
  25. Erm. Because I remembered exactly the post you must have been referring to, knew what it was called, and thought I even remembered which board on here it was on. Because, well, the not-stalking, online-provider-junkie thing.
