  1. Some news I tracked down on Twitter, summarized: --Homes being undermined at Edisto Beach --Orlando airport back up and running normal schedule --Blood donations needed in FL according to Gov Scott --Various curfews in SC counties --Garden City has suspended all emergency services --Satellite picture of lights out in FL
  2. This is one of my favorite books! It works better with historical context; have you read the circumstances of it's creation and publication? I like WWZ too, and I'm really not interested in zombie books at all. I think I enjoyed it mostly because of the format, with the retrospective interview viewpoint, sort of an autopsy of the eventual outcome.
  3. When I was growing up, a boy in a nearby neighborhood died that way. He was swept into a fast-moving water flow which went into a storm drain and his head was caught in the bar blocking the drain and he drowned. We were both 10 at the time so I didn't pay any attention to whether his parents knew he was out or not. My parents still live in the same house and when I go visit I still think of that boy every time I drive by that drain. :crying: And that wasn't even a hurricane!
  4. Note to those using the link I posted: The link inherently contains the time in it so it will be out of date when you click on it. Be sure to use the date option and slider at the bottom to get the latest. I'll add this to the original link as well.
  5. I know, it's a bit mesmerizing! Zooming in is useful and informative, zooming out is a Van Gogh painting.
  6. I'm sorry. This is just terrible. I'm with those who say you need to let the police know what's happening. Don't be silent about it, even if you decide to change your route. Speak up and let people know. :grouphug: from a fellow Muslim.
  7. Oh no! I'm so sorry. I would be very upset too. I agree with those saying to post some of the book titles. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  8. Here's a link which helpfully shows exactly where the eye is right now. While it's a bit nerve-wracking to look at, I thought some folks might want to get some exact info. It can be difficult to tell where things are just from radar or satellite. The slider can help with future predictions as well. :grouphug: ETA: If you wait a moment for the wind speeds to load, you can see the direction from which wind will be approaching your location. This may help you decide where to be in a building. Another ETA: The link inherently contains the time in it so it will be out of date when you click on it. Be sure to use the date option and slider at the bottom to get the latest.
  9. I'm praying. I'm sorry this is happening. Please let update us as you find out. :grouphug:
  10. Wow, that's a lot to deal with. Hopefully the school can provide more insight into what happened. And may the move come sooner rather than later. :grouphug:
  11. Just a reminder to get your affidavit filed if you are homeschooling independently without a charter cover. Deadline is 10/15. Link to the form Best instructions for filling it out (Yes, HSLDA has issues, but they also have the best step-by-step instructions that I've found for filling out this form.)
  12. We're on the West coast but I'm thinking of all of you who either live in the path of this storm, or have family there.
  13. I can't defend the comment, but I wonder if that person was of the "don't bother with spelling/cursive because spellcheck/typing is the wave of the future" opinion. Very random! That said, I have had so much trouble getting my kids to sing in rounds I may enroll them just for this.
  14. I didn't find The Elementals to be scary. My favorite part of the book was definitely the characters, and they are definitely characters. I love books set in the South. I'm looking forward to discussing with you after you get a chance to read it. I am old enough now to differentiate between the scariest book I ever read (Danielewski's House of Leaves) which is still not finished from last year's spooky read, and the book that actually scared me the most: King's It. House of Leaves is much more terrifying but I read It when I was younger and more impressionable, and it actually caused changes in my behavior for a decade. I stopped leaning down over sinks, I crossed the street to avoid storm drains, and I fled from clowns in general. (The last one has stayed with me, actually.)
  15. I would be interested in reading the original thread but I'm not seeing it. Would someone mind linking to it? TIA.
  16. I would let them know so they can do whatever needs to be done if they'd like their item returned with minimal hassle and no cost to you. I would also let them know if it happens again I would stop ordering from them because of this repeated extra step. I couldn't in good conscience keep it, and personally I am anti-evangelism so I would do it to either discourage them or hopefully end up on a "do not send extra materials" list if they included this item on purpose. ETA: I posted at the same time as your update!
  17. Yes, we don't do any planning, never have. As long as you don't expect to eat at Blue Bayou or get a great seat for Fantasmic (not running now, I don't think) you should be fine. When we're in the area we sometimes just drive over and spend the day with no plan at all. We do use the fast passes to help. Off-season is much easier.
  18. In addition to other ideas already mentioned, when I make a vegetarian dish I often add Better Than Bouillon's vegetable base for umami flavor. It's quite salty, so don't use too much and leave salt out of the recipe until you've added the base and tasted it. It's usually in the soup aisle and a little goes a long way. Soy sauce can also be used to substitute for salt in some dishes while adding more umami.
  19. Not exactly related, but when I need a laugh I watch on YouTube. It's a lot like rearing a child, but in feline form.
  20. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: I hope you'll be able to get some rest today or tonight. And more :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: for Tap as well.
  21. They seem reasonable to me. We are in a very high COL area and while my household is on the spendy side for food, my sibling's family sticks to this level of food spending with no problems and my very good friend feeds a family of 8 high quality food (protein, whole grains, dairy and veg/fruit) at every meal using the thrifty level. They don't eat out at all but for allergen reasons, which helps the budget too.
  22. I'm so sorry to hear the news about the search, and like everyone here, I too am hoping for a miracle. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  23. I have Safari 10.0 on OS X 10.10.5 and this doesn't happen to me. However this is my second Macbook Pro and while I don't remember the version numbers form the previous one, I bought it in 2007. It still didn't have the problem you're describing. That would drive me crazy. Maybe try a different trackpad setting for what gesture you use? It shouldn't make a difference in theory, but I would give it a try.
