  1. I know ow to get the answer but not sure if it is how Singapore teaches. Given in Problem: J + B = 193 and J - 47 = B So J + (J - 47) = 193 Add like terms 2J - 47 = 193 Add 47 from each side +47 +47 2J = 240 Divide each side by 2 2 2 J = 120 That give you originally J has 120 and B has 73 If J gives 15 to B then just subtract for new totals J now has 105 and B has 88 Giving J 17 more than B
  2. I realize buying parts used would be cheap but I just recalled someone posting a site that sold the books as a bundle. If I remember correctly the books were cheaper to buy as a bundle than individually.
  3. I am looking for the cheapest place to purchase Singapore math. I recall reading on the board awhile back that there was a company that sold the level as a bundle, but I can't seem to find it now.
  4. I taught DS how to do CM type narrations when we first started homeschooling. At the time, I wasn't even aware there was any other type of narration. I remember sitting and discussing the narrators job and bringing up examples. I guess we really concreted this type of narration because DS does an excellent job. In science, I never required narrating but would always ask questions on the subject to check that DS understood the content. Over the past year, I have started to require DS to answer in complete sentences per WTM. We started WWE this year and it is helping DS better understand WTM type narrations. I really like the combination of using both types of narration and see merit in each.
  5. I want to thank everyone for their input on this matter. After reading the responses I think we will be adding this. Hopefully I can sneak it in to our schedule without DS noticing yet another addition. :001_smile:
  6. I had to answer other. We have a lab who use to be an inside/outside dog, but he has slowly become an outside dog. He rarely want to be indoors. He has the barn he can sleep in outside but prefers sleeping on the picnic table. I don't understand why he wants to be out on a hard table rather then on his bed inside.
  7. Diagram a sentence? We use Shurley English which doesn't teach diagramming and I'm just wondering if I should be teaching this on the side. What are the benifits to knowing how to diagram a sentence?
  8. I'm not watching anything new this season. My favorites are Big Bang Theory (the guy reminds me of my brother) and Criminal Minds (although I do get scared easily.
  9. Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum has a section on this. It also shows curriculum that might work for children of that learning style. You can probably pick up a copy at your library.
  10. - I don't do read-alouds very often. We do a lot of audiobooks in the car and silent reading at home. - I don't cook from scratch. My favorite thing to make is reservations. I do try, but the truth is I'm not very good at it. - I work part-time but have always wanted to be a SAHM when I grew up. - I breastfed for two years. - My DS is vaccinated and circumcised. - My DH does the majority of the laundry. - I try to be submissive but I'm too darn opinionated. - I am against violence and won't even let my DS sin up for karate class. - I won't attend a church where there are women pastors, musical instruments, or dancing. Please don't bash me I'm just trying to be open. - I like other peoples children just not in my house. - I honestly just wish the election would be over so we could all move on.. - I tend to buy way too much clothes, but secretly I wish I didn't have to leave my house so I could live in my pajamas.
  11. I'm a treadmill walker and I do think my thighs in general are toned. I climb uphill and vary my speed, but I think it is working. I am definitely in better shape then when I took almost two years off of exercising.
  12. We do not have dessert with dinner. DH and I both grew up allowed to eat what we wanted, when we wanted, but that is not the case in our house today. DS is a little chubby and we want to set a good example for him on healthy eating habits. We have occasional treats but not every day.
  13. I advance my son to the next grade unofficially when the majority of the subject levels are at the next grade level. For instance, come spring time DS should have completed his spelling, english, math, and science books therefore I would start calling him a 5th grader. We school year round and just move on to the next thing once a book is complete. Why is it you DD feels the need to skip a grade level? Does she feel she is behind her peers or? Does she feel she already knows the information being taught? I think I would try and find out more why she feels she should skip a grade level and base my decision on this.
  14. We switched from Prima Latina to Latin for Children and they have great ideas to make Latin fun. We play Memory, matching Latin and English words, go fish doing the same, and we try and make sentences using the words we know. Also, Latin for Children has an online matching game that is free. I think your DD could easily play it using the words already learned with Prima Latina and look up in the book words that are new to her.
  15. DS just finished this series and loved it. We are getting him Inkdeath and Tales of Beedle Bard for sure. There have been so many books over the past year that have come out that it will be hard to choose.
  16. DH and DS both have Sony Cybershots that they like. I think the pictures turn out pretty good and you can usually find them on sale.
  17. Thank you both for the encouragement. I try to keep reminding myself my goal is to foster a love for learning rather than cram him with knowledge and him wind up hating school but I just don't want to fail him.
  18. Marie- I see you are using Shurley English. Are you using the writing portion in that? How are your children doing? I would say that if they are successfully doing the writing portion in that plus you are supplementing with writing in other subjects you are probably doing enough. We use Shurley English too, but the writing section was too much for my son, so we now skip it and use WWE. We are going through the entire book at an accelerated pace just as a review and to cement some of the things he was struggling with. After WWE I'm not sure what we will do. Either switch back to Shurley or go with another independent writing curriculum. DS and I really enjoy the simplicity of the WWE book and I don't think it is too basic. I guess it would really depend on your childrens writing level at this time though.
  19. In my heart I believe that my son is progressing along nicely but every once in a while I get this feeling that I am doing him a diservice by homeschooling. Although I excelled in school, I notice as I am teaching there is so much that I never learned. I have to study his lessons ahead of time to make sure I am able to answer questions. I find myself saying over and over, "Wow, I never knew that." I honestly don't have a problem letting my son know that I don't know the answer because I think it is beneficial to him to see how I go about finding them, but somedays I think he would excel SOOO much more if he had a teacher who knew what they were doing. When my son was in private school I was always told how gifted he was and how advanced he was for his grade level. At the time, I was able to see a difference between his education level and that of his peers, but I no longer see this. I am not the type of mom who pushes. I let DS move at his own steady pace and follow his passions. The only thing I know we are behind in is writing which we are steadily working on. I wonder if I should be doing more to help him advance to his full potential or continue to allow him to stay at a more relaxed pace as long as he continues to move forward. I've looked into EPGY courses but they seem a little dry from the little I was able to read. How do you know that you are doing "ENOUGH" for your child's education?? Do you base it off a book like, What Your... Grader Needs to Know or something like that??
  20. Thanks. I still haven't decided what I will do for science next year but we are definitely ready for a change.
  21. I work part-time on Friday and Saturday nights. We school Monday-Thursday full days and Fridays half days. On Fridays, I go over all of the lessons first and then DS does independent work. I usually try and take a nap from 12-4 before getting up to make dinner and get ready for work. If son does not understand something we go over it Saturday morning before I fall asleep. The schedule is hard on my body switching back and forth from day to night but it is neccesary for our family. DH's health is not great which makes it very hard if not impossible at times for him to work so we rely on my income. It was difficult for me switching to the provider role in the beginning but we all make sacrifices for our family. DS is VERY understanding and compassionate about our unique situation. Although DH would prefer to be the sole bread winner for our family, at this time it isn't possible. I think working and homeschooling can definitely be done, but you must be willing to make sacrifices.
  22. If I am having a discussion with someone else DS rarely interrupts. When he does I say, "Excuse me! I'm in the middle of a conversation right now and unless this is an emergency you are going to have to wait until we are done." Usually that's the end of it. He waits till we are finished or runs off to play and we chat later. I think part of the problem is the fact it is only the two of us here and he has a hard time switching from "Schooltime" and free time.
  23. I'm at $21.71. I did notice that my storage company is now a part of upromise which means another whopping dollar each month. Hmmm... I wonder which college I can afford with that. :D Oh well, when I signed up I figured anything extra is fine with me.
  24. Your family is in my prayers. I am glad the Drs. were able to catch your DH's cancer in the early stage. Are they planning on doing a PET scan prior to removing the kidney just to be certain the cancer is no where else? Cancer is such a scary thing as there is no one reason why one person gets it and another does not. You seem to be taking the news very well. Unfortunately, our family has also been touched by cancer and it has been a whirlwind of emotions. The most important thing I have learned over the years is never give up hope. I pray your husband has a safe surgery and an uneventful recovery.
  25. Thank you both so much for answering this. I really do want to keep school fun, but it seems like we are spending too much time trying to get through a lesson. I am going to implement theses ideas and hopefully we will have a smoother week. I know he is more than capable of staying on task because he has done it in the past. Praying and deep breathing to get me through this stage.
