  1. We didn't have 8th grade graduation either. Just 12th grade graduation.
  2. No sales here... schools are still in session for two more weeks.
  3. Do you know for sure that she went to the doctor? And that she told him/her exactly what happened? Would your mom agree to allow her healthcare information to be released to you? Would she allow you or another family member to accompany her to appointments, and into the exam room when necessary? To me, this scenario seems unlikely: Elderly person, who is an established patient of Dr. X, and is known to have existing health issues and poor balance, falls twice. Patient tells doctor about recent fall, stating that she hit her head hard and doesn't feel well. Doctor brushes it off. If it really played out this way, IMO it's time for your mom to find a new doctor.
  4. You got me beat! At my school, we could miss 15 days per semester. Any more absences than that, our grades went from whatever they were to F. When we turned 18, we could write our own excuse notes. "Dear School Name, Please excuse my absence yesterday. Signed, Self" Worked every time, not necessary for a reason to be stated... Hello FIFTEEN DAYS OFF! Woo-hoo! Bet that's not how it works there nowadays.
  5. Yep, doctor's note at $90 a pop till you meet your too-high deductible... I can see why parents would take the unexcused absence.
  6. It would taste MUCH better than actual fish fingers & custard, which I made at the request of one of my kids. Well, I suppose individually they're fine, but together.... blech!
  7. I think you could use the heart rate monitor of your choice, as long as it can connect to some type of software or online to track the data. Some old models can't do this. One of my kids will use OM Health next year. I haven't read all the HR monitor details closely, but skimmed them. I think the point is for the students to see how their HR data changes as their fitness improves. My thought was to buy the Polar FT4 as it is relatively inexpensive and gets good reviews. Now there is a Fitbit that collects HR data during workouts, so that is another (although more expensive) option. BTW, I thought the assigned reading book that tells about students improving their fitness w/HR monitors was interesting.
  8. Sorry to hear about your son's accident and prognosis. :grouphug: Definitely a good example though of why not to settle right away. The "like" is for the bolded part. :)
  9. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed using local anesthetic only. Left side during one visit, and right side during another visit two weeks later. I would NEVER choose this for my kids. It was AWFUL. The first visit I stopped counting at eleven shots of novocaine, including one EXTREMELY painful shot in the back of the upper palate. And then sitting there while the dentist cracked the teeth into pieces so he could remove them... AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL. And having to go back two weeks later to do it all over again...
  10. Have you looked at her official score report (PDF on the ACT website)? It becomes available when the essay score is posted. The score report breaks math, English, and reading into subsections. This may help you decide which math and English subsections to focus on.
  11. Some foods I eat now that weren't included in Mom's home cooking: broccoli plantains tofu tempeh black beans plain yogurt (we only got flavored Yami brand in little cups) avocados stir-fried anything any type of Asian or Asian-inspired food kefir mangos red, yellow, and orange peppers almond butter (or any nut butter except peanut butter, which isn't nut butter at all, but I digress) hummus fresh cooked beets (we had only pickled, from a can) non-medium-cheddar cheese: feta, brie, jack, sharp cheddar, gouda, provolone, etc. etc. etc. millet quinoa collard greens kale
  12. I *totally* agree with you. It was sooooo slow-paced with way too many details about irrelevant things. I can't imagine plodding through the several sequels.
  13. Dd says it depends on your two years of Spanish. She said the vocabulary was the hardest part for her. Her Spanish 1 & 2 classes introduced Spanish grammar with some vocabulary; Spanish 3 was reviewing and cementing Spanish 2's grammar, and learning more vocabulary; Spanish 4 was reading books and learning vocabulary, with more complicated grammar details. She also used Barron's SAT test prep and a Spanish grammar book. Dd thinks she personally would not have done well on the subject test after two years of Spanish. She says after three years, she'd possibly have done okay if she'd been able to memorize extra vocabulary. She took the test near the end of Spanish 4 but doesn't have her score yet. ETA: I went through the practice test and was surprised at how much I got right. I did not study Spanish in school. BUT I've sat in on at least six years of my kids' co-op classes and I guess I've absorbed a LOT more Spanish than I realized. And dd wanted me to add that the test has a lot of reading comprehension questions, hence the need for vocabulary. She said a fair amount of the test vocabulary was not from her standard Spanish 1/2/3 textbooks (i.e. animals, clothing, going to school, going to the doctor, traveling) but instead was more real-life vocabulary.
  14. Hey, now! I really liked that book! Lots of interesting things happened, like... um... well... I will have to re-read it to find one, but I'm SURE there's at least one interesting thing somewhere in that book. :D
  15. I read the title, looked over at the CORDED PHONE PLUGGED INTO THE WALL and thought, "Well, no, it's beige, but I think the one upstairs is white..." figuring maybe you'd wondered about how to make it look new again. 'Cause I'd like to know; mine are getting a little shabby. Oh. Cell phone. Oops!
  16. I can knit and crochet. I learned to knit when I was about 8 years old, and I learned to crochet when I was about 40 years old. Which one do I do more... hmmm... well, I knit wearable items and I crochet decorative items. So it depends what project I'm in the mood to make. They both seem equally easy to me.
  17. This is huge. The place where I lived had a retired accountant on the board. She planned out every possible maintenance/replacement project and budgeted for those, and the board set the monthly dues accordingly. We didn't have to worry about how to fund the new roof, hallway carpeting, etc. because all the money was in savings and ready to use at the appropriate time.
  18. Are they both on the same floor? If not, I'd really lean toward top floor vs. bottom floor. And western/southern exposure over northern/eastern exposure (I like my sunlight). Sunny yard/deck would be a big plus. Fewer common walls with the neighbors would be another plus. Anything cosmetic can be updated. Have you hung out in both units in the early evening, when all the neighbors are likely to be home, to check the sound level? One condo I lived in was nice and quiet... and then I found out that the unit upstairs wasn't occupied... sweet! And then Jumbo ('cause the dude walked like an elephant) moved in. Stomp stomp stomp...
  19. kre8tiv... now there's a good name. Too bad I'm done having kids. :tongue_smilie:
  20. In blast from the way-back past... I would be Minerva. My kids are ROFL.
  21. I vote with the "don't take the check" camp. At this point, your sister has no way to tell the extent of the injury to her hand. If she requires surgery, the $20K may or may not cover it. If she were to need additional surgery beyond the first (let's say there was a complication that required another surgery) the cost would likely be well over $20K. Remember she is potentially looking at bills from: emergency room surgeon anesthesiologist hospital/surgical facility diagnostic tests radiologists physical therapist She may have additional injuries that become evident over the next week or so... neck, spine, etc. That could require visits to chiro, PT, or other healthcare provider. Sometimes injuries aren't evident right away.
  22. Lucky, lucky you! I would have LOVED that job!
