  1. Rachel, if you search Virtual Homeschool Group on the board, you'll find many discussions on the subject. I personally love Virtual Homeschool Group. However, we've never used TOG. Just the Apologia sciences and this year Saxon Adv. Math. Most of the other classes are recorded, they are called asynchronous, which lets you make up classes you've missed. You can get a hold of Mrs. Moore from 4 - 6 pm central time on T, W, and Th. It should be on the main page. Or you can email her directly at armoorefam@centurytel.net Good luck!
  2. I have and they were serious! I was stunned. Just thought it was a typo or something. :001_huh:
  3. Well, I have to check other because there is no attitude or eye-rolling, etc. allowed - BUT they are always allowed to express their thoughts in a respectful manner. So, for instance, I tell them to do something. They acknowledge and follow through. They can always say, "Yes, I will, Mom. But that upsets me because.... " and then express their thoughts . Then I say something like "Okay, your're right." Or "No, it's got to be done now, or by you, or this way, because..." etc. There's a give and take. Hubby thinks I'm too lenient and shouldn't have to explain myself. I think my children are not frustrated and we're very close. When I said "But" to my mom she would back-hand me in the mouth for sassing her. I never spoke my mind until I was in my mid-twenties after many sessions with a therapist.
  4. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Dad. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  5. We've had squirrels chew through the siding on either side of our chimney and nested (were there when we moved in). A few chewed through window screens and dug out the window sill (and insulation) to nest in just a few minutes. Others used to scratch incessantly at our screen door, and still others chewed through the lids of our trash cans and we got to pick up trash every day. That was all in NC surrounded by beautiful Carolina Pines. The only thing that helped was when we brought home our precious Golden Retriever. She was very busy the first week chasing those squirrels. After that, we didn't see many around!
  6. If that's how my daughter was treated, I would cut my losses and take her to another dance studio.
  7. It was DH who dragged me kicking and screaming. I was sure I would ruin them or we'd end up hating each other. Of course, the exact opposite is true. We're very close. :D
  8. It's a small world! My dd got it from Tammy Moore. :D
  9. No, I don't. :tongue_smilie: I purchase the student book and answer key and then the test book. But you don't have to purchase the test book. I used to make my own tests on http://easytestmaker.com/. But then I got lazy.
  10. This is what I did for youngest and it worked! :001_smile:
  11. Wordly Wise has done wonders for my kids. I had to go back and redo phonics and vocabulary with my oldest after pulling her out of private school in 3rd grade. Several of the women in my local support group suggested it and they were right. It has made a WORLD of difference for her over all these years. I started backward with a lower level and she was a bit miffed with me. But hey, I see that as one of the great benefits of home schooling. I can give her the advanced curriculum in subjects she excels at and remediate where needed. She got over it as she gained confidence in comprehension. This year, I wanted to drop it, but she said, "No way, Mom! Not until I finish taking SATs/ACT." I didn't think she needed it - she's a junior! :tongue_smilie: Here's the link to Rainbow Resource or maybe someone knows where to get them for less: http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1283305007-1478133&subject=8&category=1926
  12. I have just survived thyroid cancer. :001_smile: For six years I have suffered from IBS and endometriosis. Had surgery to remove the endo. It had grown and adhered to my uterus, tubes, ovaries, intestines and bladder. I was bent over in pain for years. Did school from my bed. After the surgery, it was like a new me. One year later, the all too familiar pains came back. That's when the gyn said, "Oh yeah, it can grow back." :glare: Don't know if I want to go through that again. During the first surgery, I had two heart attacks.
  13. BTDT for the last 5 years. It is a good idea to get checked out by the gastro. I had 3 polyps removed, but that was not my problem. I spent many a day in the bathroom or in bed with terrible cramping. I started taking probiotics last January and it has changed my life. I know many here will smirk or scoff but I take Colon Health probiotics from Phillips. I get it in the grocery store. The bottle says to take one per day but that wasn't quite enough. I take two per day and spend most days with my kids in the real world now. It's nice feeling like a normal person again.
  14. We used to hit our projects with nails, chains, hammers, sand paper, etc. then stain and seal.
  15. :iagree: This is what we're doing also.
  16. Here are ten reasons why you should home school your teen: http://www.hslda.org/highschool/docs/TenReasonsHTHS.asp The Best Kind of Socialization: http://www.hslda.org/highschool/Best_Socialization.pdf And my ALL time favorite weapon that should shut every naysayer up::lol: http://www.hslda.org/docs/study/ray2009/2009_Ray_StudyFINAL.pdf
  17. There are some really lovely women on The Homeschool Lounge. It has a very uplifting, encouraging tone to the site. There are so many active groups to join and an online chat room. I'm in the Older Moms group, and Apologia, Classical, Curriculum swap, Recipe Exchange, Homeschooling Girls, etc. It's sort of like a Facebook, only strictly for home schoolers. http://www.thehomeschoollounge.com/ Some people don't care for the fact that they have to join to be able to cruise the site. But the mods are really careful about who joins and it's free. I like how protective they are for their members. It is exclusively for home schooling moms and grandmothers.
  18. Hamlet, Henry V, Othello, and MacBeth. The only comedy I seem to like these days is Much Ado About Nothing.
  19. If you've already got your SAT/ACT books from the library that's about as inexpensive as it gets. However, if you want something more you can get Chalkdust SAT/ACT Review. Retails for $155.00 - I found one used for $70. Also, the IEW High School Essay Intensive retails for $79.00. I have yet to find this one used yet. Our dd took an ACT preparedness class and the instructor showed it. Dd was so excited because it helped to finally get her essay done in under 25 and she thought it was probably the best essay she'd written to date. Used ABeka or BJU history and lit books can usually be found pretty inexpensively. You can do both US, World, or Ancient at the same time. I think I paid $9 for the student Eng Lit book and $20 for the TG. Here's a list of places I buy from used: http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com http://www.vegsource.com/homeschool/fs712/index.html http://www.amazon.com http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ABEKAFORSALE/?yguid=224390874 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClassicalSwap/?yguid=224390874 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Homeschool_Fleamail/?yguid=224390874 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TeachingTextbooks/?yguid=224390874 I am so impressed with your initiative! Best of luck to you!
  20. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I am praying for complete healing for your brother Mike. I have just come through cancer and know the power of G-d first hand this month, and my BIL also!
