  3. Slightly OT: Do you plan to have him read The Elements of Style? Another similar book, in a more workbook style, is Writing Skills Success in 20 Mins a Day (Learning Express).
  4. I like it. Just some minor editing needed. Johannes Kepler studied heliocentricism at his university in the 1590s. Some scientists of the time said that the sun was the center of the solar system and this was called they called this heliocentricism. Although most astronomers believed that the Earth was at the center of the solar system and this is called they called this geocentricism. (He uses scientists and astronomers interchangeably. Perhaps he should only use astronomers.) After his studies, Kepler worked as an assistant to Tycho Brahe. He assisted Brahe in studying the movement of the planets. They could not answer the question of why Mars seemed to move at different speeds. Before Brahe died in 1601, he asked Kepler to continue his work. Several years later, Kepler hypothesized that Mars' orbit must be an ellipse. He then put forth Kepler’s First Law of Planetary Motion which stated, “Planets move in elliptical orbits; the sun is one focal point.†He published his findings in Astronomia Nova in 1609.
  5. The 1977 animated Hobbit is available as a playlist.
  6. Look at Penny Gardner's Italics (available on CurrClick.com), or Getty-Dubay's Write Now. I've used both and they were helpful. ETA: See this thread for more suggestions.
  7. Write Now is my favourite handwriting book. It includes very explicit instruction on making strokes, forming each letter, and variations in shape, slope, size, spacing and speed to suit your personal comfort. It also shows modifications and alternative ways of writing some of the letters. The authors - Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay - conduct handwriting improvement workshops for doctors. The book includes several before/after handwriting samples of MDs and other adults, which might be helpful to older students who are remediating their handwriting.

  9. We are finishing Practice Island. I taught my dd about predicate nominative and predicate adjective while we were doing Grammar Island. Maybe you can introduce the concept, show a few examples and they might pick it up quickly.
  10. The snark was unnecessary. I guess I misunderstood the idea behind this thread. Have fun.
  11. You are going to get a skewed result because the members on these forums are more American than British.

  13. It's available on Archive.org as MP3 files: https://archive.org/details/NicolWilliamsonHobbit
  14. Here are the resources we are using: 1. How To Write A Paragraph from Brookdale House, followed by 2. Paragraph Writing Made Easy from Scholastic Both are very simple and easy to use. I will add that her writing will also improve if you add in a book that teaches sentence variety (such as Sentence Composing), and a book that improves vocabulary (such as Vocabulit or Sadlier Oxford Vocabulary Workshop.)
  15. This week I searched the forums for editing reccs and found this link to the free Glencoe language arts workbooks. The editing pages are towards the end of each grade's workbook. Does that help?
  16. So was he well prepared for high school writing with the foundation of WWS1 alone?
  17. For middle school books, look at lit guides from Scholastic or Saddleback Publishing. For high school books, look at Prestwick House, Glencoe or Folger's.
