  1. Could you do DE at a nearby university rather than a CC?
  2. I'll pick up some candy hearts for the kids this afternoon. Dh and I both have to work tomorrow morning. In the afternoon the kids and I will clean the house as we have company coming on Monday. We may take a break and watch Sherlock. :)
  3. Yes, we moved to our current town specifically for the flagship university and community college. We will be here another 8 years for the same reasons. Privately, my dh and I are counting down the years until we can move to an area where we would both much rather live.
  4. I would go with dual enrollment. You can get the AA in two years and remain a freshman for scholarship purposes. (At least in Florida.)
  5. Knowing we wouldn't be able to afford to send our four kids to college, we started homeschooling with the intent to send all of our kids to college between ninth and eleventh grade; college credits being free to high school students in Florida. Then we intentionally moved to a city that offered both a community college and a university right before our eldest started ninth grade. Giving them as much free college as possible and encouraging them to stay in the state university system which is very affordable is the best we can do. They will all need to pay for their own education after high school. We have agreed to cover books and school supplies - the best we can do. Dd 18 is graduating this May with 114 credits and plans to go to a state university. Dd 16 is planning to graduate high school with her AA, but then transfer out of state. Dd 12 is planning to go Ivy League so none of her college credits would transfer. Ds 10 is planning to get his AA while in high school and then go to a state university. So, our plans have had mixed results. :D
  6. Please say this isn't true!!! Frozen merchandise. I am so tired of Frozen Halloween merchandise, followed by lots and lots of Frozen Christmas merchandise, followed by Frozen Valentine's merchandise, and what is coming next??? Yes, more Frozen Easter merchandise. I obviously work in retail. My dislike of Olaf and Elsa actually raises my blood pressure.
  7. I don't know the different types of martial arts. Which include work with weapons? I have a daughter very into stage combat and she has heard that martial arts is a good choice to develop more all-around fighting skill. She isn't interested in any martial arts competitions and would like to work with weapons as much as possible. What form of martial arts should we be looking for?
  8. No, I am not a good cook. Everyone knows I am not a good cook. I have little to no interest in food or cooking. I cook because it is necessary.
  9. No, Florida does not give funds through charter schools. They do allow homeschoolers to take Florida Virtual School classes for free, enroll part time in public high schools (and sometimes middle schools,) and dual enroll at local community colleges and universities for free (other than the price of textbooks.)

  11. My dd takes two classes at the local high school. She takes two drama classes. There just isn't any way to replicate that at home. When I want her to go on a field trip we schedule it in the morning before her classes, otherwise she misses it. But, I still pull her for family events. She missed a week of school already this year to attend an out-of-state funeral. She only has to make arrangements with her teacher. The school doesn't care, as she is still a homeschooler and the school keeps no records for her beyond the grades she gets in these two classes. She is very happy attending high school. I have found it to be a good choice for her. She desired close friends that really shared her interests and wanted more (daily) theater/drama in her schedule than I could make happen any other way. We did/do have to have up-to-date immunization records. And we are required to send her high school transcript along with my homeschool transcript when she applies to colleges; so the grades, good or bad, do stay with the student even when the student remains a homeschooler.
  12. I have a daughter like this. She is in tenth grade and still finishing up prealgebra and is in the beginning of geometry. Over the next year and a half I hope to have her finish geometry and finish algebra 1. Next year she will start at the community college, without taking any math classes there her junior year. The summer before her senior year she will take Math Readiness at the CC and her senior year she will take Topics in Math and Contemporary Math, both classes for students that plan liberal arts majors and struggle with math. So her transcript will have 4.5 credits and read: Algebra 1 1.0 Geometry 1.0 Math Readiness 0.5 Topics in Math 1.0 Contemporary Math 1.0
  13. We have always gone with a combination of what is best for the student/what the student prefers to do. The daily driving and scheduling is the worst part. Bus passes are very helpful. And we keep a monthly calendar on the refrigerator that lists everywhere we need to be. I refer to it daily. My eldest started dual enrollment at the university in 9th grade. She was a full time dual enrollment student by 10th grade. She is in 12th this year and still a full time dual enrollment student. My second daughter chose to go to the local high school part time starting in 9th grade. She is in 10th now, still part time at the local high school. Next year she is leaning toward full time dual enrollment at the local community college while remaining part of the high school theater troupe. Now my third daughter is leaning toward full-time online school for high school. She is going to take 2/3 of her classes online next year (7th grade) and we'll see how that goes. And my son will remain homeschooled by me, at home, for the foreseeable future. It is a bit of a juggling act at times, but certainly doable. :)
  14. Around here they start at the (well regarded) community college that doesn't have any requirements and then transfer into the desired university.
  15. Any costume shop should have medieval dresses. We bought the one dd will be wearing to the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire at a Halloween Megastore. Most are open all year. We've been wanting to check out Make Believe Costumes in Jacksonville, but we don't get up that direction too often. Right now, we are trying to decide whether or not to go to Jo-Ann Fabrics and buy fabric for a cloak. The weather is supposed to be warmer, but it is hard to tell. It is certainly cold today. :)
  16. Do you normally do a teacher evaluation? Are you concerned the teacher will not understand and consider your dd's progress insufficient? You always have the option to do a psychologist evaluation instead. Or take a nationally normed test. State law does not require that the student be at any particular level. It only dictates that the student "demonstrate educational progress at a level commensurate with her or his ability." If you normally do the teacher assessment, I would find a teacher that will take your dd's medical issues into account when determining "her ability."
  17. Ours sends only a transcript of the classes taken at the high school. We are not students at the high school, but homeschoolers and the final (complete) transcript must be supplied by the parent. Neither will they supply a GPA, class rank, or forward ACT/SAT results.
  18. I don't know anything about the book myself, but this is the book used in a similar class at our local university. http://www.amazon.com/Borror-DeLongs-Introduction-Study-Insects/dp/0030968356/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451924048&sr=8-1&keywords=9780030968358#customerReviews
  19. I would give a full credit for the Algebra 2 even though she didn't finish the book. It happens all the time in high school and college. Many schools in Florida even split Algebra 1 up over two years and give two high school credits. And I would give a half credit for the personal finance because we are homeschoolers and can do things like that. I am giving my daughter a high school credit for the Prealgebra she took in 9th grade. I prefer that to two credits of Algebra I. I would choose a statistics or liberal arts math course to take second semester so she has 4 credits of math. That leaves the university door open to her in the future.
  20. My dd will be in 11th next year. She plans to dual enroll for most of her classes. Fall / Spring Comp I / Comp II (DE) Sign Language I / Sign Language II (DE) Intro to Theater / Intro to Stagecraft (DE) Acting Fundamentals / Acting I (DE) Astronomy / Geology (Teaching Company, etc.) Algebra II (MUS) Plus a long list of theatrical extracurriculars.
  21. We just finished planning my son's 5th grade classes. This is the first time he has bought in to the whole "education and learning" thing. It is a relief and so much easier to plan going forward when he has an opinion beyond "I don't want to do anything." :) Now on to planning dd's 7th grade year. 5th grade Saxon 65 Beast Academy 4 Oak Meadow 5 US History Connect the Thoughts Modern History CNN Student News Oak Meadow 5 Environmental Science Critical Thinking Science Detective Beginning Hake Grammar 5 Spelling Power Vocabu-Lit E Galore Park Junior English 3 Veritas Press Self Paced Greece, Rome and the New Testament Kolbe Elementary Literature Daily Free Reading Connect the Thoughts Animation II Connect the Thoughts Creative Writing II Foreign Language - still on the fence, may put away all materials until 7th grade 4-H Soccer Swim team Triathlon training
