  1. My dd (9th grade) is taking Spanish 3 at our local high school but we found out they don’t offer Spanish 4. Could a semester (Fall) of Spanish 1 at the local community college next year count as high school Spanish 4? Thanks.
  2. Thank you Lori! Yes, I may change up how she earns another English credit, we do need a break:) I will contact some of the potential providers regarding the age requirements. Write At Home looks interesting. While my dd's plan is DE in 11th, we are also seriously talking about sending her to be an exchange student that year. RootAnn, I saw that class offered but my dd would prefer a secular course. CLRC is wonderful:)
  3. Thanks Lori for taking the time to provide so many resources. Yes, she will earn three high school credits. The books I am referring to are ones she has throughly read/discussed/written essays for in the above classes. I have loosely designed an intensive Shakespeare course for her to complete spring & summer term if she wants to earn an additional elective half credit. She would be reading/studying The Winter’s Tale, Macbeth, Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice. I think she needs to work on writing more research papers however I've run into a couple of issues with finding the right class. Some providers are adamant that students be a specific age/grade. Additionally, I am looking for a secular course not specifically rooted in historic research but rather science and/or social research. Maybe Bravewriter would work with us. I just want to make sure she is all ready for the demands of college writing so her 10th grade needs to prepare her. She plans to DE for 11th/12th either at our local CC or university and she's going for a biology degree.
  4. I am starting to think ahead to 10th grade (dd is currently in 9th). My dd will have taken three high school level outsourced English classes: Introduction to Literature & Composition, American Literature & Composition and British Literature & Composition. She also took a summer intensive grammar course last year. I am not sure what kind of English course she needs next. AP sounds too demanding but I have no experience with it. I've looked at Blue Tent's Honors classes but she has already read at least half of the assigned books. Suggestions?
  5. I'm making steps towards divorce. I am in the process of enrolling one of my dd's into parttime ps high school. I need to find a part time job. I don't want to return to my former career and I'm not interested in teaching/education field. I've gained many skills while homeschooling but I am in transition. Hugs and best wishes to everyone.
  6. Wow, there were a ton of false assumptions made in response to my question. I'm concerned about my nephew's health however as many people reported, boys tend to fill out later. Btw there is no family gossiping or discussions with my SIL...
  7. My nephew is 15.5yrs old, 5'6ft and only weighs 94lbs. I am worried about him, he is just skin and bones. My SIL doesn't seem worried. I have mentioned my concerns over the years here and there to my MIL but everyone just keeps saying, "oh, he'll grow, don't worry." I am worried he has an underlining medical issue. WWYD?
  8. Thank you Ladies! Yes, on your suggestion, I registered our family with ACS. A day trip to Girona would be lovely. We rented an apartment, we can see La Sagrada Familia from the outdoor patio. Did anyone do the bike tours? Tapa tours? Any tour? Are the tours worth the cost? Should we get BarcelonaCard transportation passes? Not sure how we can reserve museum tickets using that card. We plan on staying one day/night in Amersterdam. I would like to go to the Van Gogh museum, take a canal ride and maybe see Ann Frank's home. Any tips/suggestions about Amersterdam?
  9. We are heading to Barcelona in two weeks for seven days and an additional day in Amsterdam. Anyone have some travel tips? Must see places? My dd14 has planned out our trip but there are two days which are flexible. Some ideas....train to Madrid or Southern France. Ideas?
  10. I was talking with my BIL, a high school science teacher, the other day about AP classes and scores. He told me there is a big push for 9th graders to take the Biology AP class when most of the kids haven't even had biology or chemistry. He said the majority of the kids do poorly on the test but it doesn't matter because the school can advertise that they offer the class.
  11. Has anyone sent their high school student with Projects Abroad? My dd14 is interested in the medicine & healthcare program. Thank you!
  12. Are you wanting her to take English when she DE? I think the concern may be from counting 8-10th for the 4 credits of high school English.
  13. I guess I was only thinking of counting the hs credits earned in middle school for the purpose of meeting graduation requirements but I don't plan on reporting them. I could have counted 8th as 9th but I would rather DE my dd for 11th & 12th.
  14. What if the middle school student took English courses from an online provider and those courses were for high school students? I'm not sure I would count the two high school English courses my dd took while in middle school because I don't want to graduate her early.
  15. The one thing I have heard loud and clear from the WTMF is the importance of math, especially Algebra skills. Thank you! My dd is not a math fan but I am making sure she understands math so she can do all the sciences.
  16. Thank you Creekland. I need to rethink the foreign language options. My concern with my dd are her ECs, she has too many. I don't know that she will be able to balance the school load with all her ECs. I guess she will have to choose, it's difficult because she has developed talent in music and softball.
  17. Creekland, I have a dd (upcoming freshman) who is interested in becoming a doctor. Could I pick your brain a little? How does this high school plan look? She has already had two years of high school Spanish and does not want to continue. She has had honor's high school biology and is currently studying Microbe, Forensics and Anatomy with Science Olympiad. She is also volunteering weekly at our local hospital. 9th: Geometry, American History, American Composition/Literature, Conceptual Physics, Anatomy, Homegrown Psychology (AP test) 10: Algebra 2, World History, World Composition/Literature, Chemistry, Homegrown Environmental Science (AP test), US Government 11th: PreCal, Statistics, AP Biology, History & English at CC 12th: Calculus, AP Chemistry, History & English at CC My dd also plays violin, piano, guitar and voice and is a year round softball player. I think she may need to drop the softball at some point because travel ball is too time consuming.
  18. Sure, I've been thinking about Christmas. I might try sewing a set of Christmas napkins for my two SILs, mother and older daughter. I have fabric already from last year!
  19. The Congressional award program is available for young people between the ages of 14-23, so yes, journey00 your daughter could easily join.
  20. 21. We had a great time in Zion! We hiked the Narrows, the upper, middle and lower Emerald Pools and Taylor Creek Trail. Didn't attempt Angel's Landing (sorry it's not Angel Falls). We tried to hike in the mornings however we did Taylor Creek Trail in the afternoon (97degrees) so it took us three hours to complete. We could have spent a few more days exploring Kolob Canyon as well. We stayed at a B&B with a pool which we had to ourselves. Lovely trip!
  22. Thanks everyone! We are renting "river boots and walking sticks" for the Narrows hike. We will probably only do a portion of that hike, maybe six miles. The temperature is rising quickly, it's gonna be 100 tomorrow. We are starting as early as we can. I'll look at Angles Falls again--thank you!
  23. Recommended moderate favorite hikes in Zion? My husband and I would like to do Narrows, anyone done that one? We leave for Zion this Wednesday. Thanks:)
