J-rap
I love mysteries (especially BBC) and political intrigue type series (either serious or with some comedy) but have had a really hard time finding ones anymore that aren't very dark. Or if they exist, I've probably already watched them! Most recent ones I've watched and enjoyed that don't have too much dark in them are Occupied (Norwegian with subtitles), and Fallet (a mix of English and Swedish with subtitles). Both on Netflix. (I'd probably rate them PG13 from what I remember, possible a close R in a few scenes.) ETA: I wouldn't call either of them gems though. Amethyst
I agree with those who suggested Schtisel. We loved it. I watched Unorthodox and it was ok but not as great as Schtisel. DH and I are currently re-watching Mad About You. I guess it’s not a hidden gem, but maybe there are people here young enough not to have watched it when it was first out. It’s on Amazon Prime. QueenCat
We've just gotten into Bosch on Amazon Prime. It's a detective series in which each season is focused on one case. Others we've enjoyed in the past year. All on either Netflix or Hulu. Netflix: Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, The Stranger, Good Girls Hulu: Big Sky, Little Fires Everywhere, Reprisal,

Lady Florida.
Netflix - The Dig, historical fiction about the Sutton Hoo excavation of the late 1930s. Hulu - Nomadland, beautiful but sad. Golden Globes winner so I don't know if it counts as a surprise hit but definitely worth the time.
teachermom2834
Cobra Kai is so good. Not hidden at all, but somehow dh and I never watched it- The New Girl. So funny. I know it was pretty popular but we are just now watching it.
theelfqueen
I just watched Unorthodox and it was Very Good. And a film called Wish I Were Here which was also surprisingly good. Probably recommended because I watched Unorthodox and it has a minor orthodox Judiasm element in the story... and homeschooling. Both on Netflix. Oh and only on Netflix til like March 13?
