  1. I would use R&S. We tried CLE for a couple of months while we stayed with my parents thinking it would be less teacher intensive, but I really didn't like it. I prefer the mastery approach of R&S. If you already have the book, try it for a week or two and see which one works better.
  2. Thank you. I did bring the meal and the family was so nice. I was super scared when I pulled up to a mini mansion in my old minivan, but I felt alot better when they were so kind about us bringing the meal. The new mom invited me (and all my girls) to her baby shower this Saturday which I thought was very nice. Anyways, I stopped in for about 10 minutes. They showed us pictures of the baby and told us what was going on with him. If you think about it and would like to pray for baby Matthew, I know they would be thankful.
  3. I am terrified now. I actually have to bring a meal tonight to a family I do not know very well. The baby was born very early and is still at the hospital. I was told to call ahead to make sure they will be home and what time works for them. I will be doing this in between bringing my son to hockey. I never know how long to visit either. Also, the first family I did this for it was their 8th child and so I knew how to cook for them, but this is a family of three and I am so scared to bring way too much food. Wish me luck!!!
  4. I would also just take the week off and enjoy whatever it is you have going on.
  5. I do not label my weekly schedule by the days of the week but instead use day 1, 2, 3, etc. I print a new weekly schedule when 5 days are done on the old list and count school days that way. I just printed my 7th weekly schedule for my kids, so we are officially on week 7 of school. So, to answer yout question, I would just do as many days as I could that week and then carry the list over until next week. It works for us ;) .
  6. You might want to try to get an entry level position in a doctor's office where they will train you to become a front office assistant (clerical) or a medical biller/coder. You do not need a school to train you in either. I was a medical biller for over 10 years before staying home to homeschool my children and we hired inexperienced people and trained them all the time.
  7. We are using Core 4(E) and my girls are loving it so far. I bought a 2001 IG and bought the first ten weeks of books used (and a couple we couldn't find we bought new). My 9 and 10 year old dds love the Story of the World books, but aren't really liking the Landmark book. I would find a cheap used IG just for the schedule if you can.
  8. I always say this about my son who has 5 sisters.
  9. You need to be with her the entire time you are schooling her. I think this is the lesson that took me the longest to learn. I just knew that my kids could do it on their own if they just tried harder. In my stubbornness I caused some endless school days for my now older kids. If you sit through school with her, her school day will be shorter and alot more productive. You will notice a huge attitude change when they feel like they can do it and then eventually you will be able to leave her for little bits of time. I still sit in the room the entire time my kids (14, 13, 12, 10, and 9) are schooling. They work independently in many subjects, but I still need to teach the new concept or get them started with their assignment for the day. Please, try to lose the mindset of 'she could do it if she really wanted to' and instead realize that she is really young still. Also, when you first start homeschooling you realize that you need to nip some behaviors that didn't seem so irritating when they were gone some of the day. Homeschooling helps you to get all your ducks in a row...if you like it or not. ;)
  10. My sister and I were just having this conversation yesterday. I think so much is just in us, and I also think birth order matters. I was the youngest and I was 'expected' to not be able to do much and for a long time I lived up to that. I now have six children and after spending lots of time with my sister and wanting her approval I am more like her than ever before. Hmmm...I think now I am confusing myself and not making a point..
  11. I also laughed out loud at the bra in your pocket comment. I would have to have my bra and contact lens case. I have stayed awake through many tornado warnings while we lived in Texas. I hope all goes well for you all. I am praying.
  12. I have the book that is for grades 3-12. I just found a level that seemed challenging, but not overwhelming and started each child there. I found my copy used for $15ppd.
  13. Well, we use Simply Spelling as our copy work and dictation. We love it. This is our second year using it for all of my kids. I use R&S spelling for them too, but not because I think Simply Spelling lacks anything. I combine the two because I like how they seem to work well together.
  14. If you go next to their post on the right hand side (of the post) an icon will be there. You can hide just that post or ignore them completely. I have ignored many people completely and now I do not know how to get them back...lol.
  15. I have R&S, MM, Key to (sister gave to me), Saxon (sister gave me this too), and Practical Mathematics. We have stuck with R&S for the long haul (except my son did Saxon the first year I hs him) and added MM as a supplement.
  16. My fourth grader is using: R&S for English WWE for writing R&S for Spelling Simply Spelling fo dictation/ copy work Sonlight for reading plus 1 chapter out of a book of her choice I also am a huge fan of R&S English. I think the retention is amazing.
  17. I know you hated R&S, but you said it worked. Have you thought to use the next level and focus on decimals, percents, and geometry.
  18. I would definately check with a recruiter. We recently talked to a recruiter, and we were told that the reason American School is considered Tier 2 is because you spend no time in a classroom and there is no direct teacher to student interaction. I would also do a traditional homeschool diploma, even if you wanted to use American School as outsourced classes on your transcript. We really like American School, but we were very disappointed about it being a Tier 2 school and the economy being as it is, they do not need to accept any tier 2 recruits. I wish I would've checked with a recruiter first, but I assumed that an accrediated program would be accepted.
