  1. Which movie includes the scene on the street about the "Susquehanna Hat Company"? I was trying to describe it to my kids and it remains, in my mind, one of the funniest scenes I've ever viewed.
  2. Cardinal Classical Academy La Escuela de los Dos Gatos Acorn to Oak Academy
  3. We are on week 24 according to Biblioplan. But science is always lagging miserably behind by a couple of weeks. Math is almost finished for ds7, not sure what to do there. Maybe I'll start a new thread:)
  4. Initially, we homeschooled for academic reasons and concerns about overcrowded classrooms. Then it morphed into the desire to avoid indoctrinating our kids in secular humanism (the religion of public schools). Now it is simply a way of life. I love the free time we have. I love teaching. I think teaching is much more fun than parenting, but I guess I can't outsource that:rolleyes:!
  5. We like Piano Adventures by Faber. It is a series that starts kids off the staff but gets them onto it fairly quickly. They have theory books for each level as well.
  6. Couple of family quotes: "We're not stressed, we're blessed" When entering a public place during regular school hours the kids are asked, "Who do you represent?" The right answer is "God and homeschooling" Edmund Burke: "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" When the checkout lady at Target asks you if school is off today say "Nope, me and Bubba learns 'em at home, works real good!" ( I got that one off of some homeschool site)
  7. I think that is in the lyrics of a song by 4HIM.
  8. On Wednesdays I get to hang out with about ten other homeschool moms while our 5-9 yr. olds enjoy a gym class at the local community center for an hour. Usually the moms banter topics about, kind of like this board, but today I got the treat of discussing JFK assassination conspiracy theories with one of my friend's 12 yr. old. He seems to be very well versed in it!
  9. It sounds like you have really thought this through and you have explained your situation very well. Given that this year has been so successful academically, and spiritually maybe?, I would not be too quick to send them back to school, especially if they want to continue to be at home. Maybe God will provide some creative ways of meeting the need for "extras". You didn't mention how old your kids are but if they are old enough for volunteer opportunities at places where those kind of lessons (i.e. art, music, etc.) are given maybe you could have them work for tuition or a discount. We know a family who does that for karate lessons. They clean the studio after class (mom helps too). I tutor Somalis in English and I have a dd9 who is interested in languages so I take her along. Maybe there is another mom who wants to trade skills with you, like one who teaches piano in return for you watching her kids weekly. I have a friend who gives lessons instead of paying for childcare. Think of the things your family can bring to the table as an offering in return for the things you are looking for. There is also something to be said for a season of "going without" to grow thankfulness in all of us. By ensuring that our kids never know "want" we may be keeping them from a really valuable time of growth in the things of the Lord. Just some thoughts.:)
  10. Feed My Starving Children Volunteers pack food for starving kids. They also take financial donations. Food gets shipped all over the world so that kids no longer have to eat dirt in places like Haiti and North Korea. http://www.fmsc.org
  11. Looks great. I am going to check out the AIG stuff for my 5th next year too! Thanks for the info.
  12. We all watched it during break time this am. Very funny!:D
  13. My dd9 knits. I am fiber challenged. I am working on forming the minds of three children:).
  14. Just reading Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech makes me cry every time. Schindler's List is a tearjerker for sure, like Life is Beautiful.
  15. My MIL would've told me flat out she was not for it. I appreciate how you graciously went along with DIL's idea.
  16. One more thought. Don't know how you feel about prayer but if you are a praying family then it is a good time for your dd to be praying for that psychotic roommate and wait to see what God will do.:)
  17. We have 3dc, dd9 the artist, advanced in reading (9th grade level), ds7 has a head for math and Lego structures, and dd5 gifted in physical coordination and a deep thinker - writes really well but cannot read well yet. (opposite of other two) We've always homeschooled. I spend most of the time on the general board as the subjects are so interesting or amusing.
  18. Looks good except I don't know if you need Writing Strands 2. I would add some Art. Music? Don't remember if I saw it on your list.
  19. I had a psychotic, suicidal roommate one year in college and another year I had the super studious straight-laced uptight roommate. It is good to have some of these experiences in order for your dd to mature and figure out how to relate to people who are not like her, not that it is a fun thing. I would definitely counsel her to sit down with the roomie and come up with some room rules that both can agree to. Like keep your stuff on your side and I won't touch it kind of thing. Then I would encourage your daughter to find a new roommate for next year. The boyfriend issue is another problem. This is all too common on many campuses. Maybe the roomie could go to the boyfriends room if they insist on sleeping together. If your dd college has any kind of lifestyle statement that students agree to abide by then your dd has reason to go to school officials (above the RA) and complain. Again, another opportunity to learn how to respond to other's questionable choices.
  20. My husband is awesome, couldn't do this without his support.
  21. I hate the title because it sounds arrogant but I did appreciate a lot of the information in it. I would not agree with some of the extreme views in the book but again there are many well written arguments for homeshooling in the book. Homeschooling: the Right Choice by Chris Klicka Another good one is Educating the Whole Hearted Child by Sally Clarkson
  22. Beowulf and Don Quixote are two favorites. Anything Shakespeare or Mark Twain.
  23. It was forty below wind chill overnight. There is nothing but white as far as the eye can see. As soon as we thaw out we will will walk, we will look, we will never come back inside!!:D
  24. The Read With Me Bible actually helped our son learn to read. He had been through most of 100EZ lessons but when we gave him that Bible he just loved reading it to us.
