If you're imagining a business you might want to buy a domain name and server space, and take the time to customize a wordpress template (free or paid) on your own server. That way you can post affiliate links and ads and learn money. I still don’t think it’s as good as a long explanation, though... I’ve scrolled around on Instagram and have found it pretty pedagogically useless. I mainly use it so that I can keep up with my college kids without using facebook. 😉 I think the problem might be that most people don't want to read long explanations. But you want to sign up with some type of hosting company like Bluehost because they can do things like keep your site secure and block your personal information ( when you make a blog your personal information as far as who you are and where you live, etc. is public information unless you do something like this) You probably will not go this far, but if you want to send newsletters, then you need to sign up for a mail service like mailchimp or mailerlite. Free versions are ok. However, you HAVE to have an address. Some people can use a church or business if the places they are affiliated are ok with it. Many sign up for a post office box at 95 bucks a year. Otherwise, you have to put your home address on it. But yes, they technically could run ads, even ones you don't necessarily agree with. If that would bother you, it would still be cheaper for you to pay for their personal plan (no ads and custom domain name), than self-hosting. I use wordpress (.org) and it's fine and you can customize more, but there are costs involved, and it can be a pain if you need to do anything technical and don't really know how (that's me). Ds19 has dyscalculia and math has always been a nightmare for him. This is definitely something I would’ve been interested in when he was younger.
