avoid hot soapy baths or long showers which dry the skin. if he takes a bath with soap rinse with clear water to get the soap off figure out if he has any food allergies. in our case it is definitely food related. citrus and dairy are big triggers for us. try to avoid the foods you see as problems l'occitane 20% shea butter handcream is very effective all over. costco has carried it off and on. otherwise you can get it at a mall location perhaps. if that doesn't fix it completely we use otc hydrocortisone sparingly.

in my opinion you want to get away from sounding things out letter by letter, especially as you proceed through the book. you want to encourage your student to recognize and sound out whole syllables at once. the more of the book they read the easier this gets. and i never read anything to my child first, i always let her read it and only help her if she has trouble. otherwise you cannot know if your student is reading the words independently or not.

how about adding a homemade timeline? we made one with each date on a separate piece of binder paper. that would give you more of a written record of the work. as we cover a chapter in this or our american history study we make a brief entry. i think it helps to tie the whole book together a bit more. rs4k has lots of structure. we are doing chemistry level one right now with my ds6.

totally worth it. we keep it out in a spare room all the time. everyone loves it. costco had a special with that and another related game bundled together but it sold out fast.

you can purchase molecular model kits at college bookstores or at amazon. we have this one from prentice hall: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_0_9?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=molecule+model+kit&sprefix=molecule+. the different atoms will be predrilled for the correct number and angle of bonds each one can take. marshmallows or gum drops and toothpicks are fun but this is more precise and less sticky. my son pointed out that there is no sodium in this kit; we do not understand why.

along the applesauce line, you could also try canned pumpkin if you have any, maybe part pumpkin and part butter. melted butter will be fine too.

i started encouraging him to read kids novels when he was around six by reading a couple of william steig books and stuart little to him out loud, (before that i had just read shorter childrens books out loud) and then stocked the school room with a broad assortment of other books i assured him would be just as enjoyable. he read charlotte's web for that reason and then started in on the roald dahl boxed set. he just loves all the books in that collection. now he sees reading kids novels as better than tv (yeah!) i did buy him a couple really easy things from the geronimo stilton collection as well as some batman comic books to get him going, but honestly he isn't particularly interested in the former. (who doesn't love comic books) i highly reccomend roald dahl, eb white and william steig for new novel readers. edward eggers is good too. and yes similarly to the other respondents, mid-first grade is when i saw this sea-change in reading kids novels.

one of those wooden states puzzles. if they seem too juvenile, maybe you could challenge them i.e. time them, or buy two and time them against each other. or how about having to identify the pieces blindfolded? or put the puzzle together blindfolded? hahaha but seriously my ds6 has one of those puzzles and playing with it has taught him well. ( have not done any of those games, he just plays with it)

my ds6 and i are doing the experiment from the pH paper packaging and i don't quite get it. we mixed some salt water, attached wires to a d cell battery and put the other ends in the solution. after a few minutes we tested and there was a higher pH and lots of bubbles next to the negative wire. the package says this is because there are a higher concentration of basic hydroxide ions there. but when we look up hydroxide ions they seem to be negative so why would they be attracted to a negative charge? what am i not understanding? if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it.

to get rid of all unnecessary items. if you don't use it, don't plan to and it isn't valuable enough to save, get rid of it. be ruthless and objective. when your shelves are half empty and everything can quickly be put away to allow you to dust and vacuum, house cleaning will be a minimal chore.

i had jaw pain and it turned out to be an abscess from a failed root canal. i needed antibiotics, root canal and tooth rebuilding. the antibiotics got rid of the pain, though.

but i used to bleach white clothes regularly and never had this problem. when i stopped using bleach, the problem started. it got pretty bad, so i scrubbed the gasket with undiluted bleach to clean it as much as i could, then ran a couple cycles with no clothes,just lots of bleach. now i make a point of running a bleach cycle every week or two to keep things in check. i also used the affresh after the bleach scrubbing but couldn't tell any difference after that.

although i usually buy name brands, i have always been a big fan of ultra cheap toilet paper. however once i had to buy some and there were no cheapo brands on the shelf. i found the good stuff is so much thicker and softer that you can get away with using far fewer sheets. i think therefore the price evens out. might as well buy the good stuff.

i am doing level 1 with my advanced first grader and it is not too hard for him at all. he understands it better than i do. we did pre level 1 with him a few months ago and he flew through it. for an advanced third grader i wonder if you should go with level 2. i have not seen level 2 though so hopefully somebody else can chime in.

for math, monopoly, equate, and knockout/muggins are great. for other skills, try mighty minds, super mighty minds, qwirkle, and especially mastermind. get the five-across set get a copy of the mindware catalog, i am drooling over most of it this week!

don't be afraid of the rs4k chemistry. it is beyond straightforward. i am doing it with my ds6 and all we do right now is read through a chapter at a time, discuss it, and then i make up a written open book test for him, which he completes. the only prep this much requires is a few minutes to write out a test for him. i also give him the mid terms from the rs4k website. once we finish the entire book we will go back and do all the experiments. once we finish these we are going to do a kit i bought called C500. my son is most excited about that. the book should give us enough knowledge to understand the C500 experiments. i should mention we have already done the pre-chem so none of this is completely new to him.

keep the trains if you like them, the blocks, the playmobil, a few of the board games (only the educational ones like monopoly or better), the playmobil (who can have enough of that?) and one small container of mixed hotwheels cars. keep a bin of baby toys including pretend phones. give away everything else. your kids will be interested in different toys as they grow up and you need the room.

if you are interested in saving money i might consider spelling power, it's 60 dollars but you don't need to buy another workbook, and you can use it for more than one child. it is not a traditional workbook so you lose all the busy work. their strategy is to test each list first and then have the child study only the needed words.
