  1. For us, the choice between Blue Tent and CLRC came down to how much interaction there would be between student & teacher. We preferred the more interactive and engaging weekly live class discussions with fellow students and teacher from CLRC. The course materials for Blue Tent's Honors Literature 1 &2 are comparable to CLRC's classes.
  2. My dd also enjoys library run teen book clubs for more informal discussions of books. She reads a ton of books on her own but we only select some to study and use for writing purposes.
  3. CRLC high school courses are taken after Intro to Literature and Composition I or the equivalent. There is a recommended age range however I'm sure they can work with you. I haven't experienced the classes as overly religious.
  4. I've been thinking about opting my kids out of the whole racket of college prep and sending my dd to spend a year abroad as an exchange student. I have a tendency to not follow the crowd.
  5. Yes, my dd is enjoying their literature and composition classes. I would review the Intro to Literature and Composition I and then send in a piece of your dd's writing to be evaluated. CLRC has been great to work with, very professional and supportive group.
  6. We each read a section from our own books and then discussed it. In addition, I've used portions of study guides for more formal discussions on literary terms/devices, major themes and historic references. My dd also writes chapter summaries, detailed character lists, small writing assignments and essays. The mix of informal and formal discussions lends itself well to homeschooling. I think the depth of our discussions would have been limited, if I hadn't read the books.
  7. I have been back in forth about Blue Tent Literature & Composition classes. Not to muddy the waters but another provider may offer some insight. Classical Resources Learning Center offers several high school courses in American, British and World Literature & composition. Generally six-seven novels are assigned along with four essays and two exams. The class meets weekly for two hours to discuss novels, assignments and progress. http://www.clrconline.com/lit-comp/
  8. OP-try to focus on the kids in front of you rather than what others are saying about their own children. Everyone has their own unique learning journey so it would be unfair to compare them. Use your time wisely, invest your energy in providing the best for your family. Wishing you a great school year!
  9. I would like to join, please add me to the group. I have an upcoming 9th grader so this a great time for me. Thank you!
  10. 9th day of my second (almost) Whole 30 Feeling well this morning, however, I am noticing that I am really hungry in the middle of the night despite not restricting my food intake. With more energy, I am exercising more but it's irritating to be awaken by a growling stomach. I'm proud of myself for making it through my husband's birthday party without eating any of my daughter's delicious homemade chocolate cake. B- Eggs & ham L-Eggplant & greens S-apples & nuts D-Turkey sausage & greens
  11. Awesome! Thank you for sharing your daughter's website, I wish her great success and happiness.
  12. Got about to day 25 but because I was on vacation in Costa Rica, I just couldn't finish. So...I am doing another Whole 30 starting today now that I am home! B-Eggs, ham L-spinach with nuts salad Snack-banana &nuts & fruit D-Turkey, asparagus
  13. The Giver & Farhenheit 451 produced many discussions abou death, value of life, society and laws vs freedoms, responsibilities to strangers. Tale of Two Cities, discussions about class and society, rights of citizens, personality and courage. Emma, expectations of women in society.
  14. My dd took all of Athena's literature courses when she was younger. In sixth grade, she read assigned books-Tale of Two Cities, Animal Farm, Lord of Flies and favorite, Farhenheit 451. Seventh grade, so far is Emma and Great Expectations. She is an avid reader, loves Goodreads, the local librarian is one of her Goodreads pal. I think if you choose books from classic literature as assigned books, you are doing well. We simply discuss chapters, my dd writes chapter summaries and then creates an essay for each book. Fourth/Fifth grades-The Hobbit, Little Men, Swiss Family Robinson, etc. My dd preferred more "adult literature" in middle school. Sorry if this sound choppy, I'm Writing this on my phone.
  15. Try the Lively Art of Writing, it is simple, inexpensive, and a great start for a freshman. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/471529-lively-art-of-writing-formatted-workbook-and-key-x-post/?hl=writing+with&do=findComment&comment=6716472
  16. At 19days...I have no appetite but Ive read that is common. B-Three eggs scrambled L-Spinach salad with avocado & balsmic dressing Snack-nuts & grapes D-not sure yet
  17. Thank you so much ladies! Yes, I agree, I want my dd to explore many options. Because she is bound to change her focus, I am preparing her by giving her a solid foundation. There is so much hype, much like a panacea, by public school parents about these types of schools that I feel even more in the minority. BTW-Yes, she plans on volunteering in a hospital which will hopefully help her decide if it is the right field for her. Thank you for sharing your stories.
  18. Please tell me that our homeschool with plans for DE in 11th &12th grades would be a better option for a dd who wants to go to medical school. The high school is geared towards bioegineering, nursing, pharmacy and traditional high school classes. Are the situational medical experiences really needed so early? Seems more like trade school training? I'm suddenly feeling inadequate despite having a really solid education trajectory plan:(
  19. Urg....local gossips & homeschool clicks. I thought we all had left middle school, mean girls, try mean women:( Petty jealousy, made up half-truths, stirring up the ****, it's really disappointing.
  20. Day 14-- I have tons of energy and really no cravings for sweet things or junk foods. I feel empowered, I can eat so many things that are satisfying. I have also challenged myself to get 70,000 steps a week by walking & attending Jazzercise classes. Breakfast: scrambled eggs w/onions & bacon Lunch: cashew/salsa dip with celery & grapes (they were super sweet) Snack: banana w/nuts & tea Dinner: chicken breast, sweet potato w/chimichurri sauce I have lost weight & inches but waiting until 30 days to actually weigh myself.
  21. Saxon Algebra 2 (for under $15) and Virtual Homeschool Group-self-paced FREE class to go along with the book.
  22. I think your homeschool journey, teaching two gifted children, could be a book! I believe people would be very interested in your homeschool. I also believe it would be valuable if you gathered stories from other homeschools similar to yours.
  23. My dd12 studied entomology last year and we used free materials from NC State General Entomology course.
  24. My dd12 loved this fun Periodic Table of Music genres poster!
