  1. My nephew is a very bright yet completely bored 9th grade public school kid. He has become so apathic towards school, not caring about grades, teachers, students, nothing. The one thing he mentions wanting to explore more is architecture, the art and history as well as engineering aspects. He is a former Lego fanatic. Can anyone recommend independent activities, books, classes, competitions, or camps? They live in Oregon, near Portland. Thank you.
  2. Spanish Homeschool Academy has worked really well in our home. They have been reliable and professional. Their website is easy to use in scheduling homework and Skype lessons. Parents schedule class times.
  3. No, do not call CPS. The example is not abuse. Yes, poor educational options for the kids but not abuse. The stress and emotional trauma for these kids would be horrible if CPS gets involved. Be a friend. Talk to her about your concerns, try to help her without involving CPS. Really CPS is a last resort, reserved for the truly abused and neglected. Signed former Social worker
  4. I would correct her lesson as soon as she has completed it. If there are errors, have her redo those problems on her own. If she misses those problems again, direct instruction is needed. Another option if 30 problems is too much is to assign 15 during math time and the other 15 as homework.
  5. Finish Algebra 1/ Algebra 2 Honors Biology Hewitt Physics HS Spanish 2 Introduction to British Literature American History (summer intensive) Electives: Community Theater Individual violin & piano & voice Year round competitive fast pitch Softball Community service (library teen council, Red Cross) She does best with multiple activities and intensive long term commitments. I just hope I can survive her schedule.
  6. I hope the OP has been helped. I agree with Lori D and it's better to work it out together.
  7. I guess I'm referring to a place where we can talk about homeschooling kids who are accelerated doing hs work. The AL board doesn't work for me any more.
  8. I mean this with the utmost respect and care....why then do we need an Accelerated Learner Board in the first place? I'm not trying to be contrary.
  9. I think the Accelerated Board should include a sub-board for middle&high school not a split in the hs board.
  10. I cross all the boards, my needs include resources for kids with learning challenges, accelerated, middle school and high school. I'm very aware of my audience in each group. I've never felt unwelcome in any group.
  11. I was suggesting a place for parents of accelerated high school students to talk about their specific concerns related to acceleration during the high school years which looks very different for many children on the general hs board. I love the rich community as well however many are feeling depressed. Does anyone else have any ideas?
  12. Maybe an AP prep high school board? I suggested an accelerated high school board earlier but no one responded.
  13. Communication is tricky in the written form, we often miss emotional nuances.
  14. There is a board (invite only) for families homeschooling high school students who have learning challenges. It is really up to parents to choose which forum would best suit their needs, whether that is the general, learning challenges, or accelerated forums. I do believe those using the accelerated forum need more, such an accelerated high school board. Often accelerated parents go to the high school forum for assistance because their children are doing high school level work. It is a delicate balance to navigate in order for their needs to get met too.
  15. I agree, we need an accelerated high school board. There is already a high school forum for kids who have challenges.
  16. I don't have time for a lengthy response but I think, as others have mentioned, that if we consider our audience in our responses, it would be more unifying. If we are talking about struggles, there are several boards to turn to depending on your experiences and needs. The majority of homeschoolers on the high school forum are not superstars or gifted nor are they in general population. I also believe that not one curriculum or one method of teaching is the sole answer to educating a child because we are all diverse. Sharing what has worked is very much appreciated, we learn from each other. Our homeschool journeys are so close to our hearts, I just think we need to tread lightly with one another.
  17. I also think knowing your audience is helpful when posting, an example of an online social skill.
  18. Problems can arises when helpful advice is communicated as a means of one upping. I have seen this type of aggressive communication often. In fact, I stayed away from the boards for a long time because the climate was too toxic. However now I need the boards for resource suggestions and added support with one of my dd.
  19. I would recommend the high school courses from Homeschool Spanish Academy. The classes are skyped from Guatemala and the courses are accredited.
  20. Georgia Public Broadcasting has a video online based chemistry and physics course which may work for your situation.
  21. I agree, especially (for us) more technical science passages.
