  1. I just got my first one a couple of months ago.... It wasn't too bad.... I had a fracture in my molar..... when I went back for my crown to be put on, my tooth was still hurting (about a week) so I was sent to see about a root canal.... I was just glad they didn't put the crown on and then figure out that I also needed a root canal.
  2. I check out multiple sites for reviews on curriculum.... having a college degree doesn't necessarily mean one can write good curriculum either.
  3. My doc had me cut them in half for the first week.... my son started with half of a 20mg. I did see that his personality changed.... I tried about 5 different med brands and each one had side effects. I was hoping that eventually I would find one without side effects.... never did. One thing I found was that if I exercise him in the morning before sitting down to do school work, he focus' much better. Read this article "Bike riding is my Ritalin" (link below). I think there might be a lot of truth to it. http://www.bicycling.com/news/featured-stories/riding-my-ritalin
  4. In Kindergarten the VP of the school called to suggest I put my son in a summer reading class, unfortunately we had summer plans so it was a no go... so she strongly suggested we hold him back although he had passed to first grade. I held him back...... I think this is a decision that I rushed into... I wish now that I would have given it more thought and made my decision when the school year started. At that time I had been thinking that he wasn't ready for 1st grade.... he has dyslexia and ADD.... without being able to read I feared it would be a horrible experience. I held him back and sadly he had a different teacher who was not understanding to his learning differences and made him feel so dumb and punished him for not getting his work done, .... he couldn't read the worksheets and she refused to read them to him..... after completing a second year in kindergarten, he could still not read and now his self esteem was at an all time low..... I still could not bring myself to put him in 1st grade not being able to read.....so I now homeschool him. I would not worry about his age at all.... like the others said there are many kids out there graduating at 19...... I would give more thought to other aspects..... like, how will he feel about repeating a grade? Did he pass all his classes? If so, he will be bored out of his mind. My son is also less mature than other kids..... he is now in 4th grade and I still see he is less mature, and that is with him being held back.... I have been using social skill workbooks that are geared toward ADD which has really helped. Wondering if you have you considered homeschooling him for one year? In Florida, while one is homeschooling a middle schooler or high schooler, parents can put them in a few classes and have them do sports.
  5. I have been using Barton with my two kids for 3 years.... While it is more expensive, I figure when I'm done with it, I can sell it, and get back some of what I spent on it. The first year we did Barton, my kids had a tutor..... that cost a whole lot more than doing it myself....... It is a wonderful program and has helped a lot. I do wish that I lived in Texas where the have an awesome program thru the Shriners for dyslexia.... it is a free program and you have to be willing to commit to 2 years with them...... I wish other Shriners from other states also offered this as it would be a great help.
  6. I have been using Barton Reading for 3 years with my son. He is profoundly dyslexic. One thing that has been great is that a friend told my about mixed eye dominance! He is right handed and should be right eye dominant. He is cross dominant! So, I bought him some "shooting glasses" in the hunting section and put scotch tape over his left eye to force his right eye to become stronger. It has helped tremendously! Barton has worked for us.....it is laid out very nicely and is easy to implement. I am also working on his fluency using Great Leaps. I highly recommend it!!!!
  7. dyslexia is genetic.... and comes in all variations...... from very mild to profound. I have two boys each at opposite ends..... I had one tested by a psychologist and the other tested for free thru our public school. Neither test really did much for my kids...... neither test clearly said YES it is dyslexia... I got the feeling no one wanted to say for certain and give them a label. I would love to know how to get a test that says he has dyslexia so he can get accommodations once he gets to college. Texas recognizes dyslexia and the schools test for it and then give services accordingly. I use Barton Reading and Spelling, whether or not my son has dyslexia, this program can be used to teach him how to be a great reader.... the program can help all students learn to read well. I have been using it for 3 years now and he has made great progress and he knows how to break words apart and figure out how to pronounce them.
  8. Decide where you want to go. Check out the different cruise lines and pick one. Either go thru them directly or a travel agency. you can try http://www.iwantacruise.com they will beat anyone else's price! We went on a Mediterranean cruise a few years back. We purchased our own plane tickets and enjoyed a few days in Rome before the cruise left the port. The cruise lines offer shuttles to and from the ship to the airport. Once on the ship you can sign up for shore tours or go it alone. We did both options depending on which port we were in. We had a fabulous time!!!!
  9. I'm thinking about getting an iPad 2. Have you found many good apps that are educational? Please share your favorites.:001_smile:
  10. If you used pay pal, and you haven't heard back or received the item.... contact them and have them resolve it. It must be done within a certain amount of time..... you might be past the time....but I'd go ahead and file with them and at least let them know.
  11. I have two dyslexic kids, one mild and one profound. I used Barton Reading and Spelling with them. My mild child has only finished book 4 and while it would be great to finish it, he is reading 8th grade books. My profound has a harder time with it all....but is making great strides. We also use Great Leaps for fluency. I have a friend who uses All About Spelling and is having lots of success with it. We use Teaching Textbooks for math and my kids are doing great with them. I have been doing my best to get them to switch from print to cursive writing which will help with all the backward letters. We use SOS for history and my son is able to highlight what he can't read and have the computer read it to him. I have also found that they are both mixed dominance and I have been working to get them aligned. They write with their right hand but they are left eye and ear dominant. I believe, getting them aligned will help with coordination. I've enjoyed reading all the posts!
  12. I wish I had started my kids in cursive. My kids have writing issues and writing in cursive would have fixed those problems, i.e. reversals, spacing. Cursive is taught first at some private schools I know. When I started teaching my kids cursive, they told me it was fun...... I guess all the curves are a little more exciting. I really wish my kids would have learned cursive first!!!!
  13. I know it takes a little longer than 15 min. to play... around 30 min. plus or minus. I started my kids in a chess club at age 7. It has helped them learn to focus and is a great game for strategy!
  14. Thank you for sharing! It's great to see that she came around!!!
  15. cursive writing? I have been using Handwriting without Tears for 3 years... my son has made a huge improvement by learning cursive. He is profoundly dyslexic and dysgraphic. Learning to type is our next order of business. Have you tried SpellingCity.com ?

  17. I like this website for information on dyslexia. http://www.dys-add.com
  18. You can also view many of the Brain Gym exercises by searching Youtube for videos. I have found many wonderful videos on there that I was able to see the exercise performed so I could repeat it with my child.
  19. We have been using Vocabulary Cartoons. Sells at Amazon for about $10.00. It is great, my kids enjoy it... the book makes learning fun and they seem to remember many of the words. http://www.vocabularycartoons.com It is based on SAT words.
  20. I have heard many wonderful things and seen many great reviews about the program "All About Spelling". You might want to consider that. I have a DS and we use Barton Reading and Spelling. It is expensive but has been wonderful!!! Maybe someone could post their thoughts on All About Spelling.
  21. I am wondering why she dislikes reading so much. As a mom with 2 struggling readers, after discovering they had learning disabilities, I was able to help them with their reading. One of my kids is now a total bookworm, the other child is still a work in progress. I would look at why she dislikes it so much, could it be that she has very very mild dyslexia, just a thought.... I would find her interests and get a book based on what she is most interested in learning... often it is just subject matter that is uninteresting causing one not to be interested in getting into the book.
  22. my son was 5, he was in a private christian school. It was about after the first 6 weeks I realized his teacher didn't like him..... he found himself in the office 5 times that year.... I asked him "Do you want to stay in that class or move to a different one?" He said, "Stay, because I like my friends". So I left him there to complete the school year. My biggest regret was to listen to him!!!! After that year, I put him in public school.... a couple of months into it he said to me out of nowhere "Mom, I'm really not a bad kid." I said "where did that come from", and he replied "because last year my teacher was always sending me to the office and I haven't been once this year." I wish I had not listened to him!!!! After 2 years in PS, I decided to homeschool...... because he was being bullied and the school was ignoring it. I am thankful for the first experience because I had always told myself that if I didn't like what was going on at his school, he wouldn't stay.... and I'm so thankful that I kept up my end. Happily Homeschooling for 3 years!
  23. I haven't tried the program "All About Spelling" but it looks great. It teaches all the spelling rules. I have Spelling Power and it doesn't seem to layout the spelling rules very well. It is a great resource for spelling lists and placement.
  24. I had heard the same thing.... so I bought NEW 6th grade for him as he is in 5th grade..... it was difficult for him after about the 5th lesson. So the program is sitting and waiting for him to start 6th grade.
