  1. DD is much better. Thanks for the well wishes! I have found I can sometimes double my vote by studying deeply and early. Many years DH will be sent on a last-minute trip for work and running out of time, will ask me, "How are we voting on this proposition?" :sneaky2: Feel better and get some rest!
  2. Thanks for posting these! I picked a bad day to run out of likes.
  3. Islam has a similar idea. Highly paraphrased: Be your child's parent for the first 7 years, teacher for the next 7 years, and friend for the next 7 (and presumably after that.) It could be translated into play/parenting/character for the first 7 years of a child's life, education/logic for the ages 8-14, and mentorship/apprenticeship until ~21.
  4. The only book I finished last week was Homeschooling for Excellence. I started but did not finish Dreiser's An American Tragedy, which is turning out to be quite a compelling read. DD has a 103 fever and DH is out of town, so it's been mostly caretaking and read aloud here. That offer reminds me of the King George character in Hamilton, .
  5. Wow, what a bunch of jerks. I'm so sorry. Cutting contact was the best thing to do. There's something very wrong with these people. :grouphug:
  6. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" by Hall and Oates "Stuck With You" by Huey Lewis and the News "Mo Money Mo Problems" by Notorious B.I.G. "Jump" by Van Halen "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince (I might write in the purple banana at this point.) "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2 "Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood
  7. I'm hoping you have good intentions here and are aiming to encourage people to works towards a post-racial society. It's difficult for me when you use phrases such as "don't make an issue out of it" or "they don't seek attention" in your OP. If "Who inspires you?" = "Who is a person of a different skin color I get along with beyond racial boundaries and because of their humanity" then I could list many. So many. If you mean "Who do we know who is subject to racism but doesn't talk about it to you personally," and I think you probably do, then this question is offensive, at least to me.
  8. Yes, both kids (ages 12 and 8) play with them every day and have for years. I'm planning to buy another set plus some different shapes and the clear ones for windows.
  9. I really enjoyed that series as well, although it certainly became grim. I was surprised to find the main male actor is actually Swedish. He does a fantastic American West coast accent! I think the original show was Swedish as well.
  10. Glad you like it! Can you be more specific about what you're looking for more of? There is more at the link I posted: http://jdh.hamkins.org/category/math-for-kids/
  11. There are a lot of these global wealth calculators and this one happens to have NZ dollars. I'm not sure of the ages of your kids, but it may not resonate if they are too young. To what places have you travelled? It's much more eye opening to go to India than the UK, for example. I'm not talking about "poverty tourism" but just vacations. I spent significant portions of my childhood in a poor country because most of my relatives are there. It had a significant impact on my worldview.
  12. I thought folks here might like this Eulerian circuits activity by John David Hamkins. My kids loved it. Lots of thinking, but with coloring and low digits. He has a link to the uncolored pages here (pdf) to save you the time of reproducing all of it. His other "math for kids" materials are great too.
  13. As others said, there are huge problems with infrastructure and logistics, and while money helps, it takes a concerted effort, and concerted efforts are inherently political. Tell that to a hungry baby, though. And corruption. Always corruption. War doesn't just happen for geopolitical reasons. Someone is always profiting from the machine.
  14. I had the kids start doing basic logic puzzles on paper starting around 2nd grade. We progressed to various other puzzles like tanagrams and IQ Fit (don't like the name), sudoku, and a game I got at Lakeshore Learning with cards and discs and you have to arrange the discs logically. ("The green disc is between 2 orange discs and the purple is not on either end.") We also played Gridworks online but never got through all of the puzzles.
  15. "Eighty percent of Yemen is currently in need of humanitarian assistance, and 19 of the country’s 22 governorates have reached crisis levels of food insecurity, according to the Food Programme. Due to the closure of the airport in the capital city of Sanaa; Saudi-led coalition border blockades; and repeated bombings of farms, wells, and agriculture, food supplies have dwindled." 16. We have those in the hillsides of the bay area. It's an eco-friendly way to keep everything trimmed back, especially in the Oakland Hills, after the firestorm of '91. Lawrence Berkeley Lab's "Goats Gone Wild" video. Goats at Google
  17. DS is also using The Fallacy Detective. Election season has been educational and also...challenging. Fallacies, fallacies everywhere.
  18. Planks, although I am much more likely to advise someone to do them than I am to bust one out myself.
  19. You can probably find a house within an hour commute with room for an RV. With land, it's much more difficult. Almost everything close in is densely built, and if it's not, it's pricey. And the part of SJ you're commenting to matters as well, as you can have a one hour commute within the city if it's a long enough distance at rush hour. If you have a lot of hobby materials you'll probably have to declutter or become a whiz at storage. The good things: Great weather, lots of culture and great food, smart and innovative people who are pro-intellectual, and a booming economy.
  20. I felt the same way about The Sparrow. I loved it and it really touched my heart. I felt like I knew and loved those people personally. I read it a couple of years ago, only because someone here recommended it to me. If someone had described the plot and the theological angle to me ahead of time, it would have gone on my "definitely not for me" list.
  21. Can you start a new thread, then, instead of using OP's advice thread? Inserting it here has started all kinds of drama and you'll probably agree has not actually assisted the OP in his/her particular situation one iota.
  22. Not sure if you include Lord of the Rings in the classics he's already read. Gormenghast is one that managed to slow down my voracious 12 yo reader. :)
  23. I don't think anyone would disagree with this and I know you mean well. But what does it have to do with this thread, specifically? I think that's the problem people are having here. Can you quote a post or something which is offering neglect as a solution in this thread? If not, I think you should let it go.
  24. If you want her to buy wifi, then you'll have to go with the credit card. She'll have to be able to enter it onto a screen. As far as I can tell, most flight attendants are not allowed to handle cash anymore, even for small things like drinks and snacks where those are for sale.
  25. I would not buy the service for a 15yo. The minimum time between flights would depend on where and time of year. I would allow more time for winter at O'Hare, for example, than summer in Denver. 1.5-2.5 hours should be fine. A credit card would be useful as a backup, but not having one shouldn't stop her. She can always carry cash and have you call the airline if she needs something booked. I doubt any hotel would allow a 15 yo to stay there alone, and the airport is safer anyway. Bonus that you don't have to worry about her getting back from the hotel to the airport in time. She doesn't need wifi, just a book or a couple of magazines. Remind her to listen to announcements about gate changes and such, and have her double-check the gate when she gets to it by reading the board and/or talking to the desk. She'll be fine!
