  1. We started Singapore by that point b/c my son was very similar! He was ready for more and while I wasn't quite ready for him to be starting a regular curriculum, I am very glad that I did. He's now in Singapore 3A and Beast Academy 3C - and he'll be 7 next week! ;) I just went at his pace (and continue to do so) and it's worked out perfectly for him!
  2. :iagree: This exactly! I worried that we weren't getting enough science in and the Daily Science has been a HUGE help in that regard. I think b/c they are such short little lessons, DS really doesn't mind that it's "just" worksheets. We follow up with a BrainPop video or Discovery Education video whenever possible, but I am very happy with the choice to add Daily Science in!
  3. DS said 43 - "well, it's 40 for the 400 and then 3 more for the 30, so 43, but then there's 6 left over..." I do agree that the teacher most likely just has a set formula of how she's grading and isn't even thinking about the questions themselves...just looking for the correct answer based on that chart.
  4. No idea what the 'level' itself is, but he's been reading almost any chapter books. His most recent choices at the library have been books from Time Warp Trio series, Dragonbreath series, Otto Undercover series and he also started Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone last month. He'll be 7 at the end of November. His favorites over the course of the last year were Geronimo Stilton, Captain Underpants, and Magic Treehouse here and there.
  5. My DS will be 7 next month and just recently started book 1 on his own. He's been wanting to read it (and/or have ME read it to him) but I told him I wanted him to wait until he was ready to read it. Last month, he decided that he was ready. He's seen the movies already (except movie 7 - he would be fine with seeing it, he just hasn't), but with the books, he will progress much more slowly. At this point, he's only reading about a chapter a week, so I am hoping it will take him a while to get through each book anyway if he's reading in smaller chunks like this. I am letting him pace it himself though, so he might even decide NOT to move on to book 2 when he's finished, and that's totally fine ;)
  6. I wondered about this and emailed! My DS is technically only in FIRST grade by our state cutoff, but is doing 3rd grade level math...so it will be strange to wait until he's "public school" 3rd grade to start Mathnasium...he'd be on 5th grade level math by that point - at this rate! The person I talked to did say the same thing though, they just don't want older kids taking a below level test.
  7. ^ this exactly! Same state actually ;) NC We aren't required to report the results, just required to give the test, so for us, they have nothing to do with each other. He had his first test last year and had no issues at all.
  8. Gah! I am so bummed I am just realizing that it's THIS weekend! I would have registered DS earlier if I had realized...he would LOVE this! When does registration normally open? Are there other events or is it just once a year?
  9. :iagree: ITA! My DS is 6 and loves Beast Academy (he's almost to 3C at the moment), but if he was easily frustrated, I would likely have held off on it.
  10. I think Singapore is a good place to start. My son blossomed with Singapore and also with Math Whizz (online). I also avoided many of the manipulative-based curriculums b/c he was so good at mental math. I would also recommend getting a copy of Maximum Math by Kathryn Stout and maybe even Zaccaro Primary Math/Challenge Math for elementary. These will help give you ideas to nurture his natural ability. I get it, I really do. My son is 6 and is working in Singapore 3A and Beast Academy 3B (almost done...awaiting 3C to get here) and the past two years were really difficult b/c most of the feedback I had gotten (not from here...elsewhere) was NOT helpful at all...basically saying I should hold him back and I am crazy for letting my then 4 year old work on 1st grade level math...when HE was the one doing it, not me pushing it! It's natural to automatically be on the defensive, but I can assure you, that MANY of the ladies on here have been in and may even currently BE in the same situation. There isn't anything like Beast Academy for younger grades though, which is what I *think* some of them were trying to explain. Beast Academy is only currently available in the grade 3 level, which you don't need just yet (give it another year and I bet you will, lol) since you said he's working at a 1st grade level. Life of Fred is also very fun, and we use it as a supplement b/c we enjoy it. If the spaces in Singapore or MEP are an issue, I would just use a notebook or something til your son is able to write smaller (which will just come with age). HTH!
  11. LEGO's are the main favorite...followed by Zoobs and Erector.
  12. We used to have the same problem...until I added my precious into the picture ;) That puppy gets pencils SHARP and we have far less pencil issues now. Now if I could only get him to stop looking out the window...I spend most days channeling Jackie Chan "Your focus needs more focus"...
  13. My DS has been interested in playing Chess and I am looking for feedback on books or websites that could be helpful for him. I also want to get recommendations on your favorite chess sets (fairly inexpensive, if possible, but still 'nice' - I'd like to stick to no more than about $20 if I can!) He had his first meeting with our local homeschool Chess Club tonight and it went well, but he's definitely going to need practice! He knows how to play in general, and I know that most of the strategy type stuff will come mostly with practice (and age), but if there are any great books or websites that would help, I'd greatly appreciate your recommendations!
  14. I believe so! I think it works where you 'own' the download in your account and you should be able to add it to any of your devices linked to your account on Amazon, so once you have your iPad and link it up, I would think you can download it straight from your Amazon account :)
  15. Forgive me if this has already been posted!! I am pretty sure this deal is today only...(ETA: maybe not 1 day only! YAY!! I will try to keep checking and update if it changes, but as of a day later, it's STILL free!) AMERICA The Story of Us Book 1: The World Comes To America AMERICA The Story of Us Book 2: Creating The West AMERICA The Story of Us Book 3: A House Divided Cannot Stand
  16. My son was 3 when we started using it. He's always been a very 'mathy' kid and begged to learn as well. He's 6 now and is working in Singapore 3A and Beast Academy 3B. You could always give it a try and put it away if you find you need to...just go with her flow! That's what I did with my DS...I never pushed it, but if he asked to do it, we would, so it was nice to have something available for him :) HTH!
  17. :iagree: I do think that the guide would be OK by itself, but the practice book definitely doesn't take "all the fun" out of it by any means. Like the PP said, if your kiddo LIKES a challenge and/or likes puzzles, he will like the practice book almost as much as the guide.
  18. Android :tongue_smilie: but thank you both for your help! I will see if the app happens to be on Android as well :) Any other resources?
  19. A friend just pointed me towards the JellyCam software, which is fabulous...but I am wondering if there are any great stop motion animation tips/tricks or even LESSON PLANS out there? My DS is particularly interested in making LEGO stop motion movies, but anything would be helpful! THX!
  20. LOVE that!!! Have you (or she) just been making them up as you go? I really need to go digging in the HCS groups and get some more ideas...I was just hoping there was something already out there :tongue_smilie: I LOVE your ideas!!
