  1. (cross posted on the General Ed Board) Hi everyone, I have reformatted the Lively Art of Writing workbook and teacher key that Still Waters and mjbucks1 so generously worked on a while ago. I did this so that my son will have more white/ writing space when he eventually uses the resource. I am posting the links here, with the original compilers' permission. If you are not familiar with the Lively Art of Writing, here's the Amazon link. You should be able to access other discussions on LAOW by searching through the archives or clicking on the "also-tagged" discussions below. I hope this is
  2. I am reposting my question.....for some reason this post made its way in the social groups once clicked on? Strange.... I'll try again. Sorry.
  3. I have a 9th grader who stared homeschooling this year. While in school, writing was not a priority, at all! Luckily, she's a decent writer and doesn't stress when I ask her to write something, however, she definetly needs instruction in writing. I have looked into LAoW and LToW and they both have gotten great reviews. I'm just wondering what exactly are the differences are in them? From what I'm understanding LToW is geared more towards persuasive essays, correct? What about LAoW, does it focus on a specific type?
  4. I didn't have any luck with this on the high school board, so maybe I'll have better luck on this board... I have a 9th grader who stared homeschooling this year. 5. I've compared the table of contents but can't really get a feel for how these two programs compare. Does Lively Art of Writing spend more time on developing a thesis? If you were thinking about using one with 8th graders, which would be a better choice? eta: tag

  7. In an attempt to make this little treasure a bit more user-friendly, and as a preemptive measure against my ds using the book’s miniscule type-face as an excuse for “missing†assignments (*sigh*- if only he’d use his powers for good), I am in the process of creating a workbook of sorts for Payne’s The Lively Art of Writing, and I thought I’d offer to share. I’m about halfway done. (through chapter 7 of 15) I’m not sure when I’ll have a chance to complete it, but I’m hoping to take some time in August to finish it up. It’s nothing fancy. For each chapter, I typed up the ch
  8. Dd and I are not enjoying LAOW, especially the actual assignments and topics provided. She is in Chapter 3. I personally don't like the vocabulary assignment at all. Complaining in sentences doesn't seem like a good use of time. The topics for the essay are nothing that she has any true experience with or opinion on since she's not in school. Those are the situations when she struggles most to write an essay, forming opinions when you don't already have one. I own The Elegant Essay, so I'm wondering if I should just change the assignments in LAOW and try to stick with the method, or drop
  9. I want to teach my 14yo daughter how to write a good persuasive essay over the summer. She'll be going into a new co-op with a speech/debate class so I want her to have some preparation.. She has completed IEW's SICC B in 10 weeks, and almost finished WWS 1 this year. She's a very good creative writer but doesn't enjoy academic writing. I own The Elegant Essay and even tried to use this with her after we finished SICC B, but it was so disorganized and hard to teach from. I had no time to prep before doing a lesson with her! Doing this through the summer is an option, but I wanted to se
  10. I'd just like to thank those of you who have, over the years, mentioned this little book. I bought it well over a year ago but am just now sitting down to go through it. What a gem! If any of you remember my Lost Tools of Writing thread a couple of weeks ago (the one where I felt like I was being stalked by the LToW militia), I am trying to coordinate the two of them, matching segments of LToW ($100) with the corresponding sections of Lively Art ($6). No doubt the LToW Army will cringe when they read this, but the two programs are not really that far apart in what they teach. Lively A
  11. I just bought this (used) and wondering if I should have bought an updated version-is there one? And if it's all just the older version, what, if anything, in it is outdated information about writing? I bought this based on other people on here recommending it (thank you :)), got it today, and I do love it. I'd like to use this as *my* handbook to help me know how to teach writing to dd11, but I don't know enough about writing to know what is currently accepted. (btw, we also use IEW but not the "higher level" units yet)
  12. Just got the LAoW and it looks really good! DD did CW up to Diogenes before both of us burned out, so we never really got beyond expository writing. I can tell she is struggling with what I am trying to have her do this year, which is to write an essay on the prompts in Omnibus. So, I am now thinking that I will continue to have her write an expository essay on one the chapters in the History of the Ancient World (swb) and to use this first semester to go through the LAoW. The question is, have you used this as part of a course on essay writing for high school? If so, how did you do it? I am t
  13. I'm teaching a literature and composition class to a small group of high schoolers this year, and I'm currently having them read The Lively Art of Writing. Has anyone come across any teaching resources for this book? I'm creating my own "lecture notes" and wondered if I don't need to reinvent the wheel (once again). :) Thanks for any insights! ~Brigid
  14. I need to use the resources we have on hand, and this seems to address many of the basics. Any experience? TIA!
  15. How quickly did you move through the chapters and exercises? Did you use this in addition to another program or as a standalone program? Thanks!
  16. I think I have decided not to purchase one of those EXPENSIVE writing programs, and use several books instead. Can you suggest others? I have: The Lively Art of Writing Elements of Style On Writing Well Thanks for your experienced help! :D
  17. OK, so a major educational objective for me for my 13yo in the next 6 months is to prepare her to write a solid essay. . . I plan for her to be in MCT Voyage level next year (starting Aug/Sept), but I'd like for her to have some basic essay skills before then, as I'd like her to be writing essays frequently next year. . . so I'd like her to have the basics down before fall so she can be refining skills next year while actually USING the essay form for literature, history, etc. . . Essay Voyage should be a great resource (she'll be doing Paragraph Town this spring), but that'll be 8 months
  18. I'm lesson planning and I am ignoring the computer, ClassEd email, TWTM, my blog, and my housework. Ha! So....has anyone made lesson plans for The Lively Art of Writing? How long does each chapter take? A day? 2 days? or.... If anyone has written this up and is willing to share, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!! Jean (off to do more lesson planning...)
  19. She is taking Humanities (lit and history) online this yr. I decided since we started school this week and she doesn't start with them until the 25th to have her read it over the 2 weeks. She is 1/2 way through and kept saying.....wow, this makes sense, this is easy, ok, I can do this. :) Just thought I'd share. It is inexpensive and an easy read. I used it with my oldest as a crash course refresher over about a month when he was a senior, and he didn't complain either. ;)
