  3. This year has been really really hard for some of my kids, especially Dd20 and ds 17 We had 3 months of bushfires then straight into covid Dd was doing uni from home as it went online in April. Unfortunately it us a hands on degree. The teachers at the uni didn't transition very well and were very nasty to students. Dd has now differed her degree. Claims she is never going to complete it and is doing a short online diploma atm. I was seriously concerned for her mental health....... Sigh. She has hatched out some goslings and they are helping her. Ds17 bigger sigh... It was meant to be the year of him stretching his wings and learning to fly..... He was going to go to TAFE 3 days a week and work 2 days. It was delayed because of fires.. Then it was all working for March. For the first time ever he was actually happy. He was even walking around singing.... Then TAFE went online. Just about imopssable to do as it was a course of completly hands on, work slowed down... Depression returned TAFE has returned to one day a week face to face learning. Work is picking up It has been an awful year
  4. we don't have mail delivery. We have to drive to the post office and pick it up. We don't live in a town
  5. Great news from Victoria. Today there is just 2 new cases The strict lockdown is really working My twins cheered when they heard it. They are really hoping to go to grandma's and have chocolate milk with her. As soon as restrictions lift....
  6. This exactly How many centuries humans had small pox, diphtheria, measles etc killing and maiming multitude until there was a vaccine and then something like 95 % of the population needs to be immunised before there is any heard immunity
  7. so we bought the c-pen reader. He was very excited and managed to use it to read the first 2 chapters of an Abridged Swiss Family Robinson. He is so so excited that he can now access books.
  8. My twins have interlectual disabilities and are very slow at learning What we are doing is Saxon plus something I have labled as fun math, basically it is math from several different sources that I have printed out and stapled into books. It is below their level, so like review. It takes them only 5 minutes and they get a sense of achieving success. It include mathematical reasoning from critical thinking co, Fitzroy math, some free worksheets from the good and the Beutiful, some number dot to dots and whatever I come across online. My goal for them is to be able to get them to have some level of functional math for everyday life. At the moment they are still at a level of adding and subtracting numbers under 10, Learning very basic place value, one still has trouble recognising numbers up to 10
  9. When my older ones were still being homeschool Ed I would read at tea time. I am a very fast eater, so I would be able to get a chapter in while they were eating. Atm I am only homeschooling the twins. They have interlectual disabilities and are really struggling to learn to read, but are fascinated with books. I read to them during morning school work. They do narration on what I read. They listen to 1 hour of libervox after lunch. All classics, this year they have gone through all the Oz books, reassure Island, little bear, the secret garden, wind in the willows, mysterious island, and are currently listing to Dr Doolittle. I also read them a bedtime story, something with very short chapters, we have done several nate the greats, lots of those l can read books, the mouse and the motorcycle, current reading is snow treasure.
  10. My Dh taught all my boys how to do oil changes and change a tire around 10 or younger. A favorite project of Dh is to get a ten or just under child to pull a lawn mower completely apart and rebuild it. teaches lots about how engines work
  11. wish I had some useful advice or recommendations. hugs 😞 we are still in lockdown.
  12. I have heard that sheep will bunch up against a fence and panic. so even if the fire doesn't reach them they will die of stress cutting the horse's tail is meant to help stop them catching on fire
  13. horses are meant to have your property number painted on them, tails cut off and let go free Cows I believe you are meant to put them in the paddock with the shortest grass apparently they are pretty smart in a fire Sheep .. sigh. sheep don't do so well . When we evacuated 4 times last summer we took the dogs, the budgies and the cockatiel. we opened the chook pen and opened the pigeon pen . the geese always are roaming around. our housecow was already on holiday at my brothers because the drought had meant we didn't have any grass.
  14. We had pretty bad bushfires in our area last summer. I know that the town or Buchan ( near us) had the fire pass right through. some houses lost. strangely chooks survived. There was one house that burned completely, the car even melted, but the chooks were fine.
  15. Rice, milk and honey It could have been an invention of my grandma Cook some rice, leftovers from the main meal preferred. Poor on some milk and drizzle on some honey. If it is cold left over rice from The day before you can warm up the milk
  16. was she the one who claimed to have 20 or so kids and a house with a bedroom for each of them on a lake?
  17. We have an estate agent. We find it worth the fees. They do 6 monthly inspections. It is their responsibility to find and vet the renters. They do the evicting if needed. If a horder leaves I think they do the clean up.
  18. I think it a very good thing that plastic use is being fazed out. I bring my own bags. For a while all shops were getting you to bag your own shopping so they didn't touch your bags. I Chuck my Reusable bags in the wash.
  19. this doctor has obviously not heard about skin cancer in Australia. about 2/3 of Australians get some from of skin cancer . It is one of the leading causes of illnesses in Australia and people are regularly checked for it. Melanoma can be very quick to grow and is often fatal if not noticed and treated https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/melanoma#:~:text=Melanoma can grow very quickly, normally exposed to the sun. I don't wear sun screen ( allergic to it, cause a histamine reaction of itching ans swelling), but I also cover up edited to add, every day here the weather gives a warning on the UV rating and recommended time to avoid the sun on extreme days
  20. A there are no cases at all on my area, but a few months back a person came to the town that was positive. The local hospital set up a field testing centre and 1/2 the town got tested. Results are available in Vic in less than 24 hours now.
  21. Absolutely free I live in a rural area, so you need to ring ahead and find out the time for testing. Just 100 km away in a large town they have a drive by clinic 8 hours a day. No ringing ahead needed
