  1. I just asked my eye dr. this question this past week. His answer was if the child has no eye issues every two years is acceptable. Sometimes longer if they don't complain of any sight problems. But if the child wears glasses or has an issue, the child should have an exam every year because children's eyes change so quickly.
  2. I also find the tests ask questions that were not really "important" during the text. At least it wasn't something I would have high lighted during reading or chapter discussion unless I knew it was on the test. I've learned with these tests, to read the test first and use it as a guide for our discussions/writing portion. I don't lead them per se but I do try to re-emphasize and highlight those things that were obscure, yet on the test.
  3. This is my first year, which I'm sure I've said in every post I've written. We are almost finished our second month of school. I feel like we are progressing okay but about once a week, I get a twinge of "am I doing enough?". "Is this okay?" I feel this way especially for my two older kids. So here are my curriculum choices: DS, 12yo - struggles in math, LOATHES reading with a purple passion Math Mammoth, working on 4A (almost finished) Growing with Grammar 6 Pathway Reader with Workbook, Level 6 Soaring with Spelling/Vocab (we were doing Spelling workout but after reading the thread ab this we revisited and he chose to go back to this book so we are giving it another try) WWE 3 DD, 10 yo - struggles in math, LOVES to read, reads constantly Math Mammoth, working on 3A (almost finished) Growing with Grammar 5 Pathway Reader with workbook, level 5 Soaring with Spelling/Vocab (she ditched Spelling workout as well) WWE 3 DD, 8 yo - Loves math, tolerates reading Math Mammoth, working on 2A, Funbrain for drills Growing with Grammar 3 Pathway Reader with workbook, level 3 Spelling Workout B Cursive practice WWE 1 Together we do: Caught Ya Grammar everyday twice a week SOTW 1 twice a week RS4K pre-chemistry (we're almost done and will be starting elemental science) 1 x a month health Art lessons once a week The older kids also do Mindbenders twice a week with their dad and their dad also does music with them. Okay typing all that out - it seems right...but I think I have these nagging feelings about teaching SOTW 1 to a 5th/6th grader? teaching low level chem to 5th/6th grader? I don't do read alouds (yet). I don't do a foreign language AND I can't seem to get my children to READ enough. I read to my younger children (8 yo, 10 and 4 yo) every night before bed. This doesn't feel like "read aloud" books because they are books like level 2 readers, little scholastic readers, etc.
  4. I'm not really sure what happened but I think I can guess. You are definitely in my prayers, thoughts.. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  5. Thank you so much for this post!!!! I'm so glad I kept reading so far into the threads!!! I have a 12 yo who I think is yearning for independence. Now to get myself organized enough to make this happen!
  6. I did transcription from home for about 5 years. I worked for a company called cybersecretaries. I think they've changed their name in case it comes as something else. You do need a foot pedal and to download transcribing software. You also need to have relatively fast typing speed. Good luck to your friend.
  7. I was hypothyroid after every single one of my babies and am once again hypothyroid, probably forever now. As a previous poster stated - meds changed my life!! All of sudden, I felt SO MUCH better!! Last month, my scrip ran out and I was too busy or just forgot to refill it and omgoodness I felt TERRIBLE, terrible doesn't even describe it. But two days back on and I was a new woman!! Good luck and take care of yourself!
  8. my 10 yo decided in January she wanted to be vegetarian for no real reason. although as time has gone on, she has decided she doesn't want to hurt the poor animals. I had no idea she could give up chicken nuggets. Anyway, I do cook separate meals for her. Or at least a veggie version for her. I buy all the meat substitutes. All of my kids actually like the meat subs and sometimes, we do that alone. But whatever I'm cooking, I just do a smaller version of the same meal with the veggie meat sub. We like Morningstar brand. We also do a lot of non-meat meals too. She eats cheese and eggs so that's helpful. http://www.morningstarfarms.com/ I find my local grocery has more options in the veggie/organic type food department than say when I grocery shop at walmart. She definitely eats much healthier now but it's definitely not without much effort on my part. But I see it as her way of expressing her own identity and who I am to quash her self-expression. Good Luck!!
  9. I bought it but I admit that I have not used it at all. We didn't even get past the first lesson. I have three levels and they all started out with compound words and I was like wait what??? hmmmm....i did not like that at all. I know that GWG is very much that what's in level 1 is the same that is in level 6 but on a more complex level but I didn't feel like spelling should be that way. I can flip through it some more and give you a little more feedback on what's in the rest of it if you'd like. I have levels 3, 5 and 6. So we ditched it and I didn't do any spelling for a few weeks and then went with spelling workout but I may go back to it because I have it at some point but my kids NEED the phonics that spelling workout provides.
  10. I bought the download and brought it office depot and had the books made (for three children) and the books came out to be about $25 a piece. I had them done in both b/w and color.
  11. Thank you for posting about the classic/shakespeare worktexts!! Rainbow is soooo huge!! there's no way to go through it all and know what is there. I swear I have the hugest wish list and I've already placed TWO orders!!!! One of my daughters ADORES shakespeare. I think I'll be ordering the shakespeare worktexts. HMMM, I wonder if my husband would mind another Rainbow order
  12. One of my daughters decided to eat vegetarian in January. We thought it would be a phase since she's ten and hates vegetables really. Well, she eats eggs and dairy so she's a lacto-ovo vegetarian I believe it's called. 9 months later, she's still sticking to it. So now when I cook, I make a vegetarian version of almost everything. There's all these replacements. In addition, my meat eating husband who used to swear by meat at every meal, eats plenty of non-meat dinners so I don't end up cooking two meals EVERY night. But most nights I cook two meals. For my picky eaters, which I have two, they have to at least try the food if it's new or semi-new still. We call it a no-thank you bite. To their own surprise, they sometimes love my cooking . But if not, they can have cereal or pb&j. I'm a pretty picky eater and hate being forced to eat something I don't like. I would never do that to my own children. Having been forced to do that as a child, I would never do that to my own children.
  13. I saw some others out there from Houma and the surrounding area - I'm down here in Bayou too!! Are the houma momma's on here part of the IRL homeschool group??
  14. My 7 yo dd recently hooked up with a penpal through the WTM Board and it has been a wonderful experience and now my 10 yo dd and 12 yo ds are jealous!! They want a penpal too!! I would really love to hook them up with someone!! PM if anyone is interested!!
  15. http://www.cosmeo.com is free and it has links to each state's standards
  16. Jewish custom says that touching a dead body makes you unclean so it you don't touch the body of the dead, whether its your mother, brother, son, etc. This is related to particular commandments found in the Torah. As far as the burying of the body, it is also custom that a person be buried before sundown of the next day - the next day starts at sundown as Judaism follows the lunar calendar. HTH :)
  17. my daughter recently had her fb account deleted with this exact same reason. I emailed fb through her email address b/c it has to come from the account email that was deleted. I stated that she did not have a high school listed so I had no idea why she would be deleted over this issue. I wrote some other stuff going through the Terms of Use policy and how she had not violated any of them, asked for her page to reinstated. They emailed back stating her page had been accidentally deleted and her page was reactivated. My daughter does not homeschool with the rest of us. She is ps..but does not have a school associated with her account just as a sidenote. ETA: you can go into the contact facebook at the bottom of the login page to get the place where you find the email address to email over a disabled account or what I did was login to my account and get the address. But I'm sure you can Google it as well.
  18. Thanks so much! My 8 yo is WELL below her "grade level" and that has been MY biggest adjustment since beginning to homeschool this year. Getting past this idea that she is this grade or that grade. And just working with HER. Her writing skills are very basic. My other kids are good basic writers and with tons of prodding they could be SO much better. I'm off to add the complete writer to my rainbow wish list, as i prepare a new order. Thanks y'all :)
  19. This is my first year homeschooling and so take that fwiw... But I only use MM for all three of my kids, we do also do some math games, online math stuff and drills with flashcards but I don't have math loving kids and the math we do is like pulling teeth.
  20. wow that's great! i know my husband could make that!!!! Thanks for sharing it! I too have five kids (one is no longer at home) and I know this could work here and boy could i use the help!
  21. I tried Writing Strands and I just don't like it. My kids all found it rather boring and didn't really get the point. I'd like to get WWE for all of them. Should she just start at WWE1? What ab for my 12 you and 10 yo dc? Thanks,
