  1. I just can't compete... It's okay :grouphug: I don't want to be in the Olympics, either.
  2. Board glitches continue ...continue* continue* continue* continue* continue* continue*
  3. What necessities do I need for cloth diapering? 1) baby 2) poop 3) cloth diapers 4) no gag reflex 5) 2 washing machines 6) diaper pins
  4. From my Right Start book: "In Japan the goal of the math lesson is that the student has understood a concept, not necessarily has done something (a worksheet.)" I think this applies to your situation. It's not about whether you've spent a specific amount of time, but that your child is learning.
  5. http://shop.zaner-bloser.com/c-13-kindergarten.aspx I purchased the Student Edition and level paper. ETA I had a really hard time on their website originally as well.
  6. My grandparents/legal guardians did not give me information. Just a book when I was 13 that I was too embarrassed to open, let alone read. They left it to the schools, but I didn't retain anything from those classes beside the month-by-month descriptions of a baby's development inside the womb (WAAAAY to embarrassed to be hearing things with my classmates all around me.) I had to guess about how things worked, and my husband still teases me about the explanations I came up with :001_rolleyes: My in-laws gave my virgin fiance and I some books (we believed in saving it for marriage) and somehow we still didn't get it right. I guess my point is that depending on the school to teach kids is reckless, not knowing what the kids got out of it that actually meant anything to them. And having them "pass" a test doesn't tell you if they did or not.
  7. YOU are the mom. Period. That's it. Congrats on finally getting the right circumstances :001_smile:
  8. Hello and welcome :001_smile: I not qualified to advise you yet, but I want to bump you up and I hate it when there are a ton of views but no responses :tongue_smilie:
  9. I looked on what I think was the most recent California thread, and I didn't see anyone in El Dorado county, so this may be a long shot, but I don't know anyone who homeschools here. Anyone in Folsom (near highway 50,) El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Placerville?
  10. We are conservative Christians living in California. I'm sure you've heard about the school system here :glare:
  11. I got that EXACT bunk bed ( the newer one OP posted about,) same color and all, in March. It's really solid and nice, and I like it a lot. My 4yo took a few days to be comfortable climbing up and down the ladder (I didn't make him sleep up there until he was) but by day 3 he was just fine. I got a bed rail ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Regalo-Hide-Away-Extra-Long-Bed-Rail/7767660?findingMethod=rr ) to put on the bottom to switch the 2yo to the bottom bunk but found out that the bed has a lip or is recessed or what ever you call it, but you can't put it there. So now I have a big bunk and a toddler bed which is less room than when I had the crib and the toddler bed, but I am hoping in a few months ds2 will be able to transfer from the toddler-bed to the lower bunk. Also, I don't know if your oldest will need the incentive, but I got some awesome wall stickers and put them at the top bunk to get my kid up there. I posted pictures of them on this thread: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260432
  12. It depends on the kid. Right now I don't have a lot of exposure to other people's kids on a regular basis (I'm trying to find a local hs group.) But my best friend's kids who I see the most...I don't love. The oldest does things/says things that make cringe inside sometimes. The 15 month old is okay. She just doesn't say or do anything. I would never tell my friend, though.
  13. I grew up with my grandparents as my guardians, so I don't know it that skews your poll or not. I saw maybe once a year my Papa in just a towel going from the bathroom to his bedroom. My age cut-off for the boys seeing me in less than fully clothed/the occasional towel is around 3; I don't want them to have memories of me like that. For my husband, I don't have a problem with them joining him in the shower once in a while until they're a little older. Although now that I'm thinking about it, I think the Bible says something about not seeing your father's nakedness.... (if this has already been mentioned, sorry, I haven't read the previous replies yet.) ETA: We potty-trained "cold turkey" so ds#1 spent a year going around the house with nothing but a shirt on. Ds#2 frequently takes all his clothes off (he HATES it when he has to put on pants to leave the house) and his diaper as well. I guess it's time to potty-train...
  14. My mainstream Christian Grandmother sees a kinesiologist/chiropractor instead of a regular doctor. He uses "energy" reading in a sense by touching parts of your body and sees if your arm goes weak when he does it (you're holding your arm out and he tries to push it down.) Then he holds herbal medicines samples (which he sells) up to the "weak" areas and sees if it keeps your arm from collapsing when he pushes on it. Considering the "energy" charts on the wall, I'd consider that "new age-y." I don't know if it's actually working (which I don't know how that would) or he's a good con-artist who does actually help people-sort of. He's worked on me. I don't know how me made my arm collapse, but it wasn't me making it happen.
  15. Aggg, those songs! I can't get them out of my head :D It's hard not to bounce to them :tongue_smilie:
  16. :D I copied it from another person's response to the "For smart-alecks: Why are you homeschooling?" thread. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247481 Thank you. I didn't think it was challenging/engaging enough to spend time on it, but my dh showed it to ds4 and he loves it :tongue_smilie:
  17. My husband wanted me to ask the hive what age group you guys think is appropriate for the TV show "Blue's Clues." Netflix Instant has it rated as both 2-4 and 5-7, but I can't see a 7 year old watching it.
  18. :iagree: I have these same "towers" at my place. I have two for homeschool supplies/learning games and two for toys. It is really good for the kids to be able to see which drawer they're in, and they're a LOT less money than those Ikea ones. I used strips of white paper taped inside the front of the drawer to label them. I wrote the name of the toy category, and added a big enough sticker or colored shape so that the non-readers could still put things back where they belong. I have a train sticker for the train drawer, orange triangle for wood board puzzles, yellow square for wood blocks, etc. The kids learned the system very quickly, and having the name on the front helps dh and visitors know where things go. Just be aware that the drawers can come out easily, and 4yos and 2yos like to stack and stand on them. And empty them out all at once. But I still recommend it, and you can use packaging tape to "lock" the drawers by taping the sides.
  19. :iagree:Jonas was smarter, but not as hot as Daniel :001_smile: McKay is awesome-I loved him in "The Tao of Rodney." And in the Teal'c vs. Ronan fight, I think Teal'c would have won. Firefly rocked, should never have been canceled. ETA: I hated Stargate Universe and stopped watching it.
  20. I only have one friend with kids, but we've talked about it and she is just fine with me verbally disciplining her kids and giving the almost 5yo a time-out if needed. This stands whether I am babysitting or she is still in the house. I have no problem with her setting boundaries and disciplining my children if she is babysitting or if I'm in the other room. I think you should talk with the mom and decide what she expects and what authority she wants you to have, and then have her tell the kids in front of you how they are suppose to mind you.
  21. Yeah for them doing the right thing! Sorry about the spit-up, but good for you for respecting their wishes, even if they're wrong.
  22. This site :D I learned about LeeckLock, so now I'm only on here one hour at lunch, and now instead of cooking dinner :D Amazon.com :drool5: I have over 1,000 books or items in various wish lists. Free homeschooling stuff sites that I can print out and use. I save them to print later. Off the internet: The Sims 3.
