  1. I started the geometry course, but didn't get far before he started discussing something called the golden ratio and it was a 20 minute lecture with all these Greek symbols and stuff. Yeah. Need to get more algebra in first, methinks. Or something :-P The stuff I have realized I never learned in the first place despite having plenty of math and two years of chemistry (more math) in high school amazes me.
  2. I will say that since they revamped the site I liked it even more. It did take a while for me to realize I should mostly ignore the learning dashboard in favor of following a particular course. Go to the learning dashboard every couple of days or so, but to use it as a math program or as a supplement to a particular course, you should log in, go to the upper left and select the drop down menu labeled "learn". Find the course you want there and progress through. They have neatly worked practice between the videos now making it easy to move through in order. I like it very much. By virtue of needing to get 5 in a row correct, a sharp student with an eye for detail will move through concepts faster than an average student or one who is in a hurry & being careless. This is the way it should be.
  3. My daughter has asked for a sheet of plywood. Didn't get it (yet). Maybe this year? How do you wrap that?! It all started when I gave her this book: http://www.amazon.com/Build-Inexpensive-Dollhouse-Dover-Woodworking/dp/0486234932/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381631943&sr=8-1&keywords=doll+house+plywood
  4. What were his food bowls and what did you switch to? Also, dogs can have claritin if benadryl does not help. They need more though, .5mg/kg once or twice daily.
  5. Maybe your family was not the only one who did not want her to dictate the whole thing and not give them any input. I would not feel bad. If all your texts were polite, it's unlikely she cancelled just because of you.
  6. I'm just am amateur photographer, but I hate shooting white. I can get a correct exposure, but it is much more difficult than necessary. If you look at the second of the two pics posted above (shot by a pro!) you'll see why. It reflects sunlight something awful and makes your subjects look like someone is shining a floodlight in their face. The first one looks good. It also looks like the photographer shot it on a very overcast day (lucky timing!).
  7. Our dogs get Taste of the Wild too. We get it at TSC (Tractor Supply Company). They were getting Dr. Gary's Best Breed, but with 2 good sized dogs, getting it from our groomer was stressing me out. She seems to keep odd hours lately. :-(
  8. No kidding. So many slightly above ordinary things are "epic" or "earthshaking" these days, it's all rather disappointing. :-/
  9. Nevermind the kilt, OR the bagpipes, have any of you eve tried to ride a unicycle?! It's very difficult. I'm impressed.
  10. True. I may have inferred unreasonableness when she said "he is acting more on momentary irritation than thoughtful intent."
  11. No, of course not. However, if I felt the need to speak up, there would have to be good reason. My husband, usually a rational person, has at times threatened to throw away everything a kid (about 6 at the time) owned, or even to get rid of a pet. Not over anything major either. I assume everyone's capable of over-reacting and being an @$$.
  12. I think it's more like the fresh ones around here can be pretty bad. My town of 3,000 has ONE grocery store worth going to--and the produce can be hit or miss. :-/
  13. Some brussel sprouts are better than others. Young tender ones are WAY better than larger ones. There is a frozen brand I really love (Pictsweet) even better than fresh. Of course, I live in the boonies. That affects produce available to me greatly. :-/
  14. Not the books actually written by Dr. Atkins during his lifetime--and I am referring to the books written before the line of products was released. Not what people do now. The processed food versions (which are really not meant to be a daily thing.) and other variations people come up with on their own are not "Atkins". Also, the processed food thing could be said about ANY diet. Vegan processed food exists, low fat processed food etc. Yet, when someone announces they are going vegan or low fat, no one says "Yeah, but what about all that processed food?".
  15. It's irritating. No real change except making things tiny. WHY?
  16. Also, pulling out of driveways etc. uphill when someone pulls up behind you practically under your bumper. I can manage to drive ahead without hitting them, but it's almost fun to scare them a bit first (roll back just a little...).
  17. Impalas are pretty good cars. We will probably be getting something for our 19 year old to drive soon, and an Impala is a contender. My mom has owned two (one of which my niece is now driving). I've driven it and have no complaints other than the fact that in comparison to my Traverse, it's quite low to the ground. They get fantastic gas mileage.
  18. Love my Chevy Traverse. I'm going to have to get running boards on it soon though as my mom can barely get into it.
  19. I read it as she did not have a program capable of opening raw. Just about anything (other than maybe full photoshop) is so very easy to use these days it's faster to learn than much of the stuff we teach our kids. In Lightroom, there's a slider bar and you just move it from left to right. You can trial it free btw. I got it with an educator's discount for it and it was about... $60? Also, I'm amazed many times that I click one button (auto) and it's good enough. Occasionally it does bizarre things, but mostly it's a darn good program for newbies.
  20. I can adjust the white balance and exposure *after* taking pics in raw. That's just two (rather important!) things off the top of my head. Nothing I know of will let you do this with a jpeg file. (And if there is something affordable that does this, I really would like to know about it.) Yes, I know how to make correct exposures in the first place, but that does not necessarily happen in every single shot even for pros. I shoot manual in manual mode, and sometimes the light changes very quickly. It's nice knowing something can be just a little bit off and I can fix it in post instead of fiddling with the camera and missing the shot.
  21. Picasa also opens raw files-and it's pretty good too. If you are thinking of buying a program though, look at Lightroom. It's more user friendly (and WAY cheaper) than Photoshop, and more professional than Elements (another fun one). Lightroom has a lot of cool presets, like different looks of black and white etc.
  22. I am drinking Bacardi spiced rum tonight. With Pepsi as I do not have Coke. That's okay though--it was mostly rum and I could barely taste the Pepsi. That took a while to type. :-P
  23. :iagree: We have teens, homeschool dads, parents who afterschool (and go to ALL the boards--not just the afterschooling one)... Fortunately for them, they don't need every member's approval to be here.
  24. This is when you say "You do realize I am not your nanny, right?"
