  1. We have been using the left hand to make a "b" (thumb points up and fingers make fist) and to check before he tries to say the word. He checks every time he comes to a "b" or "d". I will also be checking out all the other great suggestions! Thanks!!!
  2. Good Reads Making the Words Stand Still by Donald E. Lyman (out of print but I bought it used from thrifybooks.com for about 8.00 How to Reach and Teach Children and Teens with Dyslexia by Cynthia Stowe But, one of the most helpful things has been to watch a series of videos by Stephen Cannell. He talks about his challenges as a child and what he did to "make it". Sadly he passed away last year. http://www.cannell.com click on the purple box labeled "DYSLEXIA" My son is profoundly dyslexic and we have been using Barton Reading and Spelling for 3 years....it has helped tremendously.
  3. I have two dysgraphic boys and writing has been a big issue for us. I am always looking for ideas and curriculum to try with them. The ONLY thing I found on the web when I googled "dysgraphia writing" was a writing game called "Legend of Druidawn". I could not find any reviews of it! I figured for 40.00 how could I go wrong. I was trying everything! Well....... they love it! and beg to play it! It was a little confusing at first on how it is played. But once we got it figured out, they always want to play it! This school year we took it to the next level and this week we had our first club meeting with 5 boys! All their mom's wrote me within hours of leaving the club meeting saying great things. "You really put the spark back into writing" "I've tried to make writing fun and never been successful at it. Thank you for making writing fun". I just wish the publisher would come out with the next game.
  4. Teachers really should be mindful of what they say to a child! What they say to a child could be written on their slate of who they are to become! She should have never said this to any child at any time for any reason! She should have listened to him and then helped him with reading it. As a teacher, it is her duty/job to teach him and get him help. Shame on her! I do believe positive comes with mistakes we all make in life and I hope she learned a few lessons that can be a positive thing for future students.
  5. I would consider it "school" reading. I like to have my kids read one book at a time. When he finishes continue to the other two. Reading is good for the mind and exercises it no matter if it is "fun" reading or "school" reading.
  6. Hi There! I'm new here to going online and looking for answers myself for my profoundly dyslexic son who is age 9 and still can not read. I feel your pain and can totally relate!!! I feel so behind and I feel that their is no help for him. My PS told me that they didn't recognize dyslexia, so I'm homeschooling. I feel my kids learn from hearing and I am looking at buying Teaching Textbooks Math for them. The CD's only. My son is NOT into workbooks as the poor little guy can't read what they are asking of him. I've been using Rightstart Math and it is very scripted and very good! He has done really well with it, however between that and all the other subjects it was a lot of one on one. This school year so far we have not started Math, as I am totally focused on getting him reading. I've also heard that Saxon Math is great.
  7. I have been looking at buying Spelling Power. It's around 60.00 new. I haven't tried it, but it looks good. I have been using Susan Barton with my son. He is profoundly dyslexic and is dysgraphic as well. We use Handwriting Without Tears for learning cursive which takes away some of the remembering of which direction a letter goes. I've heard Analytical Grammar is a good program. I would love feedback on that if anyone has tried it. I always ask my son "what does every sentence begin with and end with?" After asking this for two years when he writes sentences, I still find my self asking him this question! He's 9.
  8. We are using Susan Barton. It does have a great resale value! However, I highly recommend purchasing it directly from SB. If you have ANY questions she will get on the phone herself and speak with you! As I found out when I had a question about how I was doing with her program. I was very impressed that she spoke to me directly! Also, if you have any questions you can email her and she will email you directly! Dyslexia affects so many other areas of learning..... as my son struggles to get ideas to paper. And his writing needs help.....she recommended Student Writing Intensive. I to see that my son struggles with remembering all the rules...so we made flash cards with the rule on them and examples of words on more index cards. We go over those quite often and that seems to help.
  9. Also, I've heard great things about this pen, especially for college students! http://www.livescribe.com/en-us/
  10. With your diagnosis you qualify for this service. They have a lot of textbooks and books on recording. Great Resource! http://www.rfbd.org/alt/ Often my child has trouble sounding out new words....just found a great way to hear any word.... http://www.howjsay.com I've never used Dragon Speech Recognition, I wonder if it works..... feedback anyone? I haven't seen great reviews.
  11. It's illegal! You can go to jail. It can lead to more and other dangerous drug use. The pusher will be pushing for something they can get you hooked on, like meth! Nothing good can come of it!!!!
