I need a new method for storing our school books that we use daily! I have tried the 'traditional' workboxes route (with the shoe boxes) but hated how it bent our books. I've done a similar workboxes type layout with a smaller (only 5 drawers) cart, but it didn't work so great either. I would love to get one of those lovely 10 drawer carts from Joann's or somewhere, but I worry it will be just ANOTHER 'tried it but it didn't work' kinda deals and I waste my money. I thought about just getting sturdy book ends and having them all right on his desk, but worry they will still all be falling over on themselves :/ What do you use?! If you have pics, PLEASE share! I am much more visual than I care to admit, LOL! TIA!!

Homeschool planner (What do you use)
nov05mama replied to bttrflyvld's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I love HST+...I love the lifetime upgrades, etc. I love the look of the Well Planned Day software too, but it's REALLY pricey and way to far in the beta stage right now to even consider it. The price is still a really big deterrent even without the kinks... -
Getting the itch to start the school year!
nov05mama replied to Mommie_Jen's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Same here!! Only about 2 weeks or so left to go though!! We are planning to start on July 2nd! I thought about taking the first week in July off and not starting til July 9th, but we don't usually do much for the 4th anyway, so we will go ahead and just start at the beginning of July :D I can't wait! -

How nice is your rising 2nd grader's handwriting?
nov05mama replied to Mommy22alyns's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I haven't really addressed it much b/c I am just happy he's writing :tongue_smilie: This coming year, we will address it and hopefully correct it. I spent this year just being happy he was writing willingly that I am just hoping I didn't go and totally mess things up by not correcting sooner. :tongue_smilie: Overall, though, it doesn't bother me *that* much...it's legible, and that's what's most important right now. :D -
How nice is your rising 2nd grader's handwriting?
nov05mama replied to Mommy22alyns's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Depends on the day :tongue_smilie: Here is one from today when he rushed it (the Egyptians) and another day when he didn't (the Ojibway). Both were copywork exercises. -

Right brained math free on currclick

THANKS! :D -
Yeah, finding apps for older kids is kinda hard...Doodle Physics is pretty fun, but you probably have to get the paid version for it to be worthwhile...we have the free version and I think DS already beat all the levels... GeoQuiz, WordTrain & WordDrop are the only other ones that I could see possibly appealing to slightly older kids.

How do you teach days of the week, months, etc.?
nov05mama replied to sierramv1's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
:iagree: DS actually taught himself...He would ask me about the months/days of the week and I would always answer his questions. He eventually wanted his own calendar to count down to different dates (his birthday, a big trip, etc) and pretty much just learned them that way. No formal lessons though! -
Any cons about Growing with Grammar, their Spelling and WWW
nov05mama replied to Emagine's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We like Growing w/ Grammar and Winning w/ Writing a lot. My son loves the simple, quick lessons and for HIM, the material really seems to stick (I know many have mentioned that wasn't the case for their child though). Soaring w/ Spelling is just OK in my book. We like it, but don't LOVE it. We will continue with it (all of them actually) through this coming year and I will see how we still feel about them 2 years into them. For the price, I think they are wonderful. -

LOTS of great FREE children's Kindle books posted all throughout the day over at Pixel of Ink - Young Edition (there is a regular one as well for adult books)...I follow their facebook page since I catch them more easily that way... http://www.facebook.com/PixelofInkYoungEdition

My DS aced the 3A placement test, and did fairly well on the 3B one too (aside from a couple concepts he had NO idea about). He knows how to multiply and divide, but he doesn't have his facts memorized at all. He has no interest in memorizing yet, and frankly I haven't pushed it. We are just taking BA slow and steady. We started it when it first released, and he's just now about half way through the perimeter/area chapters at the end of 3A. We will hold off and start 3B in July when we start the new year.

Free Mother's Day Gift from HSBC--what did you choose?
nov05mama replied to besroma's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Go to your account on HSBC. Click on the My Subscriptions tab and it should have the download link right there! HTH! -
My DS is 6 and he loves it! He is an advanced reader, but I still read the guide with him, so I wouldn't even really say a child being a non-reader would be an issue, even for the practice book. As far as math concepts, I think the only 'assumed' concepts are addition and subtraction. Exposure to multiplication and skip-counting helps, but it's certainly not necessary.
