International JOB opportunities!!

Heather in Neverland

I know lots of people are out of work and if you are looking for a job in an international environment NOW is the time to apply.

My school has grown SO MUCH in the last few years. So we are expanding our classes and hiring more staff. Our current openings:

Full Time Positions:

1st Grade Teacher

2nd Grade Teacher

5th Grade Teacher

6th Grade Teacher

K-8 Art Teacher

ESL Teacher / Coordinator

Special Services Teacher

Technology / Computer Teacher

HS English Teacher

HS Guidance Counselor

HS Science Teacher

You need to be a certified teacher for any teaching position OR have the appropriate college degree. Homeschooling is legal in Malaysia but you are more likely to be hired if both you and your dh are coming to work here (it costs the school a ton of money to fly families here, ship all their stuff, etc. so we prefer to get two employees out of the deal when possible). The school website is www.dalat.org

These are salaried positions with full medical and dental benefits and free tuition for your children and includes furnished housing and paid trips back home.

If Malaysia is not your cup of tea then check out these links for other options for job searches in international schools:

The biggest job search engine is TIE...you will have to subscribe which requires a fee of $39 but it is the biggest: http://www.tieonline.com/

Another great one is Search Associates www.searchassociates.com

If you are interested in working in a christian school you can look here (it is free): http://missionteach.com/

Here is a list of international schools on the U.S. government website. You can search by continent and get direct links to the schools themselves: http://www.state.gov/m/a/os/c1684.htm

You can also look into Department of Defense schools here:

www.dodea.edu

If you have questions, let me know (even about other schools).

Happy job hunting!!!

ARGH!!!! I am qualified for 3 of those positions. I would love to apply, but, well, I have a family who won't be as excited about it for various reasons.

ME TOO! And, I would love it! But, there's no way I could get dh on board with this. Moving him 1000 miles south 7 years ago was traumatic for him!

Wishing you the best as you hire, Heather!

Hey, Heather, are the classes in your schools taught in English? (Forgive me if this has been answered, I'm working and had to reply quickly). If so, and if you have any hearing impaired students, I'd love to talk with you about speech-to-text transcription options for them. It's like sign language, but in real-time text that they read on a computer screen instead. (Most hearing impaired students don't know sign language because they're not deaf, and it's better than "note taking" which doesn't allow them to fully participate in class). Just wondering out loud! I don't know the time difference between there and the west coast, but if this service would be useful to your school, I'd love to chat with you about it.

Our campus is English only (except for the foreign language classes like Spanish, Mandarin, etc.). At the moment we do not having any hearing impaired students. We typically are not able to accept them because there are not any services available for them (it's difficult to get hearing impaired services on this island). This is a great resource and I will let our special services department know about it. Thanks!!!

Hey Heather, since you seem to post something similar each year, I'm wondering about showing this to my dd who has a passion for travel. She's still in high school so it would be a few years yet. But what about travel in country while under contract?

The only experience we have with someone close to us doing this was a family who went to Kenya as dorm parents. Then the kids attended the school as part of their compensation but in addition to being dorm parents, dad also taught a class and coached a team and mom was a guidance counselor. They were not/are not homeschoolers. But on school breaks they still had plenty of time to travel.

If she graduated college and came to work for you, would there be things beyond the classroom she'd have as responsibilities? Would she be able to travel weekends or would it have to be school breaks? I'm just trying to look at it as going with eyes wide open. She may only be interested in it being a foreign country. She may not be interested at all.

People on my staff travel constantly! This is such a great jumping off point for many places in SEAsia. If she is interested in a few years, she can actually do her student teaching semester here to get a taste of this life before committing to a contract. We typically host one student teacher per year. Two of them have been hired on in the last 4 years!

Australia is one of my "must-visit" places. Now that dd is getting a little more independent, I can see a trip there in our near future. You must be so excited to move there!

We are SO excited! It's always been a dream of mine to live in Australia but I never thought it could happen. I won't truly believe it until we are there. :)

You're welcome, Heather. If I can't provide the service personally (because of timing, schedule, etc.), I can put you in touch with a company who has several transcribers available to them. I, or they, could easily provide the service as long as Skype is available in the classroom and there's an external wireless microphone to set on a desk near the instructor. The student also needs something to read the transcript on over the internet -- laptop, iPad, etc. If you ever get to the point of wanting a demonstration, just PM me and I'll do one with you (no cost, just so you can see how it works). That could happen anytime. Best to you!

I have a question. Your post says a teaching certificate OR a degree. Does that mean that having a BA in English would qualify me to teach English and/or writing without having a teaching certificate?

Yes, especially if you have any teaching experience. In order to get a work visa in Malaysia you must have a bachelors degree or be certified in the area you want to work.

Bummer. My husband's degrees are in physics and computer science (and I think he has one in resp therapy too, but I digress, lol). No teaching cert or teaching experience though (although he's always been interested in it.

And I have no degrees.

*sigh*

Ooooooh that would be SO FUN. I went to Singapore American School for 3rd-9th grade and LOVED IT! We adored our time in SE Asia and I am still in touch with many of my friends from that time. I've always thought if I were a classroom teacher, I'd want to be at an American or International school in SE Asia... so much adventure! (not to mention tons of resources and other benefits, too!)

My sis and her husband moved to Korea last summer to teach in an international school there -- they're having the time of their lives! Spent the Christmas break in Thailand and the pictures she posted on FB were amazing. Very excited for them. Sounds wonderful here, too.

I hate to sound like I am bragging but..... :)

It really has been the most amazing thing to ever happen to our family. We have had so many incredible experiences and been to so many spectacular places and ate the most delicious food and met so many different people from all over the world...

We are forever changed.

Bill and I applied for positions at Dalat a couple of years ago, and I do have to say that our experience was stellar. Heather, of course, was phenomenal. Although it didn't work out the way that I wanted it to, God used the application process, the interviews, and especially our conversations, to prepare us for what we're doing now. I know we're in the right place, but I do feel my heart tug when you post about these opportunities, Heather!

I'll share this with my teacher friends... dumb question, but is the cost of living cheaper on the Ringgit compared to the US dollar? And are you happy with healthcare?

The healthcare here is awesome! Super affordable and top notch. Also, the health insurance through my school is really great. You can get in to see a doctor or specialist just about any day you want without an appointment. For instance, I had been having a lot of trouble with my foot... Plantar fasciitis. I called the specialist and they got me in that same day. I waited about 20 minutes, then I saw the doctor. He sent my downstairs for an X-ray of my foot right then, recommended an out patient procedure called "platelet rich plasma therapy" and scheduled it for the very next day! So in 24 hours, I saw a specialist, had X-rays, blood work, and an out patient surgical procedure and was at home recovering.

Cost of living overall is cheaper. Some things are more expensive, others are less. For example, with dh and I working full time, we make about $50k USD (all together). In the US, before we moved, we were making about $100k USD. But here, $50k gets us a 4 bedroom, 3 bath house of about 2400 sq. feet, fully furnished, as well as a full-time, live-in maid/nanny. It is also plenty to cover electricity, water, internet and cable TV (electricity being the most expensive), groceries, piano lessons, eating out, gasoline, country club membership, etc., and still have money left over to travel. We aren't rolling in it but we are doing well.

We are moving to Australia sometime towards the end of this year or early next year and I know Australia is in need of teachers too. :D

I don't think the hundreds of out of work teachers here would agree with you. Specialist teachers-maybe - but not your average bachelor degree teacher for sure.

I just read Home is a Roof Over a Pig about an American family who took teaching jobs in China at the university level. Her experiences awoke the wanderlust in me.

I've just requested my library's copy of the book. Thanks for recommending it.

Kareni

I second that... Added it to my amazon cart!

Hope you both like it as much as I did. The author was a homeschooling mom using a literature based curriculum for read alouds and a bit of afterschooling. (The kids all attended the local Chinese school during the day.) I wondered as I read the book if she was perhaps on one of the homeschooling forums.

Heather, we are very interested in this sort of opportunity ( not Malaysia, though!) but as I am looking at your links it seems that most schools want a certified teacher, which I am not. I am in my third year of teaching Spanish and can also teach German. What are the best places for me to look? I have a BA and MA in German with a minor in Spanish and some grad credits in Spanish.

With your degrees as well as having classroom experience, I think many places that ask for certification would still be interested in you! We would definitely interview if we had an opening. Certification is great, but give me real life experience any day of the week!
