  1. Super excited for my dd14. She met with her advisor and applied to volunteer at our local hospital. She's in the volunteer orientation now. She has already met with the librarian who has offered to let her volunteer for as many hrs as she likes signing up kids for the summer reading program. Our whole family has decided we would like to do more with the local food bank. My husband printed us all out applications. Wishing everyone well on your CA journey!
  2. I remember several professors at university complaining 20+ years ago about the "watering down" of college.
  3. The only kids I know who DE are homeschoolers. I attribute their DE interest and aptitude to homeschooling.
  4. I have a rising 9th grader and for her, she'll either have to DE junior year or continue taking AP classes because she is ready for the content. I am currently using AP materials to teach American History and Psychology (9th grade, next year) but she will not be testing for the college credits. She will be very ready to begin college as a junior which is free. She finished hs honor's bio and could take AP Biology next year but instead is taking two sciences. I would rather her take Bio 101 and subsequent classes at the university later than have her earn the AP credit now. My dd is also involved in sports, science club, plays three instruments, volunteers and does community theater. She is young with many interests to explore and I don't want to add stressful deadlines/tests. She is also not trying to get into a selective college, so we aren't under the same pressures.
  5. Traveled to Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Hawaii and Yucatán Peninsula with my kids;) Yes, I would move to a tropical climate in heartbeat! Papaya, mango, avocado, pineapple, lime, and coffee.
  6. I would count the theater hours towards a 180hr theater high school credit which would be completed by the end of 9th grade.
  7. My dd is finishing up Bio this year. She plans on taking Conceptual Physics and A&P next year because that's what she is interested in and it will help her prepare for Science Olympiad events. She'll also be studying more Forensic Science.
  8. Thanks Penelope, I think we will focus on AP class materials for now and look at DE later. Psychology and Sociology credits are considered recommended prerequisites for the med school but are not required.
  9. My dd's biology labs had the following parts which amounted to four to five typed pages per lab. Lab Report Title Student name Date Class and Instructor Objective: Introduction: Materials: Procedure: Safety Concerns: Results Qualitative Results Quantitative Results (data table) Conclusion Work Cited
  10. I am not sure what to do about science in her 11th or 12th years. She will be ready for college level classes (biology and chemistry) in those years however I don't want to graduate her early. At least with the humanities we have some flexibility using AP or CLEP. The DE option would be at the university with the medical school so they wouldn't have a conflict with those credits. I just don't know how to go about the DE with the university. The local homeschool community uses our community college for DE which is state funded. The university my dd wants to attend has a satellite campus near us but does not do DE with state funds so we would pay out of pocket. I need to probably just go talk to someone at the university.
  11. Psychology and Sociology are prerequisites for the Med school so I guess AP would be the better option. I have the Psychology AP materials and can proceed with getting a syllabus approved by the college board. I can therefore teach the course, she can have AP class distinction and try to get college credit. Thank you all for helping me figure this out.
  12. Thank you Matryoshka! I appreciated your clarity:) Not to muddy things more but DE may turn out to be my dd's best option.
  13. I couldn't really assign grades to calculate High School GPA for CLEP scores, correct? Would I just report credit awarded on her transcript? The College Board states a score of 50 is roughly a C, the lowest "grade" for which the college can issue credit. I am guessing that her actual CLEP scores just like AP scores, will be evaluated to determine her college readiness and aptitudes prior to DE as well as earn her college credit, if we take that route. I am still on the fence. I have all the materials to teach AP Psychology next year however the one day test option along with the stress of taking "the test" has me a little apprehensive about AP. My dd has already begun learning and quizzing herself from the AP Psychology flashcards so she's motivated. Thank you ladies, I'll keep mulling it over.
  14. My dd13 will be in 9th next year. At the end of summer she will have 5 hs credits. She's on track to attend CC or DE beginning either in 10th or 11th. My question: would getting college credit (Psychology, US History, Sociology) in 9th & 10th be better using AP or CLEP? Her perspective state college accepts both. She is interested in studying medicine. Our thinking is that she could get some of the humanities requirements met in the early high school years and then focus on the college level science sequences (Chen &Bio)with DE. She will have Honors Biology, Conceptual Physics and Anatomy after next year. Thoughts?
  15. Maybe Derek Owens Algebra 1 for quick review followed by Geometry online all at your own pace over the summer.
  16. I usually consume more calories on days I exercise:)
  17. I have challenged myself with a couch to 5K running schedule to prepare for a 5k my daughter wants to run. She loves running so I am supporting her by running it too. I have never been fond of running but I am trying to have a good attitude for her sake. I also want to go to four Jazzercise classes this week, one of which is a strength class. For the past month, I have been eating mostly vegan, low carb, and a little sugar all the while trying to keep my calories under 1200. I haven't weighed myself but the weight is coming off because my clothing is more loose. My goal is to lose 30 lbs before September:)
  18. I am not planning on counting my dd's honors biology for credit even though it is at a high school level. In our state, we can only count high school credit earned in middle school for Algebra 1 or above and two years of high school foreign language, so that is what she is doing. She wants to DE for 11th and 12th so I am making sure she has all her high school sciences completed prior to 11th.
  19. I don't mean to hijack...my dd13 is also interested in medicine. She is taking a hs honors biology class this year and plans to take Anatomy and Physics in 9th. 10th will be honors chemistry and maybe homegrown genetics. Shes also planning to volunteer at the hospital and the Red Cross. She's attending a Neuroscience workshop next weekend at the teaching hospital. I want to expose her to the field as much as I can. I hope I'm directing her in the right direction.
  20. We just use filtered water for all our smoothies.
  21. They were each made specific with their names and decorated with each favorite activities at the time. Example: soccer balls, bats, violin, etc even their favorite colors.
  22. Thanks for helping me see why she may have wanted to return them. We don't have a need for them so it seems better that she find new homes for them.
  23. My SIL texted me today letting me know that she is spring cleaning and wanted to know if I would like the handmade/custom stilts gifts my husband made for her three kids years ago back. My husband spent a great deal of time making each of these stilts for all the nieces and nephews five years ago for Christmas. He did a great job customizing each one. I guess it just strikes me as rude, the stilts were given as gifts, we have no use for them. Is this an example of bad manners? I would never return a gift to the sender especially homemade ones. If I didn't want the gift anymore, I would just quietly get rid of it. FYI-this SIL has never been that warm to me nor ever hosted holidays which included us whereas we have bent over backwards to be inclusive. I texted her back with, "Do as you see fit."
