  1. I hope she feels better! If she feels good about the test, it's likely she did well in spite of not feeling 100%.
  2. 8th grader took the non-writing option to cover our state's standardized test requirement. She said the science was harder than the practice test, but the rest of the sections were easier. She hasn't learned all the math topics yet so I don't expect a high score. When I picked her up, she said, "I *really* want to go to school here!" It would be a good uni for her, I think, so it was great to hear that she's thinking about her future. 11th grader said the writing was super hard and she felt she did poorly on that section and on the math. We'll see. I do think that at some point students need to be diligent about making use of the prep book, and take the initiative to thoroughly learn topics they are shaky on. Crossing one's fingers and hoping for the best isn't always a good approach. <vent over>
  3. That is CORN? I thought it was hamster pellet food. Yuck. If they turned the piece of fish over to the "good" side rather than serving it scale-side-up it would have been a bit more appealing. Not sure how it is supposed to fit in the bun, or is that a roll? I find the appearance unappetizing, that's for sure. ETA: Where are the other things listed on the menu? The rice that is supposed to come with the fish, the carrots, the orange or fruit?
  4. That is a good idea! I'm definitely keeping it in mind in case my 11th grader needs to do a re-take. Although the day before might not be possible, as her current #1 fave uni is in another state...
  5. Yes, by marriage (dh's relatives) to 11 great-nieces and great-nephews. No great-greats yet, but that's possible in the next few years.
  6. Same law. Same state? I don't restrict my dd's working hours. There are only so many hours to divide up amongst the student employees where she works. Rarely does she get more than 8 per week, and she doesn't work every week. If there were 20 hours available for her every week, then I'd probably limit IF she wanted to work that much and IF she was having trouble keeping up with her schoolwork.
  7. Yarn. The kids made ziplines and swings and hammocks for stuffed animals, wrapped maze type contraptions all over the bedroom, figured out how to tie different kinds of knots, you name it. Scotch tape Foil (to make knight helmets and swords for the cat --yes, he tolerated wearing the helmet --, stuffed toys, etc.) Paper and scissors. These are all "toys" that others have heard of. I'm guessing the OP means commercial not-well-known toys? My kids were enthralled by Playmobil although you can't really *make* something from it, but it is superb for creative play. One of my kids liked the Brio Builder System, then later played quite a lot with Jawbones, Knex, Geomags (the originals - the current Geomags are not the same size), and of course Legos.
  8. Because of the above part, I decided to ask my dh what HE would do in this situation. He's a liberal not-necessarily-religious type guy who tends to think I shelter our kids too much. He said if it were our young teen in Slipper's family's situation, he'd pull the child from the youth group immediately. "The person in charge is poorly trained, incompetent, or possibly something worse. And I'd do whatever is necessary to get the youth minister out of that job. The resistance to communication with parents, no permission slips, last-minute or unplanned trips -- those are serious issues." Honestly, I was surprised by his reaction. I thought he'd say it was no big deal. *I* think it's a big deal. And I agree with him.
  9. This is very helpful. Apparently I am a verbal processor concrete thinker which is something I never realized.
  10. Only one of my kids used Core F. Favorites: The Hobbit King of the Wind Ali and the Golden Eagle Particularly disliked: Red Sand, Blue Sky The rest of the books don't get a strong response one way or the other.
  11. Private music lessons Swimming, ice skating, martial arts, or other lessons Quality art supplies
  12. 4 year graduation rate 77% 5 year graduation rate 82% (I didn't know students could stay in high school for 5 years...?) There is an end-of-course exam for algebra 1 and biology; both exams show about a 40% passing rate.
  13. Laundry, dishes (by hand & dishwasher), dust, vacuum, prepare some meals, pet care, vacuum, sweep, take out garbage & recycling, help with grocery shopping (i.e. if I send dh, he does the driving/cart pushing/paying while the teen does the actual shopping from my list).
  14. Guess what I bought today? Chaco sandals -- never had a pair before, but they felt great when I tried them on and they are cute too. Capris -- technically skinny boyfriend jeans according to the inside label but they are a bit too short for me (got them at the thrift store so there wasn't the choice of getting the same style in a different length) so I turned up the cuffs and hey presto, capris.
  15. Age 13 AND the child has to weigh enough to trigger the air bag sensor (it automatically sets to "off" between 15-ish and... 100? lbs). One of my dc is old enough but doesn't weigh enough to trigger the air bag sensor, thus is banished to the back seat.
  16. I wear 'em and I don't care whether they are fashion-forward or not. They're comfortable.
  17. This cracks me up! It's probably the warmest spot this time of year. :) Your dd looks like she is having a great time. She is so lucky to get to do so much trail riding! Her pony is super cute. I love his bangs, which my dd informed me is called a "forelock, Moooooom!"
  18. I like these! And I need new sandals. But it looks like they are discontinued. :cursing: Story of my life.
  19. Well, see, in my world everybody gets an EXTRA DAY for the challenge! And THREE extra days in February! Too funny, I never noticed it and apparently no one else did either.
  20. If you did a challenge with your dh in June, I don't see why you would have to say anything about WLS. Wouldn't it be this scenario: June 1st, everybody weighs in. You weigh X lbs. June 31st, everybody weighs in. You weigh X minus x lbs. You did an awesome job in the challenge! So I don't see how WLS would come into play, except perhaps if someone had WLS *during* the challenge.
  21. What I want is the Starbucks Dash: I push the button and five minutes later the drone comes by with my coffee.
  22.   It took me TWO tries at their site before I figured out what was going on.
