  1. :iagree: I had mine about 3 years ago but agree with everything else she said - and I also thank my dr. everytime i see her :)
  2. personally i feel like she is guilty - even she did not personally kill her child - she was responsible to her child. she was her mother. if my child were missing as she claimed for a day even, i would not be out partying, getting tattoos, etc, etc - I would be doing all in my power to find my child. the only tears that woman shed were for herself. to be not even found guilty of negligence is disgusting imo. mothers and fathers are found guilty and have their children removed for A LOT LESS than this every day. while this jury may not have been able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt for murder 1 - to not even be able to find guilt of negligence... I find this appalling.
  3. I went to public school and took my first year of a foreign language and some other h.s. class in middle school and received h.s. credit for it. So I wouldn't see why if in 8th grade in hs. they are ready for h.s. level courses we can't give them to them and they receive credit.
  4. what a terrible situation for your son! Personally if it were my child, I would say no about the boys playing together again. It would seem that the boy is destructive and genuinely mean. He had no remorse for breaking your son's things or then throwing him under the bus. At 10 you can take responsibility for your own behavior and say, hey we both messed up. Let's shake it off and be friends again. He just let your kid get hammered. YUCK!!!! This is a good time to teach your son about toxic ppl and how to spot and avoid them!!
  5. In Progressive Composition they do picture study, letter writing, some original composition, dictation, copywork - it's all very beautiful and gentle in its approach. I haven't been able to find anything pre-3rd year (let me know if you do!!) But my kids really seem to like - it doesn't seem so redundant.
  6. I'm attempting to shoestring budget for my 5 this year - our plan looks something like this - I have a planned reading list for each kid and I will find these books at the Library, goodwill, sales, etc (I love to buy books :) ) will do narrations and the occasional free study guide I find online. Grammar and Writing: vintage books: Maxwell and Serl (i.e. Progressive Composition and PLL and ILL) Elemental Science; SOTW EIL: Intro to Lit (for my highschooler) along with vintage grammar and writing. We use YourTeacher.com for math, my subscription runs out in Feb and I will renew b/c I think this is worth the money. We will supplement with work from books from here - http://www.ck12.org/flexbook/ I bought Roots and Fruits last year and I'm going to finally figure out how to use it correctly this year. I bought the whole MM 1-6 last year so I have that. I have LOF Fractions through Pre-algebra. I downloaded Funnix Phonics and Math when it was Free; I also have other vintage books for spelling (All American Speller), phonics (Word Mastery); I'm buying a lot of used books from classified boards and sale/swap get together with my local groups especially for my high school. So that's my basic plan.
  7. i just found a table on some school furniture site and emailed it to my husband b/c I want it to be his next project. He actually built our dining room table :) It's great having a handy husband!! I love your table!! I can't wait to see the rest of your pieces!! :D
  8. my ds 5 uses and loves it. He even asks to play on it. My dd 8 uses and altho it probably is a bit below her, she really loves it too. Never too much phonics reinforcement right. Our subscription is about to run out and we will renew.
  9. it really frustrates me that the police refuse to take cases like this seriously!! if it were a man harrassing a woman in such a way they would be all over it!! phone harrassment and the behavior she is exhibiting would allow for a restraining order if the situation were reversed - man harrassing a woman! It's situations like these that allow woman to believe that they can be abusers. I would really force the police to stand up and take notice, even if it means taking the phone records and phone recordings and copies of harrassing txt messages personally in to the police station maybe they are confused ab what constitutes harrassment: ha·rass·ment [ hérrəsmənt ] threatening or tormenting behavior: behavior that threatens or torments somebody, especially persistently http://definitions.uslegal.com/h/harassment/ Harassment in the second degree is a violation. S 240.30 Aggravated harassment in the second degree. A person is guilty of aggravated harassment in the second degree when, with intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm another person, he or she: Either (a) communicates with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, or by telegraph, mail or any other form of written communication, in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm; or (b) causes a communication to be initiated by mechanical or electronic means or otherwise with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, or by telegraph, mail or any other form of written communication, in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm; or Makes a telephone call, whether or not a conversation ensues, with no purpose of legitimate communication; or Strikes, shoves, kicks, or otherwise subjects another person to physical contact, or attempts or threatens to do the same because of a belief or perception regarding such person`s race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation, regardless of whether the belief or perception is correct; or Commits the crime of harassment in the first degree and has previously been convicted of the crime of harassment in the first degree as defined by section 240.25 of this article within the preceding ten years. Aggravated harassment in the second degree is a class A misdemeanor. I would take this down to the police station with me and refuse to leave without them putting a restraining order against her. Why should she be allowed to believe that this behavior is not only acceptable but unstoppable!! :glare:
  10. Does anyone have an opinion of these books? Are they good for use in our literature rotation? They sell them at Target on the dollar aisle. I have about 10 of them - ranging from A Picture of Dorian Gray to A Wrinkle in Time to Anne of Green Gables. Thanks
  11. could you tell me what you did for around the world in 80 days?? I've heard this mentioned several times as a way to do geography but I could use a little guidance I guess...
  12. I remember coming across those for the first time and thinking wth?? haha here are some examples b/c i can't remember where she originally shows it: so I googled it from her web site: http://letsplaymath.net/2007/10/02/pre-algebra-problem-solving-3rd-grade/ http://www.homeschoolmath.net/newsletter/volume53-may-2011.htm scroll down the page for this one also - i looked up the TOC for 4A and it says word problems and bar diagrams on pg 27 :D HTH
  13. no - i have not been brave enough to attempt it. we are planning to start learnables french since that's my high schoolers foreign language elective BUT they are actually asking to do Latin but I just don't even know where to begin with it. I'd want something so EASY and open and GO. I haven't even honestly researched it a whole lot.:001_unsure:
  14. absolutely :) I guess that would have been smart School Composition Progressive Composition (this is the 7 and 8th year book but they have one for 3 and 4th year and 5 and 6th year) I have 3 and 4th year saved on my computer but I can't find it in google books now. :glare: Higher Lessons in English Intermediate Language Lessons First Book in English (I realize I wrote the names of the younger kids grammar lessons incorrectly but this is the correct book titles) Webster's All American Speller my older children need a lot of phonics remedial work and I think this might be the best way to go. Word Mastery - I'll also be using this for phonics Thanks :D
  15. my son loves LOF and after we finish MM 6 and finish up LOF Decimals this year we'll do LOF pre-algebra. As a side note, we use YourTeacher.com for my dd pre-algebra and will be using for Algebra 1. It is the first time my daughter has actually 1. not complained about doing math and two been able to explain to me the math concepts she's learning about. Although it does not have a lot of review and so we'll be doing some extra work from other sources to be sure she is having retention. I will be using YourTeacher.com for my son and other children as well. My daughter who prefers not do school work on the computer really, really loves it. So we're sticking with it. eta: wow - this was horrible grammar - i need more coffee.....
  16. Year 2 of homeschooling :) which means we all survived Year 1 :tongue_smilie: Could I get some feedback from the wise Hive on my plans for next year. I'm a little cash strapped so I'm trying to use as many free resources as possible.... We live in cajun country and I would love for all my kids to speak french :D Any feedback. I think I feel really good about this plan. And I've got several book lists compiled both aligning with our history lessons, science lessons and just in general. I'm wondering if I'll ever feel confident homeschooling. Maybe when I plan Year 3??? TIA
  17. Thank you for the suggestions. We really LOVE science in this house. Though none of us are especially sciencey - so what we really need is something that gives us direction and is fun but also has the backbone we need. While Elemental Science is Wonderful, I just felt like they never really learned enough.
  18. For Interactive Science do you buy all the books? Or just the txtbook, activity book and tm? It looks like a great science program. I have a 9 yo, 11 and 13 yo that I'm trying to combine science for next year and I think I could use this? What do you think from your previous experience with it? We used elemental science last year. Next year will be our 2nd year of hs'ing.
  19. Do you mind if I print your post and put it in the front of my planner for next year so I remember to breathe and enjoy the learning process with my children??? :grouphug:
  20. we homeschool b/c we live in a place where the schools are just terrible. My kids were just doing terrible (at least imo) and I knew that they deserved better; with some one on one they could catch up and really learn. Not just learn to pass tests. I want my kids to love to learn - Explore the areas that interest them and become the ppl that G-d wants them to be. I don't want them to be crushed by a school system that doesn't care ab them.
  21. I wish I could find curriculum that were faith based but not Jesus based.... I don't think these exist. We believe in G-d and would like to have a faith filled homeschool (we are not overly observant or religious) but I don't think such materials exist or if they do I'm not aware of them.
  22. we are using The Learnables French for my daughters high school french.
