My dd also learned to write an essay in the introduction class. I don't know that she is a natural writer however she did do well in the class. The book selections along with the discussions are what my dd most enjoys from CLRC. The workload ramps up more in the high school classes.

My dd was in 6th grade when she took Introduction to Literature and Composition.

My dd has taken several CLRC literature and composition classes. Yes, the two hour classes can drag on a bit however the class discussions and instruction are worth it. The book selections have been challenging and engaging. I would recommend the literature and composition classes to strong readers. The classes generally read selected books within two to three weeks. In addition to the readings, students write summaries for each chapter along with completing weekly steps towards additional essays. My dd has been independently taking these courses, I can't keep up with all her reading assignments.

Ok, I was looking for the words high school biology course rather the college preparatory. I forgot there are various levels of high school biology. Thank you!

I am looking at the SAT subtest for Biology and am confused. On the college board, under how to prepare for this exam, it states taking an introductory college biology course would be helpful. I am confused, isn't this subtest assessing high school biology knowledge?

Correct EndofOrdinary. I am looking for engaging books on history for my soon to be 9th grader. She is reading through American Odyssey now but would prefer reading 6-10 books of nonfiction to another history textbook next year. I would like to give her many book suggestions to choose from. She will be taking an American Literature and Composition class next year as well. I know this is a different approach to history and I haven't worked out all the details.

What are your top five nonfiction American history books recommended for high school? A few that come to mind... A People's History of United States, Zinn 1776, Mcullough Undaunted Courage, Ambrose

Sounds great! I think a weekly live component along with asynchronous videos, assignments and labs would be more interesting to my student. I also think an optional honor's level chemistry class would be fantastic.

In our area, we have a state funded Running Start program which pays for juniors and seniors to take college courses at our local community college. In other parts of the state, students can take classes at the universities. I worry about the teaching differences between our community college and the state university my dd plans to attend because the Running Start program here only provides funds for classes taken at the community college, not the preferred state university satellite in our town. My concern is that the community college caters to these Running Start students with watered down college classes.

I found it valuable to know that a student may have a hard transition stepping into a spring term class (102 for example) after completing an AP introduction class (101) especially if that AP class was taken years prior.

Yes, I believe so. My dd's class also answer selected questions in every chapter which usually equates to two typed pages every week. The honor's distinction is given due to the additional work assigned (essays, projects, discussions) along with the normal reading assignments, labs and tests.

Yes, my dd is covering all 34 chapters in Blue Tent Honor's Biology class. There was also a few chapters added in from other sources as well.

I have finally settled on my dd's year, with her blessing, and now I am crossing my fingers hoping I gauged her time commitments with academics and extra-curricular activities appropriately. She is a year round competitive softball player who will be on two teams (high school and club), she plays violin & piano, plans to join the local high school science club, volunteer and begin to earn congressional awards. She would like to do a winter theater production as well as classes. She thrives with this much activity. Geometry/Algebra 2 American History American Literature and Composition Physics Anatomy & Physiology Psychology Theater PE (Softball) Music (Violin & Piano) Science Olympiad- two events (Anatomy & Physiology and Microbe Missions) My dd wants to take the AP exams. I guess we will know more later if she'll be ready for them or not. She doesn't want to continue with Spanish. By the end of summer, she will have met the two year foreign language requirement for the state college she wants to attend. I am still conflicted about her not continuing with Spanish however she is no longer interested.

I wouldn't force or bribe her to finish a book. I would however provide her more books and reading related activities. Maybe visit the library more often, have her keep a tally or list of books she has read, join Goodreads, and/or have her join a library teen book club. I would support and encourage the behaviors of people who are readers.

I want to make sure I understand. AP scores are not converted into a grade which would affect a student's college GPA however a student could be issued a grade for the class by the high school teacher which would affect their HS GPA. AP scores usually from 3-5 are given college credit (depending on the receiving institution) and scores less than 3 can be canceled or not submitted. High scores are often reported however reporting any score is optional. However schools which are competitive, would like to see those high scores. Is the discrepancy between the AP class grade and the college credit given problematic? Say a kid gets a 3 on the AP test, and a class grade of an A, wouldn't that AP 3 be like a college C grade? Wouldn't that be shaky ground to build upon for the next leveled college class?

Brainstorm costume ideas for a play both my dds will be in however I am also responsible for organizing and preparing the other thirty five needed costumes. I also need to follow up on a couple emails regarding a science team I am coaching. We regularly see Canada Geese, Red-tailed Hawks and Chickadees. The other day we had about 300 Canada Geese in our drive way....they left a mess. Kids had leftover homemade cinnamon rolls and I had scrambled eggs with salsa.
