  1. I am on the fence. My dd wants to try a few a APs for 9th & 10th however her plan is to DE at our local CC for 11th and 12th grades. She wants the challenge earlier than 11th grade but I am not sure how she is going to balance all her studies with her extra curricular activities and do well. I am glad to hear she doesn't have to report her score and will still get credit for the class without the score.
  2. I am working on a psychology class for next year. Here is a list of books that may be of interest to your student. · · Children With Emerald Eyes by Mira Rothenberg · · Dibs : In Search of Self by Virginia Axline · · The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: and other clinical stories by Oliver Sacks · · Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks · · One Child by Torey L. Hayden · · Reviving Ophelia by Mary Phiper · · The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon · · They Cage the Animals at Night by Jennings Michael Burch · · Turn About Children by Mary MacCraken · · Twilight Children: Three Voices No one Heard Until a Therapist Listened by Torey Hayden · · A Fractured Mind: My Life with Multiple Personality Disorder by Robert B. 3. Breakfast? Lately our favorite breakfast has been a smoothie made with 14oz water, banana, pear, two dates and a handful of kale. Schedule? Walk during lunch, clean the house. Nap? Never:(
  4. Thank you Quark! I needed this structured writing component to help my dd15 learn to write an essay well.
  5. Winter sports? No, however my husband and I walk regularly. Lunch? Leftovers, salad, hard-boiled eggs. Extra curricular activities: dd15-recreational track and basketball, theater (crew) and Science Olympiad & dd13-violin, piano, music theory, theater, year-round softball, library teen council and book club and Science Olympiad.
  6. Water filter? Yes, there is a system within our refrigerator. School? Yes, we start today but only as a half day. It will be hard for my kids to get up early this morning, they have been sleeping in until 10am during the winter break. 2017 Goals? Yes, we ate ice cream sundaes, created individual goals and read them out loud to each other.
  7. When I am needing a shot of inspiration, I go to "Down to Earth" for simple living ideas/recipes.
  8. We plan on asking our neighbor (who is on vacation until March, retired HR counselor) to be our dd's main advisor, dd's softball coach for fitness goals, music teacher for personal goals, and supervisor for community volunteering. My dd is very anxious to get started but she doesn't turn 14yrs until May however she can sign up at 13 1/2yrs but we need to wait for our neighbor to return. Wishing everyone well on their CA journey....share your stories.
  9. CLRC's British Literature class has been good so far however my dd (8th) didn't enjoy reading from Paradise Lost.
  10. I am putting together a psychology class for my dd next year using AP materials (syllabus & books). I can share my schedule with you if you like. Not sure I will go thru the AP process/approval yet.
  11. Dereksurfs--I talked with my dd about what your son did, she's totally excited by that plan....Physics 9th, DE Chemistry Concepts 10th. I was thinking she could do a chemistry refresher prior to taking the DE Chemistry Concepts spring quarter. She would be set to take the DE General Chem series in 11th or 12th. Thank you, I can now stop searching for a chemistry program.
  12. My dd was originally signed up for Physics with Jetta this year but also had Biology which was too much, so she opted for Biology. I keep tossing between Physics or Chemistry for next year, but she wants Chem. Thank you for sharing your thoughts....a lot to think about. She is very mature for her age however I am not sure I want to do the running around with her yet. She's really busy with two instruments, year round softball, theater and science olympiad. She wants to pick up debate in high school...urg, I can't wait till she can drive!
  13. There is a "Chemistry Concepts w/Lab 100" at the cc but I was thinking more along the lines of the General Chemistry 140/141/142 courses for 11th or 12th. I will need to consider your suggestion, interesting idea, thank you. Is your student a high school junior? My dd would only be in 9th so I am not sure how that would work however I know it is possible.
  14. I have spent some time reviewing various curriculum linked on the HS chemistry board but I can't seem to determine the best fit for my student....next year. She wants to study medicine in college. She is familiar with chemistry and will be taking Algebra 2 in 9th. She is completing an online HS Honors Biology as an 8th grader so she is comfortable with labs, reports, schedules, projects and studying/taking for tests. I am hoping to provide her with a solid chemistry foundation for 9th grade. She really enjoys doing labs, especially chemistry labs. I am looking for an honors level, secular, text based, video supplement, and many labs class which can be online or not. She is looking to DE for 11th and 12th and would take 100 level courses in Biology and Chemistry at that time so I am not looking for AP credit with Bio or Chem. What I have considered: I really like Chang textbook (I have it) however I am concerned about the reviews I have read with using "Dr. Tang's" site. I need more information about actual tests and explanations on labs. Thinkwell demonstration units/labs look good however she needs a solid textbook, labs and tests. She needs more than a regular class but not AP because her math won't be there. Help, any suggestions?
  15. I wouldn't push for a Biology AP or CLEP with students who weren't interested. I think a study of forestry/natural resources/water management would be more meaningful.
  16. Khan Academy also has a Statistics course. UC Scout looks interesting, I am curious what a $19 semester offers.
  17. I am looking for some anatomy video tutorials similar to Bozeman's, my dd has already gone through his. My dd dislikes Crash Courses. Any suggestions? Thank you.
  18. Just took a peek. Some of the AP scores for the Social Sciences and English only give three credits with scores of a three and higher. However the Sciences and Maths give three to eight credits with scores from three to five.
  19. Yes, the examples did help me get a better understanding of the fitness, volunteer and personal goals as well as the Expedition trip. Thank you for linking those:)
  20. Yes, U.S. Government could be a better fit. I was thinking I could use the resources and syllabus for the AP course however I don't think I would have her take the test. Can you recommend other U.S. Government curriculum? Thank you.
  21. We are an airline family so my dd's first task was to find out what international airline(s) she could fly on which would accept our pass agreements with my husband's airline and get her to Spain. We fly standby so she would need multiple options out of many cities. Not a simple task.
  22. Thank you Woodland. My dd wants to focus her Spain trip on the historic and cultural aspects of the country. She has lightly begun researching museums and is also interested in the montastaries. I had already given her this assignment before knowing about the Congressional award program, our Spain trip is scheduled for October of next year. I would be interested in seeing an example of someone's Expedition plan. Besides the website, are their actual examples of approved plans?
  23. Thank you Woodland! Our trip includes a couple of days in London before heading to Spain so maybe she could get two of the required "trips" on our trip.
