  1. DC is taking the AP exams soon. The College Board website says the students should bring pens for the free-response questions. Has anyone tried using erasable ones? Also does the answer booklet come with wide ruled sheets? TIA
  2. My dd took the SAT in Jan and the ACT in Feb, to see which is better. For the SAT-Math, she said one needs to be cautious when a question seems too easy or difficult. She got 800 this yr :) It also seemed to have helped her ACT-Science when she simply noted the facts/experiments first, then read the questions before going back to the facts again. Her ACT-Science has improved from 33 to 35. Be encouraged, they are both doable!
  3. Got our paper report on Saturday too and saw it online on the same day. It was much earlier than what they mentioned on the ACT account. All the best!
  4. On the other hand... you didn't mention whether this is the first time your 9th grader is doing the AP exam. If it is not a 4 or 5, at least you can still cancel the score or not send it to a particular college. YMMV:) Joan
  5. Joan in Geneva, I guess you pretty much defined my problem :) I'm sure Kathy in Richmond is excellent and so is Derek Owens, but a personal tutor might be too much of an overkill in our situation :) Thanks anyway. Joan
  6. No, not graduating soon. Just our own schedule to meet :) I think DC has enough Math to handle Physics, but we haven't been able to devote our focus on it. An online class might force us to get it done? It seems that most folks over at the College Confidential forum suggest using Giancoli plus a prep book to study for the SATII and I figured even if we don't end up doing the SATII, at least DC can get some solid Physics out of Giancoli and if necessary, self-study for AP Physics B next year or the year after. Joan
  7. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199646 I know for sure UMissouri offers quite a number of asynchronous online classes. Joan
  8. Joan in Geneva: Thanks for sharing the link. We already bought Giancoli and DC is 1/3 through the book, so I don't think we should switch to a different one. Too bad Scholars Online doesn't start till September, otherwise it would be a perfect fit. Joan
  9. Really appreciate all the ideas so far. memphispeg: Free is great but I forgot to mention that we prefer outside accountability for this class. Sue in St Pete: I was really interested and checked out his website. Unfortunately, looks like he doesn't cover enough for SATII? http://www.derekowens.com/0910/faq.php#C5 We are running out of time to prep for the AP Physics B this year, but am hoping to try for the SATII. EKS: Keystone uses Giancoli for its AP Physics B. Any other suggestions? Thanks again. Joan
  10. Can someone recommend an online (perhaps honors but not AP) Physics class using the Giancoli textbook? TIA, Joan
  11. We had the same problem last year. Mine did not do PreCalc yet and we did notice that some Trig questions were missed, and yes, it was also a last minute discovery. Thankfully, DH was able to narrow down the topic and explain it to DC the night before the ACT. As a result, she did quite well on the Math section. However, if you have a child that is easily flustered, I would avoid doing what we did. All the best for tomorrow! Joan
  12. If your test center stays open, but you are unable to travel to the test center because of severe weather, call ACT Registration (319/337-1270) during the week after the test date for your options. http://www.actstudent.org/faq/answers/badweather.html
  13. This one at Amazon is dated October 5, 2010 and it comes with a CD http://www.amazon.com/Real-ACT-Prep-Guide-CD-Rom/dp/0768931401/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1291137669&sr=8-10 However, according to a reviewer the CD seems pretty useless. The 2010 version might be similar to the one dated December 3, 2007 http://www.amazon.com/Real-ACT-Prep-Guide-Include/dp/0768926750/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291138050&sr=8-1 Joan
  14. It didn't occur to me that SAT II subject tests would have the same policy as SAT. :) Thanks!
  15. What if a child takes the SATII (on any subject) before the 9th grade, will the result risk being expired at the College Board or ignored by colleges? TIA, Joan
  16. We borrowed ours from the library and considered them just as recreational materials. DD read them as and when she felt like it and I heard giggles from the bathroom :D . Retention was great last yr, when she finished the books. Don't really know whether she remembers any of them today, maybe I should borrow the books again. Joan
  17. According to the collegeboard, http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_rep.html Archived AP Scores Four years after your test date, your AP scores are removed from our active computer files and archived. AP Services must receive a signed and written request, and there is a charge of $25 each time they are sent to a college. Please complete the Archived AP Scores Request Form (.pdf/48KB) and mail or fax it to the address or number indicated. But I think one should probably ask the prospective college directly to find out whether they take scores that are older than 4 yrs.
  18. Do Hard Things by Alex & Brett Harris might help. It is a book written by a pair of teens for teenagers to rebel against low expectations.

  20. Here's the course recommendations at AoPS: Grades 7-10, mastery of basic algebra Students who have completed Algebra 1 in school or our Algebra 1 class are ready for our Introduction to Counting & Probability, Introduction to Number Theory, Algebra 2 and Introduction to Geometry classes. We recommend starting with the Counting & Probability and Number Theory classes. Of these four, Introduction to Geometry is the most advanced. http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/School/recommendations.php#g7up Joan
  21. Geometry is a good follow up before Precal. Lial does have Precal and it covers Trig as well. After Precal, one might want to pause and do SAT II for Math first before continuing with Calculus or AP Calculus. Joan
  22. http://www.onlinehighschool.org/Free...h_Schools.html might not be updated. I know for a fact that the schools mentioned in my state have either closed down or available for paying students only. Joan
