mom31257
Do any of you have good ideas on volunteering with your children? I would really like for us to spend a few days each month volunteering next school year. I will have a 1st grade son and 7th grade daughter. Would anyone have some good suggestions for me? vettechmomof2
Nursing home and putting craftes together with residents. Singing with residents. Placing plants and weeding at a local home works well also. Animal shelters and socializing with critters. Those are some of our regular activities. Also working at a local food bank. Have fun. snickelfritz
My SIL is signing up to do this with her son. They will be doing something with delivering to nursing homes???

Chelle in MO
We work at a food bank distribution warehouse occasionally and have also delivered library books to a homebound woman. Chelle
Sebastian (a lady)
I'm working toward getting our library to use us as volunteers. One of our old libraries used to have volunteers who adopted shelves to keep tidy. Our children's section could certainly use this help. Momofeat
Another vote for nursing homes here. :) I know some families play instruments or sing for the residents, but we're taking a more intimate approach. We have "adopted" a few residents, and we often take them little treats or leave them with pictures the dc drew. The activities director tries to match us with residents who do not have family nearby, and who enjoy children. It's been a really good experience for all of us. Stacia
My SIL is signing up to do this with her son. They will be doing something with delivering to nursing homes??? My grandmother was a recipient of meals on wheels for awhile. There were a couple of people who brought food that also brought their children along. My grandmother loved getting to see & chat w/ the kids a little bit. It really brightened her day & she mentioned it often.
Peek a Boo
another vote for Meals on Wheels. I'll attach a pic :) we also volunteered at a thrift store for awhile helping to organize their stuff. one that hasn't been mentioned: going door-to-door about local issues. Handing out voter registration cards and/or info about local elections. Kids like ringing doorbells :D Edited April 13, 2009 by Peek a Boo
Rosie_0801
If you have refugees in your area, you could volunteer with English teaching. Those with pre-school kids often don't get to attend the English classes. Rosie
