  1. I 2nd Tami's book suggestion. Another book that has really helped is the Upside-Down Brilliance: The Visual-Spatial Learner by Linda Kreger Silverman. It was full of ideas on how to teach different subjects and VSL resources. I didn't know ds was VSL until I came here and started reading about all the other wonderful VSL children. Writing is arduous for ds, too, and he hasn't even gotten to cursive. :P The Evan Moor series has been great for teaching history. One of the ideas that the books presents is that once VSL learners learn something, they have it and there is not a need to continue to drill it, and often times doing that loses their interest in a subject. Of course, like everything else this might not apply to all VSL's. :)
  2. We don't and I don't know if we will. :001_unsure:
  3. I wear the Physician's Formula Mineral Makeup. I had been wearing BE, but the cost was killing me. :P I love Mineral Makeup b/c it does last a LONG time (provided my dd doesn't get into my makeup bag ). I asked for the Philosophy Miracle Worker package for Christmas and LOVE it! I could see myself splurging on it again. :)
  4. Both my dc's are that way. :) My ds is very particular about the FEEL of clothing (doesn't like fleece directly on his skin, doesn't like hoods on his tops, doesn't like collars on his shirts), etc. He also complains when clothing seems to large for him (although it seems clothing runs a little large for boys anyway). He doesn't like the hem of his shirt to go a certain point past his hips for example. The frustrating thing is the shirts that don't go past his hips are too short on his arms. :P I am inclined to think he is highly sensitive. I don't make an issue of it unless we're going to church or somewhere that requires dressing up, then I ask that he wear a collared shirt for that period of time, and afterward he can wear whatever he wants. Dd doesn't like tags in her clothing. She has eczema, though, so she is very particular about things that itch.
  5. I'm notorious for ordering boxed curriculum and not following through, :(, so I really couldn't say, but I'd love to hear what others have to say. :lurk5:
  6. (((hugs))) I hope the time goes by fast for you.
  7. Some days I want to back to social work. I would love to do homestudies and adoption post placement reports. But then some days, I'd like to open up a little store selling different papers. If I'm really ambitious, I think I'd like to become a midwife. It's all up in the air. :D
  8. (((hugs))), Dawn. I do understand what you mean by the first child & I don't think that's stupid at all. I can totally relate & I see a lot of what you went with Aaron in what we're going through w. ds. I wish I could push rewind and do a redo.
  9. I was using a natural brand from Costco, but ran out and had to grab some Ecos Brand. We have a front loader so a little goes a long way. :) Mekanamom~ We got ours at Wild Oats/Whole Foods, but I also saw it at our local grocery store chain (King Soopers). I'm pretty impressed w. it, too & I have a very messy 3 yo :D
  10. Praying for your ds's health & peace for you, Mama.:grouphug:
  11. Thank you all for your very helpful responses and experiences!
  12. As ds has become older, I've given him more tasks to do about the house. I've always wondered about the concept of allowances. I was given one as a child, but wasn't taught what to do with it, aside from being told, "Don't spend it all." So, my questions are: Do you give your child an allowance, if so how do you determine how much to give them? If you don't, why not? Do you discern what they should do with their money? TIA :)
  13. I guess I never really thought of ds as being gifted until I came here, but it's been a great journey into realizing how he learns and who he is as a person. I've recently learned that ds is highly sensitive. He's also a right brained learner, which has required shifting in my teaching him, as I am very left brained. He is incredibly imaginative and creative. He remembers things in a very detailed way. He loves all things science. He has a crazy sense of humor, like his father. My youngest has an avid, wonderful imagination. She seems to learn things very quickly.
  14. We primarily use MUS because it compliments ds's learning style very well. We also use Singapore Math as a supplement because it is very easy to use and has a great track record.
  15. Dawn, My 6 yo sounds very similar to your son. I had never heard of Junior Lego League, that would be right up his alley. Anyhow, I've tried repeatedly to get ds involved w. activities aside from playdates w. neighborhood and hs pals, to no avail. :( He'll get excited about archery or Karate, but then when it comes down to enrolling him, he opts out  I was pretty reclusive as a child, too, so this doesn't surprise me.
  16. Once a week he will do an illustration and narrate for Science (I write it down), and occasionally for FLL.
  17. Yes, I love the look of Singapore, too & the way some things are taught vs. MUS, but I see us going back after this workbook. We finished Alpha and should be moving on to Beta. Like Tiffani, it was working, I just thought we needed a change. With ds's learning style, I see us quickly returning.
  18. I wish there was some continuity to my hs'ing :P curriculum. I see trends in curriculum that I will use again w. dd & have gone back to w. ds. If I had a crystal ball I would guess: MUS (w. Singapore to supplement- I love them both) FLL (I love the way it's all laid out for you *so* easy to use!) HWOT (I really see us using this for cursive w. ds & print for dd) ETC I will start BFIAR w. dd this coming year, and we did it w. ds, too.
  19. Thanks, Linda, you've been so helpful :)
  20. Also, what is the difference between MPH & iScience? And, I'm hearing that I should keep the science level consistent w. the math level. Is this true?
  21. Thanks, Linda, that was really helpful. I would be using it for a 7yo & 4 yo next year, too. Were you able to use it easily w. both?
