  1. We have that problem all the time with sports games. The ads during a hockey game are SO varied (grocery items, insurance, and now SCARY DRAMA with an ad that's definitely not PG). I'd love it if they could make the ads conform to the ratings of the show being aired.
  2. If you have Chipotle (mexican chain) you can also get salads. Then you'd need to skip the rice and beans, but you could get double meat, sour cream and cheese (and possibly salsa depending on your personal restrictions). The Chipotle locations here, though, don't do drive thru. You'd have to go in.
  3. I wonder about the source of the carbs in the salad. Is there a chance it's from things like tomatoes? I suppose it doesn't matter if you need to do low carb no matter what. DH does a food separating thing and we've had to read labels because sometimes something lists the grams of sugar in the nutrition facts, but it's not ADDED sugar, it's naturally occurring sugar. So, he can eat tomatoes, but not sweetened dressing.
  4. We have friends who live in a 2 story house. One of the bathrooms is on the backside of the house. Living in a housing development, their back yard backs to someone else's back yard (with a 7 foot cinderblock wall between the yards). At one point, the blinds broke in the bathroom and it took them a few days to get them replaced, but didn't worry about because who could see in?? Apparently, the back neighbors, if they sat in the right place, could. And they called the police (rather than just going over and saying "Dude. We can see your wife shower. Can you put up a sheet or something?") who then had to make an appearance and basically said "if they complain again, we could charge you with indecent exposure. they think you're doing it intentionally. hang up a sheet or something." So, be aware that dancing naked in front of your own windows COULD get you cited.
  5. Yep. I grew up in Upstate NY and went to college there. If it was actively snowing on the way to class, I might wear a wind breaker or my rain jacket. Otherwise, you just rushed and coped. It drives my grandmother nuts when I dress like that when we're there in the winter. I'll put my coat in the car, but I won't wear it for the 30 foot walk to the car from the front door. I hate riding in it, I won't want to wear it in the store or museum, so I have it in the car for "just in case." Same for the kids - I warm up the car a little (which I know is a no-no, but I did it especially when I had babies), and then I just get them in a car and throw a blanket over their laps. They're warm enough once the car gets going and they don't have to ride in a coat (which is less safe in general and torture for my sensory kid).
  6. Yes - Jack in the Box does breakfast all day (they do their whole menu all day, so you can get a burger at 9am, or a breakfast burrito at 8pm). I'd check out the contents online and make yourself a little list to keep in the glove box. Then you'd know that you want to order the "ABC breakfast burrito, no potatoes" or whatever. If you do the legwork ahead of time, you can make lists and then know what to order. I like that more and more places around here are doing actual brewed iced tea (rather than powder). That's a zero calorie, zero fake sugar drink :)
  7. "I understand that it's easier to be angry at ME than angry at yourself. You made choices that lead up to this point. Perhaps next time you'll make different choices." It's that whole "easier to be angry at someone else" bit that happens around here occasionally.
  8. I really enjoyed Coupling as well as Gavin and Stacey. Right now I'm watching Shameless but DH doesn't really like it, so I watch it alone. We watched the pilot of Psych last night. DH liked the premise (faking being psychic) and has found things he likes in the main characters. You could also try the original British version of The Office.
  9. I wonder if it was typed as "CAKK" or "CASK" or "CASL" (with the A and S being close as well as the K and L), and autocorrect turned it into CASK.
  10. http://www.brianpalmerdds.com/ - he has information on the benefits of breastfeeding. He also has a power point presentation and comments on the slides in case you want to share some information. Also, this article has research articles included (from professional journals, not just "folk wisdom") http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/lv/lvaprmayjun06p27.html
  11. I can remember doing it, and ahve done it with my kids. The waxed paper lining the box was enough to hold the milk for the time it took to eat the cereal (assuming you don't have long lingering eaters :) ). The Corn Pops always came in foil rather than waxed paper to keep them from going stale and sticking together (thank you, wikipedia ). I know they used to have slight perforation or dotted lines for cutting on some of the smaller boxes, but I don't know if they still do. Santa put one of the assorted packs in each kid's stocking this year (well, next to it). Santa's always looking for ways to help mom and dad sleep in a little.
  12. I see both "Gold" and "Silver" comics listed. Is there a way to know which stores will have what? Or do those labels mean something else?
  13. This post: followed by this post (I missed the quote) Made me kind of
  14. Yes! Here's the google doc: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277454&highlight=GHC+mediation
  15. http://www.thatmom.com/2011/06/03/ghc-and-ken-ham-continue-homeschool-civil-war-with-called-off-mediation/ This blog post includes the report. Of course, you have to trust that she copied it exactly, but I'm sure other people can vouch for it. I swear it was posted here.
  16. There's a problem because you can find links to some of Ham's blog posts (even without the WBM), but I couldn't find them via the archives. For example, I found this post (I forget the rabbit trail that got me there): http://blogs.answersingenesis.org/blogs/ken-ham/2011/03/15/another-compromiser-speaking-at-homeschool-conventions/ - it's dated March 15, 2011. However, when you click on the "archives" button on the left side of that same post, there are no listings for March. I had started with the archives figuring that I knew about when everything had happened, so I'd just go find those old posts.
  17. If you start here: http://thehappyhousewife.com/homeschool/ken-ham-uninvited/ (no affliation, she just turned up on a google search, and her links worked) and follow the links, you'll get to Ken Ham's FB note.
  18. I'm not savvy with it, but I wonder if you could use the Wayback Machine. You'd probably need Ham's blog address and possibly some search terms, and possibly more help than the vague ideas I've given you. But it may be possible to see those deleted blog posts again.
  19. I'm curious to know if the parents had any idea this was going to happen.
  20. A. there seems to be some discrepancy about the source of the tweet. is the 230am time correct? is the IP address correct? just like your employer can track your internet usage, so can your school, if you're using the school equipment. **your employer may also be able to read your emails and IMs from corporate sources - so mail from ME@MYEMPLOYER.COM is legally readable. However, mail that I send during company time thru another email portal, like ME@GMAIL.COM isn't because of an assumption of privacy - this came up in an NPR story recently** B. I completely understand the basic concept of a school being able to track tweets, especially if you have a public twitter account. it can be an excellent tool for tracking bullying or vandalism, etc. Because teens aren't always smart enough to know that tweeting "Super fantastic evening TPing My Local High School with my buds tonight!" is a bad idea.
  21. I hope things go smoothly for you. On the practical side, investigate the possibility of setting up a trust for the girls with the money. There may be tax advantages to that option. Another choice would be looking into some higher interest bearing accounts so that the money can work for them while it's sitting there.
  22. Definitely check with the insurance. I know we've had insurance policies where things are allowed once per calendar year. So, you could have a physical in December 2011 and then again in January 2012 = different calendar years. This sometimes has to do with how plans are written or how they're funded, etc. And, to don my Captain Obvious cape and hood for a moment, when you make that call to the insurance company, take notes on who you talk to, the date and the time. That way you can call the doctor's office and say, "I spoke with Donna at Massive Insurance Company this morning at 9:15am. She says we're allowed one physical per calendar year, and they'll cover the new one this week. It does NOT have to be a full 365 days or more between them." Be very specific with your questions to the insurance company.
  23. To homeschool in AZ, I had to file a letter of intent with my child's birth certificate (which they mailed back to me) at my county Board of Education. I agreed to teach my child certain subjects. Other than that, the county has no interest in what I'm doing unless I want to enroll my child in public school. It's possibly I'm also supposed to tell them if I move out of state, but I haven't looked. The "Joke" is that it's the Wild West out here ;), and that's why there are so few restrictions. The last time I looked, Arizona had the lowest per student spending on education in the country. I know lots of people don't think that "more money spent" = "better education," so YMMV. Here's a link to some educational statistics: http://www.arizonaeducationnetwork.com/2010/08/quick-facts-public-education-funding-in-arizona/ (the link is meant for AZ, but it has national statistics listed).
  24. This site is really handy: http://www.joyofbaking.com/PanSizes.html
  25. Long ago I had a friend tell me that when she chooses to not sit, she also raises the seat so that the seat stays dry for those who do sit. I now do that when I use a sketchy toilet.
