SparklyUnicorn
Yet another gift question. I hate this secret Santa stuff with a passion. This is for my kid's dance class. The age range of the kids is 8-12 or something like that. The limit is $10. Would it be terrible of me to throw $10 into a card? What kid wouldn't want 10 bucks is what I'm thinking. LOL I know, it's not terribly creative, but I just don't know what else.
Dmmetler
I usually did a gift card and one of those $1 Movie theater type candy packs.
SparklyUnicorn
Gift card crossed my mind, but I don't know which gift card and I hate to then put pressure on the parent to spend money. It's hard to spend exactly $10 anywhere. And food is problematic. The parent might be upset about too much candy, or the kid has allergies, or who knows. This is why I hate this stuff. I do not know these kids AT ALL.
SKL
I don't like it either, but I let my kid figure it out. I figure the idea is for the secret Santa to try to think what she knows about the recipient and find a gift that uniquely fits that person. My kid is going to give her recipient a $5 squishy thing and some candy from the grocery store. Last year she received a plastic glittery tumbler full of hard candy. I really don't think expectations are high here. :P

Last year he didn't understand the concept and forgot to tell me. So the day of they were expecting a gift. I ran to the closest store while he was in the class. The only store nearby was a grocery store. I picked out a gingerbread house kit and some cocoa mix.
Dmmetler
What I hate is the “bring a $10 gift†which is then handed out to one of the kids in the class. No way to pick anything specific there! At cheer the most common gift is something in the team colors/symbol personalized with the kids name or initials. Sports bottles, tumblers, makeup bags, hair bows. That and fancy socks.

Catwoman
I like the cash idea. How about a $10.00 bill wrapped around a candy bar? If I was a kid, I'd rather have the cash than a random generic gift.
Night Elf
Some of these I know, other ideas I'm getting from Walmart.com. Card game sets. Skip Old Maid, that's babyish. Sometimes there are small handheld electronic games like tic tac toe, or hangman. Craft Kits. I'm looking at Walmart online and there are few things like a crafty pom pom creation kit, hair chalk kit, friendship bracelets. Sketch pad and nice drawing pencil. You'd probably need to go to a specialty store for that, but check art supplies dept. at Walmart or Target. Adult coloring book because the patterns are cool, and a pack of colored pencils. Piggy bank you decorate with paints yourself. $4.99 SlimyGloop Laboratory Kit $9.97 Decorate your own cupcake bank with paints. $6.40. Some of these are online only, but I bet you can find similar gifts.

Okra
Cash is fine, but if you want to give a gift here are some ideas. Some have been what my own children have received and liked so I'm not sure where to buy them. Adult coloring book with pencils Cupcake kit Joke book Beginner knitting kit Cute journal Huge candy bar sold during Christmas time. I would say don't overthink it. I would buy something and be done. Personally, I don't like these gift exchanges at all. We just buy something random and go for it. For your future child. In the high school crowd Starbucks gift cards are the most coveted and stolen gifts in my opinion. Just FYI to help you out when your kid is older. Beth S
I'd go with the cash. You could google how to fold it into Dollar Bill Orgami, so that it's 3-D. My perspective is that I'm not going to waste my time puzzling over this type of gift. And, to me, $10 in candy is just too much candy for a kid!
Ali in OR
My dd's dance studio is mostly girls and fun socks are a popular gift (if her draws a girl). My other dd is a soccer player and their secret buddy gifts were largely candy and sports drinks (a gift for every home game).

forty-two
We did a Rubik's cube. We got a Star Wars mug filled with hard candies. Edited December 11, 2017 by forty-two
strawberries
DD had a gift exchange with a $10 limit at her girl scout meeting tonight. I took her shopping and she picked out a bracelet weaving kit to bring. She received....a different bracelet weaving kit. Apparently a popular choice among the fourth graders.
tiddles
I really dislike the secret santa thing. My son put a lot of thought into a gift for his recipient, only to receive a used business magazine as his gift (maybe they thought it would be a hilarious gag). He didn't let on, but I could tell he was disappointed - and of course I was mad as heck!

I'm going to go with kid remembered on the way out the door, late to class, and kid's mom grabbed the nearest newish thing - a business magazine that came that day. That is my theory. My other dd is a soccer player and their secret buddy gifts were largely candy and sports drinks (a gift for every home game). The problem is his class was recently combined with another class so he doesn't know most of the kids. So I won't have a clue at all. I have no idea how girl's socks are sized (heck I still don't know how boy's socks are sized). I do think I'm just going to go with the money. It might not be creative, but what kid won't like money! He's in a hip hop class. I don't know at this point if there are other boys because since combining classes I don't know. His last class did not (last semester it did). I can't keep up!
