  1. thank you for the geography curriculum. i too like the core curriculum for some things and this is a very well organized structure to follow.
  2. we don't do the activities either, and the suggested questions they provide are nothing you couldn't come up with on your own. the most valuable part of the activity guide for us has been the supplemental reading suggestions. if you intend to do a lot of that, it would be worth it to get the activity guide. otherwise, not.
  3. many thanks to everyone who replied to my other thread requesting suggestions for geography curriculums in the elementary years. after reading all of your replies, i find i have one more question..... for these early years, what is your focus? how many years do you spend in the study of geography as a general skill, and when do you switch to studying the geography of specific world regions? or do you do the latter first? or do you do them simultaneously? thank you again.
  4. we recently made it through 6 months in a temporary apartment before moving into our new house. if you are flying then box up all your school materials and ship them to your hotel or relative's house, that way you can bring everything you need. forget about school while you are packing, unpacking, actually on the go, etc. all that is stressful for kids and they deserve a pat on the back just for making it through the transitions peacefully. declare a set time such as morning for school, inform your relatives of your plan, and ask for their help to set up kids table and chairs for you in a quiet spot such as your bedroom. tell them you will not be available for outings etc during your regularly scheduled school hours. that way you are not constantly in discussions with them about what you can do when. hope this was helpful.
  5. we use hwot and have had very few reversal problems, the ones that cropped up with were quickly solved. hwot is nice because it's not too overbearing. we just used it long enough to learn how to print and we will use the cursive book to learn that but after the letters are learned they can be effectively practiced just by writing and having mom correct as you go.
  6. am looking for a geography curriculum for the elementary grades. am also looking for a set of outline maps of the world. (hopefully a curriculum that includes these). what do you all use? thanks
  7. how about just pour some concentrated liquid laundry detergent on the spots and then scrub it in; rub the fabric against itself for a while. i don't know about ink but i had success using that method to get oil stains out of my husband's new dress shirt. whatever you do, however you wash the pants, do NOT put it in the dryer. the heat will definitely set the stain forever.
  8. purell too if you don't have the hairspray or rubbing alcohol. this solvent also works great for cleaning pen off the kid's white laminate school table. (although i wouldn't use it with other table finishes)
  9. we used to have one with a pump and an alarm. we had it pumped yearly by the man who installed it, since it was a special type of system and he was the only one certified or informed enough to work on it. the alarm went off a couple times when we lived there, i think it was the high water alarm alerting us to have it pumped.
  10. i glanced through it and it seemed way too complicated to me. so we use opgttr and the results have been fantastic. my 3 year old enjoys it and it is simple and straightforward.
  11. we use all the books in each group, but i do have my son answer the problems in the textbook. he usually does it in his head because i just taught him that even if the problem is written horizontally instead of vertically, he can still carry the numbers across. it really doesn't make any difference which way they write it. or sometimes he just writes it out vertically in whatever blank space he can find on the page, that is allowed too!
  12. moving them isn't free so you need to gauge if you will make enough money on their sale to compensate for the expense of moving them. if it were me i would donate them all to a family or goodwill now. moving is stressful enough without bringing along extra boxes. it is a good idea to simplify your belongings before a move so everything can be put away more easily after you arrive.
  13. you need to decide if you like list based or workbook based spelling. i believe spelling power is list based (just ordered it today as i prefer working from lists). spelling workout on the other hand is a regular workbook.
  14. take her to sephora or nordstroms or somewhere and have the ladies pick out a bare minerals foundation powder for her. she can just apply it under her eyes with a shadow brush, that's what i do. it will erase the dark lines and blend perfectly. you can use this technique to hide any sort of blemishes (you would use a much bigger brush if you wanted to use the powder as foundation) the stuff blends in very very naturally and doesnt irritate at all.
  15. i would announce as soon as he got up in the morning what the schedule for the day will be, as in, get dressed, eat breakfast, then you may play with legos until such a such a time, at which time we will start school. prompt him before each time so he has plenty of time to adjust. at the school time, tell him, it's time to start. if you start now, you will be allowed to play legos again after school if you still want to. if we cannot start on time, school will run late and you won't have time to play again because of whatever activities or chores you regularly schedule in the afternoon. (schedule some if you need to so he sees that the day is full and he must play his part to keep the schedule running smoothly). this does look nice on paper. doesn't it? but i think if regularly and consistenly implemented it will start to become routine.
  16. i am doing wwe1 with my 6yo and so far it isn't much of a challenge for him, either. but we will just go through it and skip anything too easy to make sure we don't miss anything important.
  17. i say pick your favorite color like black, or green as some people say and do a pant and sweater top both in the same color, then accessorize with dramatic high heels in a pattern or at least contrasting color and some bold jewelry either as a necklace or bracelets (but not both)
  18. watch it with the magic erasers! those things are abrasive. if your table has an oil finish like my 40 year old table did before i had it stripped and polyurethaned you could probably use some 0000 steel wool and some sort of teak oil or something (ask at the hardware store).
  19. do the flashcards on basic facts to make sure she is solid on whatever level she is supposed to know. math is extremely frustrating if just basic addition etc facts are too slow to recall. we use singapore and with my six year old it has worked well to assign an amount of time at the same time each day to do the workbook, instead of a number of pages. he receives a reward when he completes a workbook so that is his motivation. on average he completes one workbook every 4-5 weeks without my ever having to assign any particular number of pages. and with this method if a particular section is more difficult, he can do less pages without any issue, and if the section is easy, he just goes more quickly. it all evens out in the end.
  20. all i know about is breastfeeding, but at least for that, i believe they say that if the baby "tanks up" during the day, he/she won't need to compensate so much during the night. if they sleep too much or otherwise don't nurse enough during the day, they will make up for it at night. but that being said my kids still nursed all during the day plus throughout the night. so go figure.
  21. ice hockey gear for my six year old: skates: 150 helmet: 100 pads: 100 plastic blade covers:20 other clothing/stick: 70
  22. i am a big fan of container store "elfa" shelving. it is very customizable. you can pick your width and depth of shelving, and do any height you want. you can pick it up at a store or order it. you can pick from white or a couple of wood laminate colors. the hardward can be white or shiny silver metal color. if you call their customer service they can plan it out for you and help you order all the little pieces you will need to put it together. it is not a bookcase, it will not sit on the ground; rather it hangs.
  23. the container store and storables both have a nice selection of laundry baskets. ....if you want something more durable have you thought about an actual laundry woven "basket"? stylish to boot!
